"stacy's mom," which is netting them major mtv airplay. its just so godfucking awful, on every level. especially the bright pink colors and the "nu wave" magazine. it makes me hate the song even more that i would if i just heard it out of some indie kid's dorm or something. the boy in the video probably had his first orgasm on the set etc. but unless u are him, how can u think this is OKay?

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Worst of all time, though? That's a bit much.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

he said 'amongst'! (he's right)

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The song is terrible, too.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even think it's amongst the worst of all time either. I mean, it's rife with cliché, but there are plenty worse.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i can honestly not think of much worse... the song is the pits, the video sucks... smarmy crap

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The album is terrible too. One of the great mysteries of life is how this icky band manages to fly under the pandering-assholes radar of so many people who really ought to know better.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 8 October 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't understand how this tiny little band is generating such ire. Hell, I don't even give a damn about them, but I can't see what's so deplorable about their music/video.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

if they were 16 yr old girls you'd want to punch them in the head

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm assuming that Vic 1) doesn't watch a lot of MTV, 2) has never seen Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and 3) hadn't heard of Fountains of Wayne before seeing this video. Am I correct?

Look, call the video and single a blatant sell-out if you want, because that's what it pretty much is. But don't dis the entirety of Fountains of Wayne's catalog, because then you'll look like you don't know what you're talking about, and nobody wants that.

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

it's weird to use a 30something woman as some kind of mrs. robinson type.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

it's weird to think anyone would cast a woman older than 30something in a video whose entire purpose was to be played on mtv.

also, stacy's mom /= mrs. robinson. stacy's mom is the very hot mom of a 13-year-old, and could very well actually be 30something. mrs. robinson is the very jaded and depressed mom of a college graduate.

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 8 October 2003 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't see what's so deplorable about their music/video.

Well, I really dislike that song because it’s a retro indie-boy arrested development/unrequited love fantasy about a MILF with annoying 'clever' 'funny ha-ha' lyric and an approachable but uninteresting melody. I really do think it’s dreadful, a good argument for that ‘shouldn’t you grow out of indie at 20’ thread perhaps? ;)

But seriously, there’s something that strikes me as a bit pathetic and emotionally stunted about this sort of juvenalia. Neither lusting after a women near your age through the eyes of a boy nor approaching the teen experience with the advantages of hindsight and maturity are at all interesting to me.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the blatant Cars homages in the video (the split-flash of a car's license plate: "I [heart] Ric", plus it mimicking the Fast Times scene in which "Moving In Stereo" is played), not so much the blatant Cars homages in the song. I have a healthy appreciation for slick power pop but FoW have never really pushed any buttons for me. this song/video doesn't seem to commit any aesthetic sins that "Denise" didn't, anyways.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

ach, that should be "split-second flash" etc.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

it's weird to use a 30something woman as some kind of mrs. robinson type.

It's "supermodel" Rachel Hunter, by the way.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Did Ric Ocasek produce the record (hence all the Cars references)? Also, notice the kids in the beginning are clearly supposed to represent the Cars ala the miniature Van Halen members in "Hot for Teacher").

I really don't think it's that bad. It's a helluva lot less offensive than, say, the video for "Get Low" by Lil Jonn & the East Side Boyz.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick M: 1) I watch too much MTV, 2) I've seen FTaRH numerous times, 3) I've "heard of" FoW since sometime in the 90s and 4) I never dissed the entirety of their catalog. I'm willfully (and judging by this song, thankfully) unfamiliar with it, as most indie simply doesn't appeal to me.

I am dissing this video, though. You don't have to take any of this [lame - I'm the first to admit it] "dis" seriously, of course, if this is one of your fav bands you heart or anything. It's just that this video/song annoys me to no end; even without the video the lyrics are totally witless and annoying, the filtered vocals thru the "got it going on" part - argh! Maybe that's standard FoW songwriting? I wouldn't know.

