I haven't seen it or heard it - my wife said she heard a cover version of Pictures of You in an advertisement - wondered who it was... ..Anyone? (And is it a good version? She liked it...)

Blimey, how come the Cure are suddenly all over the place? There was that car ad with Inbetween Days and I read that Q magazine even doled out some kind of lifetime achievement award to Robert Smith last week.

Is there a behind-the-scenes deal that their time in the wilderness is over or something?

Yeah, I saw it/heard it last night. It certainly sounds like a cover. Depressing.

I think it's the orginal, just chopped up to fit 30 seconds or whatever.

It feels slowed down.

not played slowly, but actually, like somebody's pressing their thumb on the turntable

Is it taken from the "Mixed Up" version? That's the one I'm most familiar with.

Damn. Sounds like butchery of one of my favourite Cure songs. A bit of an odd choice for a commercial - sure, the 'pictures' theme fits nicely with Kodak, but it's not exactly the most positive/uplifting song...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

It's an HP ad and it's definitely not a cover. As compared with most commercials out there, I think this one is fairly benign.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahem...

"They've all become prostitutes. It's apparently generally accepted that artists lend their music for commercials. Sting does it, Celine Dion, Moby, even Bob Dylan... Fuck! That's still not done in my eyes. I don't want cure fans to think of toothpaste when they hear the walk." - Robert Smith (Humo magazine July 25th, 2003)

HP Sauce?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

If only....

I think it's Hewlett Packard.

That would really blow my mind, a Cure song used to sell steak sauce. I would dye my hair and wardrobe black and bleat like a sheep.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow! That quote's pretty damning. Wonder how he'll choose to spin it? I'm still depressed over Devo giving "Whip It" to The Swiffer ad campaign.
