Elastica - How low can you go?

When "stutter" first came out as a 7" on Deceptive, it famously was sold out within 2 hours of release.

A Month ago, I was finally able to get one for £12, amazed to find that the number of the edition I have is 0002 (out of 1000 I believe).

That's quite sad, surely?

not at all. sad for the person who sold it, maybe. it's sad that anything has to get to collector prices. and this is spoken by someone who has paid collector prices on many occasions.

Sad as in, there are (were) four in Elastica at the time. The on-line shop where I got it is based in Camden.....

heh. i see what you mean. i've known members of bands who don't even own copies of their rarer releases. now *that's* sad

Who says that members of the band always get copies 1,2,3 and 4?

I always insisted on getting number 22 of any of our numbered releases.

And, as always, with numbered releases, there are often unnumbered promo copies, to be given to the press and to band members and record company people and the like.

#1 probably went to steve lamacq

Yeah, record company people are always ahead of band members in the low numbers stakes. Unless you put the record out yourself.

*I* don't have a "proper copy" of The Lollies' first release. But I have the master, so mwah hah hah, screw them all!

kate (kate), Friday, 10 October 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

what does a master look like?

willem (willem), Friday, 10 October 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Even Peter Hook's copy of the Atmosphere/Dead Souls single is numbered in the thousands.

Damian (Damian), Friday, 10 October 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

There are *supposed* to be only 1578 of these. I know for a fact that upwards of twice that exist - some with the same number!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 10 October 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I think someone in the band got #1 - Hooky grumbled about his number in an issue of Q some years ago, as I recall. I didn't know that there were so many copies in existence though.

what does a master look like?

In my case, it looks like an ordinary cassette tape, because it was recorded on a 4-track.

These days, masters are just plain boring data-CDs. Sigh. I liked it better when a master was a huge old reel to reel tape that had to be stored in proper temperature controlled conditions, i.e. not just stuffed underneath yer bed.

that's the image i have (had) of a Master Tape, indeed.
