TS: First Band You Ever Saw vs. The last Band You've Seen

In my particular case, that would be....

DEVO versus IRON MAIDEN

Hmmmm....a formidable match-up, but I truly will have to go with Devo, who were simply more innovative than Maiden.

Yours?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 October 2003 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

(ignoring all the crap local bands before I saw a well-known band)
Turbonegro VS King Crimson

KC wins bigtime. Yes, 2003 King Crimson. I think they're the only one of those ol' prog giants whom I can honestly say I like newer material by, though Belew is bugs me at times.

If I hadn't been strapped for cash it would've been Turbonegro VS Acid Mothers Temple and Ruins, who I bet would've won too. OORPH!

Øystein Reg. Varemerke (Øystein H-O), Saturday, 11 October 2003 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I like 80's era King Crimson (circa Discipline), but the latter period "double trio" Crimson leaves me cold and clammy. Is Tony Levin still in the band?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 October 2003 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Groundstate at the Hamtramck House in like 1992 Vs. The Soledad Brothers at the Magic Stick last weekend.

No Contest, the Soledad Brothers freekin' rule.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Saturday, 11 October 2003 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

No, Levin and Bruford are no longer in the band.

Oh, I remembered later that I've actually seen Removal since then, so I guess Turbonegro wins after all.

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Saturday, 11 October 2003 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Chubby Checker vs. Calexico

Well I was five for the first one. I vaguely remember enjoying it. I might have to go with Calexico if I put the childhood nostalgia aside.

Erick Bieritz (Imbroglio), Saturday, 11 October 2003 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

THE SPIN DOCTORS VS. SOME SHITTY FOLK ACT THAT PLAYED AT THE RADIO STATION THIS IS THE WORST ONE EVER :(

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 11 October 2003 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Rush vs. Ornette Coleman

Ornette :)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 11 October 2003 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The Jeff Healey Band vs. Erase Errata.

I can't choose.

Dave M. (rotten03), Saturday, 11 October 2003 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Frank Zappa vs the Mountain Goats.

I was more excited by FZ (being the first concert and all) but he has since put out a lot of crap whereas none of what I heard from John was crap. Also, he's dead and doesn't need my love and I met John, so Mountain Goats!

nickn (nickn), Saturday, 11 October 2003 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Doobie Brothers vs. Dismemberment Plan

Yeah, pretty much everything I've seen since beats that. Then again, I didn't have much of a choice in the matter of my first show.

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 11 October 2003 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

supergroove vs the futurians. THE FUTURIANS!!!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 11 October 2003 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Cliff Richard v Spiritualized

Spiritualized, of course, but there is some strange synchronicity here. The first was on a church trip, the latter was in a former church building. Both sang about God a lot (though the only one to do so sincerely gets mocked for it) and both covered ‘Amazing Grace’.

stevo (stevo), Saturday, 11 October 2003 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

If only this thread had started a week ago, I could have retained some slight vestige of dignity by naming Lungfish as the last band. Now I may invite universal derision by admitting to Nashville Pussy.

First? Who can remember? Pick any one from Hollies / Swinging Blue Jeans / Stones / Searchers / Dave Clark Five / etc back in '64.

2003 beats 1964 only because Ruyter Suys had yet to be invented back then.

chris j (chris j), Saturday, 11 October 2003 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Aztec Camera vs The Rolling Stones. (I'm choosing to ignore the fact that like everyone else in the Highlands, the first band I actually saw live was Runrig. It's like a rite of passage, therefore doesn't count)

Aztec Camera, no contest.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 11 October 2003 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Dinosaur Jr vs Bon Jovi! Together they would form the world's greatest supergroup.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 11 October 2003 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I may invite universal derision by admitting to Nashville Pussy.

Nashville Pussy were a gloriously prurient force of supernature when Corey Parks was still in the band.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 11 October 2003 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Beastie Boys vs Zoot Woman. Utterly thriling teenage mega event vs rather dull what's-the-fuss about non-starter...

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 11 October 2003 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Tori Amos vs Mis-Teeq... I cannot decide. Right now, I'd rather listen to Mis-Teeq.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 11 October 2003 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Chaka Kahn v. Iron & Wine. Oops, I'm catching him tonight. I hereby postdate this reply.

el maury, Saturday, 11 October 2003 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

metallica vs. R.E.M.

The Metallica show (with Queensryche opening...do I have to count that pseudo-intellectual warbling mess, do I?) was frightening, awe-inspiring and LOUD. This was their "One" tour, their last good album. Everyone had stuff written on their jean-jackets with Sharpie markers. That "Lady Justice" statue fell apart at the end.

