Man, that "Hey Ya" by Outkast is fucking genius. (Sorry if this has already been covered)

You guys here that? I've been out of the loop for a while, so if this has already been covered, sorry, again. But, yeah, man, just saw the video for it, and it totally is gonna fuck up anything I try to write for the next week, because everything I'll try and do is gonna end up sounding just like it. Man, Outkast have outdone themselves yet again. Brilliant, simple, catchy, awesome. Way better than anything that Pharrell guy has put out lately.

*dies, but takes a few people with him*

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 October 2003 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The video's a bit rote, but even I think the song is pretty fucking magnificent.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 October 2003 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the prosecution rests, yr honor.

"Way better than anything that Pharrell guy has put out lately"

But not Chad Hugo, apparently.

billstevejim, Friday, 10 October 2003 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

poor chad.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 October 2003 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The sequence of "Prototype" -> "She Lives In My Lap" -> "Hey Ya!" -> "Roses"

Totally flawless.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 October 2003 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i have listened to the "la la la (excuse me miss again)" instrumental (downloaded by mistake) 9 times in a row now. i would rather be flayed alive than ever hear "hey ya" again.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 October 2003 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

then again i like grime better than IDM or prog house too.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 October 2003 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hey Ya!" is one of my least favorite tracks on The Love Below, fwiw (as well as "She's Alive" and "Make Love Not War").

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 October 2003 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

. i would rather be flayed alive than ever hear "hey ya" again.

A bit extreme, don't you think? Personally speaking, I'd rather be slowly cut apart and fed to ravenous wildebeasts than ever suffer through fuckin' "Frontin'" again.

Something about Pharell's grating falsetto makes me want to stab squirells with very sharp pencils.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 October 2003 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

is this the single? It's boring radio toss.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 October 2003 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds like the music to one of those kids TV science programs, with some really shit singing over the top. Bad work.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 10 October 2003 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Bubba Sparxxx' "Back in the Mud" is better. (I won't say how much better.)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan OTM
The two singles I've heard from the double album have done nothing to convince me I need to buy it.

oops (Oops), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hey Ya" is the only song I really like on The Love Below. It's not enough to make me listen to it very often. "Stand Up" is the only song I really like on Chicken N Beer, and I like it better.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, there's always the Benny Benassi remix of Ghetto Musick to look forward to.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Nate OTM.....I just got that Bubba Sparxxx album and it's fucking incredible from front to back......just so much intelligence, heart and soul....plus the whole thing reminds me of some kind of swamp/country/R&B gumbo, like the 2000s rap equivalent to Charlie Rich or Joe South....I like Hey Ya and the new Outkast just fine, but it pales in comparison to Bubba's focus and Timbaland's productions.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Or like a 2000 rap equivalent to Bobby Gentry's Ode to Billy Joe.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I like that Bubba album quite a bit and I think the production on it is ridiculously good and his lyrics and delivery are impeccable, but none of the songs off that disc burrow their way down into my subconscious like say "Last Call" or "Knowing" or "Dracula's Wedding", like nothing off that Bubba album really sticks with me in a way that it pops into my head when I'm not actually listening to it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

>The two singles I've heard from the double album have done nothing to convince me I need to buy it.

You don't. I got it in the mail on Tuesday or so, and it's leaving on a one-way trip to the used bin tomorrow. The only good thing about "The Way You Move" is the chorus, and I already have Earth, Wind & Fire records, thanks.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know, I've had the chorus to "Comin' Round" by Bubba in my head for days....ditto with Back in the Mud.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Dif strokes dif folks...I personally can't help but question the presence of a heart-beat in the chests of folks who can't acknowledge the lovely smoovness of "Prototype" or the rowdy mindfuck of "Knowing", but I'm beginning to accept that sometimes some people and some songs just aren't meant to be together.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The only good thing about "The Way You Move" is the chorus, and I already have Earth, Wind & Fire records, thanks.

My thoughts exactly! It seems so jumbled, so inappropriate. Like he had a boring song and just threw this good hook in there that didn't fit the rest of the song at all. (btw, I've loved every other Outkast album)

oops (Oops), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

nick, I like the new outkast, but I'm thinking I'll love it when I separate wheat from chaff and make a single-disc 13-15 track album out of it with the highlights. I do like prototype though, and Hey Ya and Ghetto Musick and War (which is probably one of the best responses to the whole Iraq mess I've heard)...

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Psh, that song's got fucking HELLA great verses! Jesus, WTF?

(x-post, that was about "The Way You Move"...but honestly at this point y'all are starting to make me wonder about my sanity [again] for honestly loving almost every moment on [both discs of] this album)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

When "War" kicks in from the intro beat to the main riff I get goosebumps every time without fail.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom -- whenever I hear "Stand Up" I can't get it out of my head for at least two hours. I have yet to get "Hey Ya" stuck in my head.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 10 October 2003 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't totally judge the double album based on the two singles. As much as I love "Hey Ya," I don't think "The Way You Move" is one of Speakerboxxx's better tracks, and neither single really conveys how supremely funky both discs can be. I'd say it's definitely worth owning, but I've probably got my own biases (a rapidly waning interest in indie rock = hip-hop here I come!).

