also good to see pfork now has a decent person to cover hiphop again with new writer mullah omar.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"new"

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I always like Scott's writing, but this review forgets one thing: if I didn't like hair metal and cock rock in the 80s, why would I like it now?

dleone (dleone), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the subtext then is: you are beyond hope.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearly. I did used to get scared by the Bark at the Moon cover though.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott Plagenhoef, I kiss you twice!

(On the other hand, let some of the hataz have a go at the pop tracks on We Are The World, Scott - I click on a Sugababes or Kylie review in anticipation of something nicely idiotic to get the circulation going of a morning and it's always SP giving them their due! Gah!)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott deserves another one for the Richard X review.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Before dying, the old man becomes a child again.

Hunter (Hunter), Friday, 10 October 2003 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no objection to the idea of The Darkness (I'm listening to the new Iron Maiden album right now, and it's probably gonna make my Top Ten), but I heard some of their music on MTV the other day, and that vocalist has Got To Go.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Friday, 10 October 2003 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i equally loved that dexys review

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 10 October 2003 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Plagenhoef is really good, isn't he? He's openminded with good taste. I guess that whole Magnet list debacle made me realize that Pitchfork is actually, all things considered, a good thing. It could just cover boring indie, but it doesn't. And it's probably making MF Doom a lot of money.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I really really dislike this band, but I can see why people would like them. I really really like this line from that piece though, far more than anything The Darkness has done themselves:

"...because making snap judgments -- especially ones based on anything except, y'know, what's coming out of your speakers and whether or not it engages you -- seems like a bit of a foolish thing to do."

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmph.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, I guess I could say their music engages me, in that it engages me to kick the speakers from which the sound is coming from.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 October 2003 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i really like scott p, but sometimes reading his writing feels like listening to the disembodied talking head of the 'ilm massive'. yknow? except it's not really a 'but', because i love the ilm massive, my 'top 10 tracks you like right now' etc posts are textbook ilm pop convert opinion. would a 'taste homogeny' thread be any good? have we had one?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 10 October 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i take that post back. i haven't slept in a long time, btw.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 10 October 2003 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, Mitch - no worries. There is truth in that, in a way. Discovering ILM was a big influence on me and it's more probably pronounced at Pitchfork than at Stylus, where at the time there were more writers with ILM-esque sensibilities (todd and gavin -- both of whom are better at writing about pop/microhouse, etc., than I am, too -- come to mind.) At Pitchfork, any of the guitar bands I like (and most of the American bands I like, frankly) -- ILM 'approved' or not -- are in more capable hands w/other writers so I end up filling in the cracks, so to speak, and writing about a lot of things I enjoy that otherwise may not get covered (e.g. richard x, darkness, and dexys).

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 10 October 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

*probably more*

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 10 October 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Hate to interrupt, fellas; you seem a group of veterans who probably don't take kindly to having to interpret for kids who don't know the lingo. But I gotta ask: what on earth is ILM?

I suppose once someone answers that question, I'll know what "ILM massive" and "ILM-esque" mean, too.

Thanks.

Btw: super review today, Mr. Plagenhoef.

Nat Reilly, Saturday, 11 October 2003 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Never mind. ILM = I Love Music. I get it. Flame away, but I get it.

Nat Reilly, Saturday, 11 October 2003 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

(just wanted to clarify, in the cold, non-dismissive, light of morning that scott's writing is foremost GOOD writing, however much his opinion is 'ilm informed'. any ol' hack can like kelis.)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 11 October 2003 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

don't dismiss snap judgements. but don't stand by them either