I got into R.E.M. late in life, and their new tour didn't cover much of the old, great material. Fun, but I did not reach that concert Omega-point.

p.j. (Henry), Saturday, 11 October 2003 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

barenaked ladies vs. numbers and erase eratta

Um I think I saw the barenaked ladies by accident. They're the first show that I saw that I can remember right now. Numbers were incredible and Erase Eratta weren't bad either so that grouping wins.

Mike Salmo (salmo), Saturday, 11 October 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not counting local bands, so R.E.M. beats Kings Of Leon. God that was easy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 11 October 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

the Monkees vs. Shack. too bad their record burned up cuz otherwise maybe shack could've learned how to sing decently instead of pissing away their voices via fags and the drink. their audience and banter win hands down, though.

j. pantsman (jpantsman), Saturday, 11 October 2003 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Matthew Sweet 1992 (first "real" show @ Blind Pig in AA) vs. Fischerspooner 2003 (last weekend @ The Majestic in Detroit)

Well, as far as "show" goes, it's Fischerspooner hands down -- now the cd makes more sense -- but you never forget your first time, especially when Richard Lloyd is ripping shit up on guitar.

The best part about this thread has been thinking about all the concerts I've seen in the past 12 years...and all the shows I wish I would have seen instead.

Erick H (Erick H), Saturday, 11 October 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Accept/Dio vs. Low/Radiohead.

Radiohead were better in 2001 than this past Thursday. Plus, being 14 in 1986, I was probably more excited about seeing Accept. Low were so bad, Dio (who I've never loved) whips 'em with ease. I gotta go with Accept for the win. (The fact that I heard ex-vocalist Udo's brand-new live album, which features "Metal Heart," "Fast As A Shark," and an eight-minute "Balls To The Wall," is probably affecting this decision, but fuck it—I stand by my vote.)

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 11 October 2003 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The first concert I ever saw was White Zombie, Rev. Horton Heat, and Babes in Toyland with Kyuss opening, so I guess Kyuss would be the first band, and that would be VS. Turbonegro (ironic, because a few months ago TRBNGR opened for Queens of the Stone Age, who's member(s) were in Kyuss at one point), but TRBNGR wins.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 11 October 2003 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Space in about 95 versus a Liverpool indie band, called Victor FME, who play upbeat pop with no irony and no pretensions and did a Dexys style cover of the theme from Fresh Prince.

Remarkably similar when you come to think about it. But the sheer thrill of hearing something deliberately and euphorically loud for the first time, with other people who seemed to enjoy it, honestly, and I really mean honestly, felt like more of a revolutionary experience than losing my virginity.

I was so much cooler and more laid back about having sex than hearing britpop live.

God knows what would have happened if I could have had sex when I was 14. How revolutionary would that have felt?

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Saturday, 11 October 2003 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

.38 Special vs. Papa M

It's not a contest, really. Paz Lechantin never played in .38 Special.

johnny fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 11 October 2003 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Puya vs. Turbonegro

Turbonegor wins.

Cacaman Flores, Sunday, 12 October 2003 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

What's with the widespread Turbonegro referencing?

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Sunday, 12 October 2003 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Devo v. Yo La Tengo

Devo wins, even though YLT covered "Gates of Steel."

mike a (mike a), Sunday, 12 October 2003 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

ELO (1978?) vs. Broken Social Scene.

BSS was very good, but they towered over the ELO show cuz ELO were the worst thing EVER!!!!!!

peepee (peepee), Sunday, 12 October 2003 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheap Trick 83 vs. Los Straightjackets 03

was bored with the Elvis Brothers openening act, but eager to experience the folklore of a concert(kiss army i was) soblown apart by how powerful Cheap Trick were(they were reunited with their original bassist Tom)that i will never be able to match the groovy everything is possible feeling i got from that concert again(came close a few times), the straights were grebt but better when i've seen them previously. and they didnt play University Blvd.

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Sunday, 12 October 2003 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Mega City Four vs Four Tet. MC4 win the live battle by quite a way, but Four Tet wins on record.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 12 October 2003 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Bon Jovi (1987) vs. Michael Franti and Spearhead (this past Friday)...seeing as how Spearhead put on what was an out-of-nowhere-SURPRISE!-one-of-the-best-sets-I've-ever-seen, and also seeing as how I fell asleep for the last half-hour or so of that Bon Jovi show, I'm pulling way over onto the side of the latter.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 13 October 2003 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Actual first :
REALLY FREE - Christian rock band toured schools, influenced bt Jesus and Free (kossoff, Ralphs etc) and were actually not bad!