So many hip-hop videos always get criticized for being too crass but no one could ever say that about a FoW video without seeming out of place (because they make so few?) for some reason, and while that's not my major issue with it, I do find it a smarmy in a creepy sort of way. The Ridgemont High allusion cannot forgive all. The stupid grin on the boy's face annoys me. The opening montage of the feet at the bus stop annoys me. The impromptu-yet-utterly-predictable lap-dance sequence annoys me. The pony tail on the masseuse really, really annoys me. The fact that if this was actual 6th grade life, Stacy would never be inviting the boy over to frolic around in her pool while dressed in a skimy bathing suit to show off her developmentalism annoys me. The fact that no one invited me over their pool in 6th grade to show off their developmentalism annoys me. The entire concept of this video is just...WRONG! Of course, if I was ten years younger I might think differently, but even then I would ask myself "why are these silly band members wearing those SUITS?" etc.

And it has the sleazy feeling to it, really cheap. At certain times I got the mom confused with the daughter!

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree, Alex, the way Lil Jon says "all y'all scripples" at the beginning of that video (or whatever the hell he's saying) is definitely the most offensive thing on television.

i'm pretty sure FoW haven't worked with Ocasek and that it's just a stylistic nod. which, combined with that new Strokes single, there could be some kind of Cars revival going on.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

the video is just another damn post-McG ironic jiggle video as far as I'm concerned, not particularly note worthy unless we expect more out of critically hailed popnerds than critically dissed ones like Smashmouth and Sugar Ray (who are actually PEERS of Fountains Of Wayne if we look at when their first few albums came out). I like the song a lot myself, though having the last few words of each line echoed EVERY TIME makes the band seem a little too classicist, too refined in their studio pop. This is probably why they get more respect than their peers, by making the structure SO blatant it's clear that they're playing at it, and not truly part of it. That said, the emotion behind the chorus seems totally genuine and yearning. It's funny without being MERELY a laugh. It seems like Fountains Of Wayne is tripping around the same area Randy Newman did back in the '70s (Greil Marcus talks about this in Mystery Train), where the artist is debating whether or not to let the audience (and themselves) simply mock the characters or be forced to identify with them. The video seems closer to mocking - if they had gone with an older kid, one that didn't look so prepubescent, I think it would have been a bit less distanced.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the video's pretty damn harmless, actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"Smashmouth and Sugar Ray (who are actually PEERS of Fountains Of Wayne if we look at when their first few albums came out)"

you can't be serious.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 8 October 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

From what I remember, Fountains of Wayne were never as poppy as this single suggests that they are. I wouldn't really put them in the same category as Sugar Mouth and Smash Ray.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the guys who wrote "That Thing You Do," "Radiation Vibe" and "Sink To The Bottom." Not pop. no way. They're artists.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I was never a fan, man, why the fuck would I know? It's like I'm writing something about them (hello, Chris Ott). I wasn't aware that they wrote "That Thing You Do," though. Well, they never seemed as GLOSSYas they do now.

In any event, they're barely worth this much discussion.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoops, that weak-ass attempt at further blasting Chris Ott shoulda read: "It's NOT like I'm writing...blah blah blah."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i was just thinking, if you're considering when their breakthrough record came out, they would also be peers of matchbox, hanson and spice girls, which wouldn't make a whole lot of sense. i might consider them peers of sloan.

also had they gotten an older kid (and a girl older than 13) for the video, mtv wouldn't play it, cos they know paedophilia sells.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 8 October 2003 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You all do know that Sugar Ray was originally something akin to "hardcore" when their career began (way longer ago that you would think), right?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

