Mormons - where do you stand?

I ask this because I had them at the door once and wasn't very nice to them.

ensemble ed, Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this supposed to be in "I Love Everything"?

Anyway, I'd just tell them in a polite way I am not religious, and they will usually leave. They are mainly there to turn already religious people into another religion.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Mormons answer to the thread question = "On your doorstep!"

Thanks, don't forget to tip your waitress.

adaml (adaml), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

But if they get pushy is it okay to sock them on the nose?

Ensemble Ed, Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Low are magic, though. I wonder if they have ever had to do the door to door thing? i can't see it myself.

jed (jed_e_3), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Do Mormons "rock"?

Ensemble Ed (Ensemble Ed), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

landing are also mormons and their music is great! so, I think, are the danielson familie. I don't know what to make of all that.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

On second thought I think I will play them XTC's "Dear God". Or maybe Depeche Mode's "Blasphemous Rumours". :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the mormons play the derby in LA a couple months ago with deerhoof.

and no. they dont rock. they suck.

I liked their gimmick tho. White shirts, bikes, backpacks. I'd rather they had played like the book of mormon on tape with some strange artsy fartsy crap played in the background, however.

but thats just me.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Can mormons practice kung fu and bestiality or is that against their beliefs?

Ensemble Ed (Ensemble Ed), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

this came up in google:

http://www.burgoyne.com/pages/elsie/

astroblaster (astroblaster), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

danielson familie i'm relatively positive are not mormons. kung fu seems to be ok within the belief system. bestiality is not. kung fu and bestiality seems really tricky regardless of the belief system.

fffv (fffv), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

mormons can DEFINITELY Rock -

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

On second thought I think I will play them XTC's "Dear God".

On third thought, follow that with "Personal Jesus".

Low aren't Mormons!

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 9 October 2003 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i had a really close friend in high school that was mormon and one time when he stayed over he left his book of mormon in my room. i called him and told him about it and he told me to keep it and check it out if i wanted.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 9 October 2003 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Low aren't Mormons!

Are you on crack? (Sorry, but I'm speaking assuming you're a massive fan like I am.) Al and Mimi have been very open about their faith, and unless they've recently gone through some spiritual change or something...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 October 2003 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

San Francisco frequently has visible numbers of Mormon young men out on their missionary time or whatever. They always look well-scrubbed and clean cut in their grey suits. I spoke to one fellow a couple months ago. I saw him approach me and thought "oh boy, I don't want to talk to this guy", but I just decided to hear his spiel, and actually he couldn't have been nicer.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 9 October 2003 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 9 October 2003 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

notable mormons who rock:

• the lead singer of the Aquabats is mormon, and i believe the guitarist is too, and also the keyboard player and some of the horn players at one time were too... although they seem to go thru a lot of member changes so i can't really confirm.
• randy bachman, of the guess who and bachman turner overdrive ("takin' care of business" etc) fame. supposedly the guess who split up because bachman converted and wasn't down for the hard-partyin' lifestyle of his bandmates.
• his son, tal bachman. well, he doesn't really rock per se, as he plays an 80s style of vh1 friendly adult contempo pop.
• mick ronson, david bowie's guitarist (who died of cancer in 1993).
• sky saxon, singer of The Seeds ("Pushin' Too Hard"), was born into a mormon family but i know he wasn't down and gave it up in his early teens, if not before that.
• the original bassist of Jimmy Eat World, mitch porter, is mormon but left the band to go on a 2 year mission before they even recorded "static prevails".

oh yeah...
• ed "big daddy" roth, inventor of rat fink. ok, that's stretching it, he doesn't ROCK at all. but he's an awesome artist and made a huge contribution to a truly american artform of custom cars, artwork and hot-rods.
• josh "shag" agle, popular lounge/retro illustrator is a lapsed mormon.

