"My girl is a little animal, she always wants to fuck"

Bes topening line of any song in recent memory and they rock!

And the gal is soooooooo hot.

Ensemble Ed (Ensemble Ed), Thursday, 9 October 2003 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Remember" and "That Great Love Sound" have been on top of my playlist for the past couple of weeks.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 9 October 2003 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

CLASSIC. I love the way they're facsimiles of facsimiles of facsimiles of something which wasn't real anyway... they fake it so real they're beyond fake. "Heartbreak Stroll" pushes all my buttons!

Sharin Foo is amazing. The first time I saw them, this friend (girl) I was with was like "oh my god, I think I'm gay" when she saw her, and at the same time I'd gone "oh my god, I think I'm straight".

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 9 October 2003 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I played the album once and thought it was faceless and derivative to the point of blandness, but I'll have to play it again.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 9 October 2003 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"Noisy Summer" sounds like Jesus & Mary Chain doing a cover of "My Boy Lollipop", and is precisely as great as that description would suggest it isn't. And "That Great Love Sound" is the crashing-est pop song of the year.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 9 October 2003 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Derivative? Of course. Almost all of today's music is.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 9 October 2003 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

one trick ponies with a very neat trick

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 9 October 2003 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I was trying to work out why I liked them but didn't love them. Maybe Jim has it?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 9 October 2003 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I like them: "the great love sound" is a fantastic pop song, and I'm a sucker for the quasi-girl group harmonies and JAMC guitars. Still can't listen to a full album of theirs without getting bored, though: I don't think having every song in the same key does them any favours.

cis (cis), Friday, 10 October 2003 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Too soon to tell. I like that trick that they do, but I may get sick of that one trick awfully quick.

Or maybe I won't, I mean, I loved the JAMC's one trick for over a decade.

kate (kate), Friday, 10 October 2003 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't remember the last time there was so much consensus about a band on I Love Music! The first time I heard them their nice rough molasses kind of feel just made me think they were the best band in the world. But the drop-off was steep. By the third song I'd turned it off and had forgotten about it completely.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 10 October 2003 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

they've made the very good move of releasing their follow-up album quite quickly after their hype started up. keeps the interest without heightening the expectation.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 10 October 2003 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven months pass...
wow, they have more than one album?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:34 (twenty years ago)

they have a very short album/long-ish EP. the album is very good, and the EP is only ok.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:39 (twenty years ago)

I love the explosion of white noise halfway through "The Love Gang." There's at least 4 or 5 songs on that album that I think are great, really. Much more original that they might appear at first glance.

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:51 (twenty years ago)

I am very surprised I am liking their new album "Pretty In Black," considering their first two did nothing for me. They've toned down the JAMC worhsipping and adding a very heavy Phil Spektor/Doo Wop influence (of all things!) There's even a *good* cover of "My Boyfriend's Back."

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 13 March 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

I hope they have a 'hit' this time.

mnm, Sunday, 13 March 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

It's pretty darn catchy on one listen.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 13 March 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Agree with Michael. The cover of "My Boyfriend's Back" is surprisingly worthwhile. In a way they're still aping the J&MC (this is their Some Candy Talking) but unlike J&MC they've done more than just de-fuzz their sound.

dlp9001, Sunday, 13 March 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I've completely turned around from my "Feh" comment from two years ago in the other thread. The new album is great great great and I'm glad they had Richard Gottehrer produce again.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

the video where they pretend 2 b killing each other is fantastic.

piscesboy, Monday, 14 March 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Gottehrer is a pop genius. Maybe Raveonettes have been marketed badly. One thing's for sure they'll never sound like a Gottehrer record on stage.

mnm, Monday, 14 March 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

Are they still identical to The Kills?

La Monte (La Monte), Monday, 14 March 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

THANKS! "Trashcan" is great, but the cover is disappointing.
Bette Bright released a fantastic version in '78 of My Boyfriends.. w/Glen Matlock on bass.

can't speak for the rest of the new album, but the song "Ode to LA" is stupendous.....as close to "Be My Baby" as one could possibly be w/out seeming like a complete rip-off. can't wait for the album.