They were more "metal" than "hardcore", actually...given the Shrinky Dinks era. Their first album, Lemonade & Brownies is MUCH less accessible than their later stuff.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, Sugar Ray definitely has different roots. But to the marketplace, if not the bands, Sugar Ray, Smashmouth, Fountains Of Wayne, the Verve Pipe (who later were produced by one of the FOWs) were all basically late-90s new wave/post-Cars/Weezer alternapop (Matchbox 20 almost counts except they definitely were part of a rootsier Hootie/Counting Crows type scene). Fountains Of Wayne just get more respect cuz they didn't sell as well and didn't incorporate QUITE as many hip-hop elements. Part of why "Stacy's Mom" is doing better than recent songs by the other acts is they weren't as successful, therefore the novelty element of the song sticks out more. The audience isn't too busy saying "hey it's Mark McGrath" to hear the lyrics.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The song definetely reminds me of "Popular" by....who was it? Nada Serf?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I find the oh so sincere Linkin Park videos just as annoying. As for FOW, I guess supermodels are the only way to get old-school style powerpop on mtv or radio.

Steve Kiviat (Steve K), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

it's weird to use a 30something woman as some kind of mrs. robinson type.

Um, Anne Bancroft was only 35 when she filmed The Graduate.

Vic F, Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I find the oh so sincere Linkin Park videos just as annoying.

I find the Linkin Park videos positively insufferable.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

you losers! The new one is fantabulous! What you think only insufferable BRIT goths should get to make videos in cathedrals! I swear, if Outkast made a video where Big Boi plays a grand piano in a cathedral while a teenage girl action pants you'd all FLIP OUT. Hypocrites!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

One day, Anthony, I'll meet you in person. On that day, you should remember to wear flame-retardant clothing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, regarding Outkast videos, I couldn't help but noticing that Andre 3000's new one, "Hey Ya" boasts one of the most tired cliches in video history.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

...but, I'll admit, it's a great song. Unlike, say, anything Linkin Park have ever come up with.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"I wasn't aware that they wrote "That Thing You Do," though."

I'm surprised only because: doesn't pretty much every review of FoW begin by noting that Schlesinger wrote "That Thing You Do"? Because we all agree that that was the best song ever written, and it gives us notice to sit up and pay attention to a true genius.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, being that I couldn't give less of a rolling rat fuck about Fountains of Wayne, why would I ever have read a review of theirs? They couldn't be less significant to me. Secondly, "That Thing You Do" is quite a great distance from being anywhere near "the best song ever written".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, I'm pretty glad to hear that someone else agrees that the every-guy-in-the-band-is-actually-the-same-guy cliche is really tired. Paul 'n' Linda McCartney did it in the '70s!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 9 October 2003 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with you. It's not too imaginative. But Rachel Hunter is nice.

calstars (calstars), Thursday, 9 October 2003 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't seen the new LP video, so I don't know enough of what you speak to know for sure if and where there's a word missing in that sentence, but I really want to see it now just to find out what "teenage girl action pants" means.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 9 October 2003 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHAHAHAHA!!! sorry. Action paints.

what's offensive about get low? for serious!

Well, I'm not offended by it, but if one was looking to be offended by something (as it seems Vic is), the entirely prurient objectification of women that runs rampant throughout pretty much the entire clip of "Get Low" is hard to deny, to say nothing of the lyrics...

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 9 October 2003 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Makes "Stacey's Mom" sound kinda quaint, don't it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 9 October 2003 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus, the song sounds exactly like Rick Springfield.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 9 October 2003 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard way too many women sing along with those lyrics to really think of "Get Low" as offensive to women, whether or not that's totally backwards.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 9 October 2003 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The Stacy's Mom video is very "Hot for Teacher," if you ask me. Miniature versions of band members, kids lusting after older women who do stripteases for them and whatnot.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Thursday, 9 October 2003 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I brought my PENCIL!

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 9 October 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

But "Hot for Teacher" is about a million times better.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ain't that the truth!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

All hataz (reprasent!) OTM. I dunno how this alb. has gotten so many rave reviews, although it more than likely might have to do with the opinions expressed above. However, Leave The Biker as covered by a friend's bf on acoustic guitar is probably one of the best cover renditions I've EVER heard. Arrestingly beautiful, plain and simple.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Thursday, 9 October 2003 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)