Additional Momo's in the biz:
The late Mick Ronson of Bowie/Spiders From Mars, Lou Reed's transistor, etc. was, believe it or not, born and raised Mormon (see Angela Bowie's silly book for the documentation).
The late Warren Zevon was raised Mormon.
The late Layne Staley from Alice In Chains was supposedly raised mormon as well.
As for living people, some of the kids from the Used are Mormon or were raised as such.
And of course, the most rockingest ones of all: The Jets, of "Crush on You" fame are all mormon.
Oh yeah, jewel was apparently Mormon for a few years growing up.
From the film world:
Aaron Eckhart, Hal Ashby, Katherine Hiegel, Eliza Dushku, Mark "Jimmy Olsen" McClure were all Mormon at one time.

Ok, you won't believe me, but Alice Cooper was raised in some
type of fundamentalist Mormon group - he was the son of the
head minister. I personally read it in
his mid-70s biography. Read it yourself if you don't believe me.

No love at all for "Crazy Horses," I'm afraid.

My favorite response to a Mormon proselytizer is to hit on him.

I have never understood the mass confusion regarding Mormonism that I encounter with people so often.

I grew up in the Bible belt, so I grew up around Christianity as a dominant force. I was raised in ultra-liberal private schools though, and my family is pretty much as non-religious, religiously apathetic as you can get. In his old age and dementia, my grandfather would find flyers for the weekly prayer groups, or whatever, and then rail against how there is a Christian conspiracy in the retirement home out to get him. So, growing up, Christianity has always seemed bizzare to me. Something I could never understand really being a part of.

That said, around seventh grade when my family started running out of money and I was transferred to public schools, I became friends with a group of Mormons. They seemed no weirder or different than any of the other Christians I've seen growing up. I really couldn't tell the difference between them and any other more mainstream Christian faith. They seemed no different; all equally strange.

It wasn't until high school that I realized what most of the country thought about Mormons. It's strange hearing people talk about Mormonism as if it's some sort of foreign African pagan religion on the National Geographic channel. From my vantage point, it really makes no sense. Are the differences that great? I certainly don't see them.

Mickey (modestmickey), Saturday, 25 February 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

Mormons are always getting crap from other Christians because they think Mormonism is a perversion of Christianity.

Mormonism is the punk rock of Christianity.

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Saturday, 25 February 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

Um, actually it IS a perversion of Christianity, just like Jehova's Witnesses. They refer to Christians as "goats" and themselves as pure "lambs". They both took the Bible and added their own ideas to it causing more confusion. There's actually some friction in my family because of this, with the Christians being the ones who get the grief.
If you were to say one religeon is more "punk" I'd say it's Christianity (I already feel stupid for saying this).

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Sunday, 26 February 2006 00:44 (nineteen years ago)

They also refer to non-Mormons as Gentiles, so in accordance with that view, you can be Jewish and a Gentile...

how this thread is germane to "I Love Music" is beyond me, but we can make it so...

someone not mentioned yet as being Mormon at one point is the legendary Mick Ronson (Bowie's guitarist)...

I myself am mormon, although i still really struggle with some issues. the basic tenets are good though: be compassionate and positive and content with what you have.

but yeah, Mick Ronson and 'Harold and Maude' (all apologies about Napoleon Dynamite)

J. Grizzle--Here Comes Treble (trainsmoke), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 03:39 (eighteen years ago)

Actually he's been mentioned twice.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

Ooh, the Harold and Maude guy was Mormon? I was not aware of that. So, Mormons are good at movies called "(someone) and (someone)".

Marmot 4-Tay: The root cause of dragon hatred among power metal bands. (marmotwo, Wednesday, 2 August 2006 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

But so far not so good at movies called "('wacky' character name)".

(we could have a mod move this to ILE and watch a shitstorm ensue)

yer correct...i was hasty.

xpost: yeah, i guess Hal Ashby was raised LDS..mormons do have the "(someone) and (someone)" genre down..although i think 'Tango and Cash' was by a lutheran (kidding)

J. Grizzle--Here Comes Treble (trainsmoke), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, just saw the Ashby ref. upthread. I could see Aaron Eckhart as a smug Mormon missionary, sometimes:
