...really amazing,
even better than Xgau
says in today's Voice:

his delivery,
his stoned hipster j-boy vibe,
all them dope-ass beats...

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It's pretty good -- got to hear it last week. Dunno, though, something about the actual sound of the record felt a bit...*searches for the word*...let me rephrase: it came out on Quannum and that doesn't surprise me at all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Murdock indie?

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Well yeah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the album is Boring. i already gave away my copy.

j b, Wednesday, 8 October 2003 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

ned you realize
of course that he's a founder
of quannum, dontcha?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't wait to hear this, I had no idea it was out now. I just heard an mp3 last night of him playing with Galactic in N'awlins and now I realize just how awesome Galactic could be if they would just get rid of fucking "Houseman" and replace him with an MC...much less how fucking majestic they would sound with an MC like Lyrics Born.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I know he's a founder of Quannum! But it's the kind of in-house sound that tends to dull by familiarity.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I can see what you're saying Ned, as though for lack-of-alien-input it maybe has a subtle stagnation that he might have avoided had there have been outside influence involved...is that kinda close?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he avoids
the whole 'sameness' thing quite well.
then again, I would

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

No I agree with you Haiku on LB's ability to avoid sameness...this is one of the things that turns me on so much about him & his MCing abilities, is his versatility and creativity and chameleonic shape-shiftery. But I too have noticed a sorta familiarity in Quannum releases, as though they're not trying as hard as they could or something, like they've settled down into their thang.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's a style
like Bad Boy or Dirty South,
and I like that style

surely ILX
isn't saying that "newness"
is required now?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw him open up for Galactic and it was decent. Not amazing, but his DJ and backup singer were hot and he did a good job considering the absolutely non-existent crowd. I only really remember the single, and I got a little sick of it since he did it twice that night (once with Galactic).

This kinda reminds me of Last Emperor's album, which I was really excited about awhile ago and then it finally comes out and I hear nothing at all about it and end up saying 'meh'.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

no Jordan it's great;
and just $10.99 at
the Exclusive Co.!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually Haik, Quannum's style is one of my favorites, and yeah it is totally a pretty definite style. Y'know, the Maroons CD comes out soon too (Maroons = Chief Xcel and Lateef the Truth Speaker).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes! Can't wait to hear it. Although I'm a bit apprehensive because we got a two track radio EP in almost a year ago and I only played them once. The R&B chorus was absolutely awful and overpowered the entire cut. I have tried to block that EP from my memory, which was really easy until this thread.

and yeah, wtf ever happened to Last Emperor?

Dale the Titled (cprek), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked every last single I downloaded from Last Emp (and there were a whole lot of them), forgot about him for months, and then the other day I randomly read that his record Music, Magic, & Myth (fucking AWFUL title) came out in August and that almost none of his earlier tracks are on it. No buzz, no reviews, store didn't have it.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
album of the year.

album, Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

(btw, I bought that Last Emperor record on impulse and I don't feel it at all. Actually it kind of makes me depressed).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

album of the year.
-- album (ofth...), October 23rd, 2003.

egotistical!
posting your name and e-mail--
stick to the damn thread!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(but I bought the Killer Mike album at the same time and it's delicious)

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Still like this, though it benefits from a couple of skit-skips in the middle. (Please, do we need to hear about how broke you are, Lyrics? C'mon!) The vibe of it grows on ya, but I do see how it can slip by without much notice outside of "Callin' Out" at first. I think partly it suffers because the Quannum *MC's* are all amazing, and come with a range of styles. (even within each rhymer- eg Gab's speed raps switched up with soul growl switch up with spoken style, Lyric's ridiculous command of every form of emphasis there is) that when you hear any two *beats* from Quannum that sound similar, it seems like a bit of a letdown. Even if the beats are good, which they usually are.

Less Joyo Velarde, please.

I would LOVE to see Lyrics bust out after this though. Get Ludacris on a track! Go guest with Lil' Jon! Go crazy, son.

Maroons track "Lester Hayes" on a mixtape done by D-Sharp is on fire. Dirty-ass guitar and plenty of space for the lines.

Part of what I mean there is that it is both a strength and weakness of Quannum that it's so insular. You get a set of MC-producers duelling each other consistently. It's like playing the same partner in chess- you might get amazingly good against each other, but you'll develop some weird ass moves that just plain don't work against someone else.