PB, Saturday, 2 April 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

total crap

breezy, Saturday, 2 April 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

I doubt there is an original melody on the album, but they are such great stealers this time around. "Ode To La" is my favorite track, actually.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 2 April 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

I think they're brilliant. I have fallen head over heels for 'Pretty In Black'.

Anna (Anna), Saturday, 2 April 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone know who's the guest vocalist on "Ode to L.A."?

??????, Sunday, 3 April 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

saw the video for "trashcan" the other day. great clip, cool early '60s nostalgia. rest of the disc isn't doing much for me tho.

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Friday, 13 May 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

I Lurve this record, especially "Here Comes Mary"

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah "Hear Comes Mary" is my fave... but the fact that it so heavily and blatantly plagiarises "(All I Have to Do Is) Dream" by the Everly Brothers sort of taints it.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

I really like this.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

I was struck the other day by how similar "Remember" (the first track on their last album) is to "Just Like Honey" by the JAMC. Blatant rip-off, but still a good song.

They were great on Conan, by the by.

PB, Friday, 13 May 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

That's Ronnie Spector on "Ode to L.A."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 13 May 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Seeing 'em again tonight (first time through was opening for Depeche at Staples Center, tonight is the Detroit Bar -- a rather smaller affair).

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

...and that was a pretty good set, a bit static but the highs were highs. Also, nice job covering both Sonic Youth's "100%" and the Gun Club's "Sex Beat," I'd say!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 June 2007 07:54 (eighteen years ago)

I loved Whip It On, but I never exactly fell in love with the second one. I really should check out the third one after reading this thread. Is there a new one on the way or something?

I know, right?, Friday, 8 June 2007 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

a new album is TBA for this year, according to some upcoming releases lists.

StanM, Friday, 8 June 2007 10:40 (eighteen years ago)

There's some new songs on their MySpace page. Going to see them tonight at the Echo.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 8 June 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

Opening act Midnight Movies is pretty good too -- their set started as basic Velvet/Can worship (no complaints, but that's all it was) but as things went on they kept bringing all sorts of other stuff to bear, and ended on a fine high note.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 June 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

Opening act Midnight Movies is pretty good too

Agreed. I've seen them a couple times before (including the Stereolab show you were at). New album is worthy

I know, right?, Monday, 17 March 2008 04:03 (seventeen years ago)

haha totally. if ever a band's influences are gonna speak for themselves it's these guys

Charlie Howard, Monday, 17 March 2008 04:07 (seventeen years ago)

x-post

'you want the candy' is taking the whole j and m chain thing a little too far, for mine.

Talk about telegraphing an already obvious influence. However, in all honesty I do like that song. I would also add "Hallucinations" to Daniel's list of the best songs on the album (with which I otherwise agree), even though I don't like any of it as much as he does.

_Rockist__Scientist_, Monday, 17 March 2008 04:09 (seventeen years ago)

its actually the beauty of them. Simulacrum I think; I might not have really understood that Baudrillard book.

i think this albums cover art has been overlooked, as a band who have always had really bad design this is a great cover and probably one of the best there will be this year.

I know, right?, Monday, 17 March 2008 04:11 (seventeen years ago)

while i like this album i do think it's their weakest since the debut

electricsound, Monday, 17 March 2008 04:13 (seventeen years ago)

yep rockist, i acknowledge it as an already obvious, given influence. just that that particular song annoys me a tad with its even-more-overt-than-usual nod to the jamc oeuvre :)

agreed on cover art

Charlie Howard, Monday, 17 March 2008 04:14 (seventeen years ago)

Raveonettes basically denied belonging to any particular music scene when I talked to them at SXSW, which I thought was kinda weird/stupid.

fukasaku tollbooth, Monday, 17 March 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

hahah!

i saw them twice at sxsw, both times great but one was just exceptionally well done, way awesome show.

stephen, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 01:50 (seventeen years ago)

one of my fav songs = "My Heartbeat's Dying", the first bonus track on the US version. so so so good.

stephen, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 01:50 (seventeen years ago)

Video for 'You Want The Candy'. Really good (quick, jagged cuts; scuzzy; exciting). One of my favorite songs of the year, no matter how obviously derivative it is.