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 10 October 2003 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

solidarity nickalicious - have faith. actually there are a couple of tracks on both discs i'm not feeling at all but 'hey ya' is hella cool (do the kids still say hella?)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 10 October 2003 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

saying 'hella' isnt nearly as cool as saying 'hecka'

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 10 October 2003 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, on 99% of albums that I like, the single is my least favorite song. still, it's hard to go out and buy an album when I haven't liked what I've heard of it, yanno? (esp when i have negative money)

oops (Oops), Friday, 10 October 2003 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I vote that any further Hey Ya threads be immediately locked by a moderator.

Vonda Shepard, Friday, 10 October 2003 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"stand up" is awful too. worst luda single ever.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 10 October 2003 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I vote theads not about how great 'Hey Ya' should be locked

HEY WAIT I'M A MODERATOR

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 10 October 2003 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"stand up" is awful too. worst luda single ever.

Hell yeah. By a long, long way. Most of the record's weak, too.

adaml (adaml), Friday, 10 October 2003 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

When "War" kicks in from the intro beat to the main riff I get goosebumps every time without fail.

I love that moment about as much as anything I've heard this year. It's like he starts out being moderately cool, y'know... I'ma just sit here for a moment and just chat a bit on the whole war thing. All cool like. And then, practically mid-thought, he snaps. "Fuck it! Shit needs to be said right now!"

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 11 October 2003 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"Rollout" is Luda's worst single. "Stand Up" is a grower, although it could still stand to be a few BPMs faster.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 11 October 2003 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"Roll Out" is sooooo not the worst Ludacris single. His flow is BRILLIANT on that

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 11 October 2003 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

is Al short for ALIEN?!?!?!?

Dave M. (rotten03), Saturday, 11 October 2003 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, me and a co-worker got a few laughs this week when he shouted "roll out!" and I hummed the horn riff. I love that shit, and I hardly know it.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 11 October 2003 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

zing!

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 11 October 2003 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

""stand up" is awful too. worst luda single ever. "

????

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 11 October 2003 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I like "Roll Out" and "Stand Up", although I could do without the baby Luda in the "Stand Up" video peeing on a woman when he's getting his diaper changed...

Steve Kiviat (Steve K), Saturday, 11 October 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

LIstening to the entire Outkast double album last night for the first time was incredibly exhausting.

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 11 October 2003 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I kind of wanted to die afterwards. (yeah there was some stuff I liked on it, sure, but whooo)

are there are any 2 hour plus "albums" that AREN'T exhausting in their entirety?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 October 2003 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean is Peel Slowly And See four great albums with lots of bonus stuff or a 5CD listening experience?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 October 2003 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

good point. I never listen to any double album, no matter how much I love it, all in one sitting. I try to avoid listening to more than an hour of one band/artist in the space of a day anyway, I burn out on stuff I like easily.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 11 October 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

MAN, now I really wish they'd put out Plastic Ono Band/McCartney back in the day.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 October 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

or A.M./Trace. Not In My Airforce/Carnival Boy.

Diva/Greetings From The Gutter. Faith/Son Of Albert!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 October 2003 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

jess is right in that "la la la (excuse me miss again)" is an amazing song (but "stand up" is good too, though ludacris's rapping isn't up to his usual knockout par)

dave k, Sunday, 12 October 2003 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
I'm real fit, I listened to the whole thing and had enough energy to go for a walk later

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 27 October 2003 06:25 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Can someone please please email me and let me know what earth wind and fire song the chorus of "the way you move me" by outkast is from.

I've been lookin all over for the original song.

Chris

chris t kurtis, Thursday, 25 December 2003 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

hey why is it pushing things forward when Dre sings but not when Ja does!?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 25 December 2003 06:07 (twenty-one years ago)

the producers like dre more than ja. duh.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 25 December 2003 06:24 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

Good song.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 26 May 2008 21:18 (seventeen years ago)

I kinda hated this song at first, but then I sorta began to like it, but now I don't want to ever hear it again. I guess it's a nice tune, as far as Outkast floor filler go, gimme "B.O.B." any day.

Tuomas, Monday, 26 May 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)

"but as far as"

Tuomas, Monday, 26 May 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

Also, it was shamelessly plagiarized by the Finnish dance act Beats & Styles, for their "Mosquito Dance", a song about how terrible mosquitoes are in the summer.

Tuomas, Monday, 26 May 2008 21:29 (seventeen years ago)

Biggest single of the decade?

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 26 May 2008 23:30 (seventeen years ago)

Also, it was shamelessly plagiarized by the Finnish dance act Beats & Styles, for their "Mosquito Dance", a song about how terrible mosquitoes are in the summer.

AND THIS IS A CRITICISM HOW?

Noodle Vague, Monday, 26 May 2008 23:32 (seventeen years ago)

That "Mosquito Dance" tune sounds a lot more like "Pump It" by the Black Eyed Peas than "Hey Ya."

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 26 May 2008 23:32 (seventeen years ago)

AND THIS IS A CRITICISM HOW?

It's not criticism really, I like the song.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 08:39 (seventeen years ago)

Plus the featured vocalist on "Mosquito Dance" is the legendary pop singer Danny, of Danny & Armi fame.
