have i missed something or has this not been mentioned much here? it's just that it's out in the shops and a lot of you get the heads up on things way before i get a look in. is this the album where luda really amps up the persona (not that i mind), i reckon he won't stop until they make SOME type of toy of him.

Beats are like hmmmm...

but obviously i will soon buy and listen and hear more than luda's lovable surface. but someone here musta already?

What I heard sounded great and I love love love "Stand Up" (is it Timbaland producing)? Possibly my hip hop track of the year so far.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Murdock indie?

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Stand Up" is Kanye West, although Luda has said that he's mostly not using well-known producers this time.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I only thought Timbaland because the beat is the most compulsively wired I've heard since Bubba's "Twerk A Little".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

what does "compulsively wired" mean, tim?

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

tim's right, though: the album's quite good. i didn't reach for the skip button until the eighth track.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

and "pussy poppin" is the best ludacris song ever.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm thinking this cd is pretty much what i'd hoped to get from "speakerboxx"

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

the beats are whack, but luda spits like nobody else.

j from ri, Wednesday, 8 October 2003 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Thumbs up to "Hip-Hop Quotables" on first listen.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The beats are great! I liked them more on the one listen than Word of Mouf's, mostly. That first track is a MONSTER.

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"beats are whack" = beats aren't by the neptunes or timbaland?

okay nothing here grabs you quite like "Game Got Changed" EXCEPT for "Pussy Poppin". "Stand Up" is great though (echoes of "Pass the Dutch"), and so are "We Got" and "Hard Times" (c'mon, three six mafia!). "Splash Waterfalls" = Urban Shakedown or old DJ Rap at hip-hop tempo. i think the soul interpolations ("diamond in the back" and "southern fried") will grow on me with time.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

something tells me though that the era of "club bangers" is drawing to a close. like, one of the big anthems around here right now is lil' jon's "get low" - that's like at least a year old already!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not a particularly strong argument right there.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 9 October 2003 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

That's like the stupidest thing I ever heard. So, what, the human race just got bored of dancing all of a sudden?

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 9 October 2003 06:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Quite apart from that, "Get Low" is hardly the first anthem to have a long shelf-life, and it's certainly not the first Southern anthem to take ages to sweep through America's national consciousness.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 9 October 2003 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

tim, that's not an argument at all, though i stand by my intuition on the matter.

jacob, i'm sure it's not the stupidest thing you've ever heard.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 9 October 2003 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"tim, that's not an argument at all, though i stand by my intuition on the matter."

But Vahid your statement applies that the second sentence somehow explains or justifies even in some small way the first, whereas I can't see the connection. The slow catch-up time on "Get Low" could be used to explain a lot of things but I don't think it has any bearing on the good health or otherwise of the club banger.

Were there any other things that made you think this way?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 9 October 2003 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like "Teamwork"

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 10 October 2003 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Just got this, generally kind of boring. Am I wrong to love "Hip Hop Quotables" as much as I do? Not exactly progressive sounds, but to these ears it just feels RIGHT.

Dave M. (rotten03), Saturday, 11 October 2003 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(don't get me wrong, "Stand Up" is great too, but not much funny like this)