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 23 March 2008 00:31 (seventeen years ago)

Candy is one of my favorites, but I love a lot of stuff on this disc.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 23 March 2008 00:42 (seventeen years ago)

lust lust lust is pretty great. obv. the JAMC references are huge on the record, but it works cuz the songs are good....also i was suprised by a few moments (like aly walk w.me) that go into actual hellish noise not just "indie noisy-ish guitars".....

in a way they are sort of doing the same thing times new viking is doing for a different set of historical references (JAMC/Kitchens of Distinction vs. GBV/Stiltbreeze shit)

how's the new album? how are they live?

W i l l, Wednesday, 14 October 2009 14:41 (fifteen years ago)

New album is fantastic, lots of variety for a Raveonettes album, the mood is lighter and more fun, the feedback from Lust is scaled back in favor of bigger harmonies and hooks. And they're great live, too!

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 14:49 (fifteen years ago)

The new album has been getting mediocre reviews overall (the last one did too).

I'm always surprised by critical reaction to this band. They sound like their influences (but update that sound, and they don't become pastiche). And they suffer critically for it, unlike a lot of other acts that do the same, e.g., Interpol; Vivian Girls; Crystal Stilts; A Place To Bury Strangers; The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (I like-to-love all these bands, BTW).

Anyway, classic.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 14 October 2009 15:05 (fifteen years ago)

The Raveonettes are better and more consistent than any of the acts Daniel just listed. Anyone digging that cloying Pains album would do themselves a big favor to check out this new Raveonettes one. It's in the same vein (generally) but a much better listen.

Good but weird Raveonettes show last night in Austin. Three songs in, "It's too hot to play drums in Texas!" Next 5-6 songs were all drumless, giving them a more freeform, bubblegum-psych vibe. Each of them did a song mid-set completely solo, while the other just stood there. Three guys from the Black Angels joined them for the last two songs -- "Lust" and "Aly" -- which with two guitars, two drum sets and a fuzzed-out bass sounded thick and powerful. Encore break... then they covered "100%" (Sonic Youth) and called it a night.

Anyway... they headlined the first night of Austin Psych Fest, so pretty sure the focus on noise/freeform structure was intentional. They didn't play anything too "poppy," e.g., no "Last Dance," "Dead Sound," "Candy" or any of their other super-upbeat tunes.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 24 April 2010 16:30 (fifteen years ago)

Some of the songs worked really well without drums, by the way. Others fell flat -- "Break Up Girls" for example, which lost all of its momentum when slowed in pace and played with just guitar and bass.

"Love in a Trashcan" was great.

"Ghost Riders" was great.

"Heart of Stone" (this one was done with drums, early in the set) was fantastic.

i think Observator is a bit thin on proper songs, not to mention i like 'em better in full-on shoegaze mode, or full-on pop mode, than this moody, in-between land of minor key songs with fewer hooks and less guitar noise... opening track is a dagger, tho.

observator is amazing, it's true.... but so is lust lust lust. and so is pe-ahi. i feel like this band is underrated. burying lush melodies under mountains of fuzz and laying ehtereal, sometimes cryptic vocals on top of it all is seen as an easy, tried and true formula. i'm not sure it is though. the raveonettes aren't my bloody valentine, but still there aren't many other bands who do what they do as well.

Hot Drexel Students (Treeship), Saturday, 13 September 2014 11:40 (ten years ago)

I was lukewarm on Observator, but their set at Austin Psych Fest last year was a big highlight and last night's show upped even that. I hadn't really given Pe-ahi a chance yet - but the new songs sound great live. I'll just go ahead and say it - they aren't MBV, but Curve 1993. Their sound is just that unstoppable. Do not miss.
