That said, define "failed".

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 9 October 2003 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

John Robb
Blokey from the Regular Fries, oh, no hang on, other way round

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 9 October 2003 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha - have you seen John Robb on that terrible Terry Christian programme? I can't work out if he is the most embarrassed person I've ever seen on television or just the dumbest - the answer no doubt lies somewhere in between.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 9 October 2003 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Jim Irvin

Damian (Damian), Thursday, 9 October 2003 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

John Robb - he always finishes a sentence with a question though doesn't he? Usually a sentence that says something trite and not particularly rebellious as well aren't they?

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Thursday, 9 October 2003 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not just imagining that McGinty become a novelist after the Woodentops am I?

I think it was Alice Thompson, who played keyboards in the band, who became the novelist.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 9 October 2003 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Usually a sentence that says something trite and not particularly rebellious...

I think most of us do that most of the time!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 9 October 2003 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Mitch Albom

But then I consider him a writer in the loosest sense of the word.

Nicolars (Nicole), Thursday, 9 October 2003 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like to hate, but John Robb really is a twot. He has a book called 'The '90s: What the Fuck Was All That About' ferchrissake, which sounds very much like 'I Wuw The 90s' in book form ie the duddest thing ever. He ends each sentence with a q-mark and a nervous titter because he can hardly believe he's got away with talking such balls. Going back to that book title tough, words fail me. Makes 'When Surface Was Depth' sound as clever as it thinks it is.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 9 October 2003 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Jim Irvin! Bloody hell, what a brilliant mind indeed.

Bruce Dickinson is exempt from this, I presume?

How about David Keenan? But yeah, define "failure".

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 9 October 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Was Joe Carducci ever in a punk band before he was a writer?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 9 October 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

boris vian.
although his records seem to go for loads on e-bay, he was definitely more successful as a writer.

joni, Thursday, 9 October 2003 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Wyndham Earl, Saturday, 11 October 2003 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned at Martin's place (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 12 October 2003 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Bob Stanley (I haven't heard a record by him in years, but I read his pieces in Frieze).

Momus, you should hear Finisterre, Saint Etienne's last one - it's a cracking return to form, not that it sounds much like anything else they've done.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 12 October 2003 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Hang on though does Bob Stanley count? He were a writer before he were a muso, so he's just gone back to that hasn't he?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 13 October 2003 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Gone back? Is Bob Stanley writing?

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 13 October 2003 07:21 (twenty-one years ago)
