Anyway, I'd just tell them in a polite way I am not religious, and they will usually leave. They are mainly there to turn already religious people into another religion.

and no. they dont rock. they suck.
I liked their gimmick tho. White shirts, bikes, backpacks. I'd rather they had played like the book of mormon on tape with some strange artsy fartsy crap played in the background, however.
but thats just me.

• the lead singer of the Aquabats is mormon, and i believe the guitarist is too, and also the keyboard player and some of the horn players at one time were too... although they seem to go thru a lot of member changes so i can't really confirm.• randy bachman, of the guess who and bachman turner overdrive ("takin' care of business" etc) fame. supposedly the guess who split up because bachman converted and wasn't down for the hard-partyin' lifestyle of his bandmates.• his son, tal bachman. well, he doesn't really rock per se, as he plays an 80s style of vh1 friendly adult contempo pop.• mick ronson, david bowie's guitarist (who died of cancer in 1993).• sky saxon, singer of The Seeds ("Pushin' Too Hard"), was born into a mormon family but i know he wasn't down and gave it up in his early teens, if not before that.• the original bassist of Jimmy Eat World, mitch porter, is mormon but left the band to go on a 2 year mission before they even recorded "static prevails".
oh yeah...• ed "big daddy" roth, inventor of rat fink. ok, that's stretching it, he doesn't ROCK at all. but he's an awesome artist and made a huge contribution to a truly american artform of custom cars, artwork and hot-rods.• josh "shag" agle, popular lounge/retro illustrator is a lapsed mormon.

I grew up in the Bible belt, so I grew up around Christianity as a dominant force. I was raised in ultra-liberal private schools though, and my family is pretty much as non-religious, religiously apathetic as you can get. In his old age and dementia, my grandfather would find flyers for the weekly prayer groups, or whatever, and then rail against how there is a Christian conspiracy in the retirement home out to get him. So, growing up, Christianity has always seemed bizzare to me. Something I could never understand really being a part of.
That said, around seventh grade when my family started running out of money and I was transferred to public schools, I became friends with a group of Mormons. They seemed no weirder or different than any of the other Christians I've seen growing up. I really couldn't tell the difference between them and any other more mainstream Christian faith. They seemed no different; all equally strange.
It wasn't until high school that I realized what most of the country thought about Mormons. It's strange hearing people talk about Mormonism as if it's some sort of foreign African pagan religion on the National Geographic channel. From my vantage point, it really makes no sense. Are the differences that great? I certainly don't see them.

someone not mentioned yet as being Mormon at one point is the legendary Mick Ronson (Bowie's guitarist)...
I myself am mormon, although i still really struggle with some issues. the basic tenets are good though: be compassionate and positive and content with what you have.
but yeah, Mick Ronson and 'Harold and Maude' (all apologies about Napoleon Dynamite)