But First and Last:

SQUEEZE : RICHARD ASHCROFT

Squeeze were OK, I remember reading a Kurt Cobain interview where they would go and see Squeeze play as not much happened in 'Aberdeen, USA?' wherever. Thought - yeah, that was how it was in Reading UK.

Ashcroft was umm quite good, you know? he just shades it I guess.

(Really Free are in danger of shading this. Better go and see a fairly good band soon...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 13 October 2003 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

david bowie vs. hidden cameras
i was so impressed by the whole experience (three hour busride with Bowie-freaks, the size of the stadium/stage) that bowie wins. hidden cameras were veryvery good tho.

ask me again in three days and the match will be bowie '87 vs. bowie '03...

willem (willem), Monday, 13 October 2003 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha: Doobie Brothers -vs- Spiritualized.
Sounds like a no-contest? Except that at the Doobie Brothers I was a little kid and had a great time just being out. Spiritualized was crowded, my feet were sore from walking all day, I could hardly move and the beer sucked. So the Doobie may have actually been a better experience. (Not that I would see them again..)

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 13 October 2003 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! Mark would that have been when Squeeze supported Radio Stars and Eddie & The Hot Rods at The Top Rank by any chance?!?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 13 October 2003 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Rootjoose [see "first band you ever saw" thread passim] vs Franz Ferdinand. I enjoyed both of them, but in very different ways.

Really, I should be posting on a thread titled: "TS: being 14 and a hyperactive pain in the arse vs. being 23 and just a cunt full stop" :(

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 13 October 2003 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah.. Reading .. (how you get that?) Right on the top rank at reading - not the rods and radio stars supporting, that would have been great (i think). I remember seeing Squeeze twice that year. desperate times.

I was going to say Jackie Lynton was supporting , but I'm sure now, that was "nine below zero"

God I can't remember. I have a vague recollection of someone at a keyboard singing some calypsoish tune about sitting in the noon-day sun.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 13 October 2003 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

You mentioned Reading festival on another thread and I guessed you must be local In fact the story about your mate deciding not to spend the money his parents had given him for new boots is ringing a very faint bell!).

I'm sure I only saw Squeeze twice that year, the other time being at the Festival but that description of "....someone at a keyboard singing some calypsoish tune about sitting in the noon-day sun" sounds vaguely familiar too!

Of course back then Squueze weren't the nicle little pop band Kurt Cobain saw this was back when they used to come on stage wearing flashers macks and sing songs about making obscene phone calls.

So were you actually from Reading? Where did you hang out and which bands were you into? You weren't Star Crew at any time I don't suppose?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 13 October 2003 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Boston versus Roxy Music

Joe (Joe), Monday, 13 October 2003 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

That calypso singing keyboard fella.... he wasn't the support for XTC at the Top Rank around the same time was he?!?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 13 October 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Just looked up on Google, and got two dates:

Nov 29 1981 and Nov 5 1982.

I'm pretty sure it was both of those. Definately the nice band of Kurt's memory. No support details. I saw they also played March 1978, that was probably yours...

OH GOD I HAVE JUST HAD A FLASHBACK!! I now remember the first gig with awful clarity...

amend amend...

SLIK : RICHARD ASHCROFT !!

I'd won some records at the local radio station and they used to want you to go down to them to collect them (Wow! a visit to a real radio station!) so Me, my sister, and various mates went down. And we met Slik back when they were about as old as Blue. They signed various things and I got free tickets. So we went. This was when "don't take your love away" was their latest, and "he's a punk" had gone nowhere. Looking back, their time was not quite up then, they had at least two weeks left.

Anyhow, I have to say they were better than Richard Ashcroft. I do have to get out (more)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 13 October 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Simple Minds vs. Killing Joke. Both relatively tepid experiences..

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Monday, 13 October 2003 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"I saw they also played March 1978, that was probably yours..."

Yup, that would have been the one.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 13 October 2003 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Culture Club vs. Constantines

I'll take the latter, though one of their opening bands was gratingly awful...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 13 October 2003 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Steely Dan '94 vs. Goldfrapp '03.

Although I don't doubt that Steely Dan will ultimately stand up as the better band, Goldfrapp's show wins. Alison plays the sexpot role to the hilt, with boots, red wine, military salutes, and theremin-in-crotch antics. Excellent bass player she's got, too. I was at the stage, in front of his pedals; it was a treat to get all the bass from the monitors.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Posies vs. Yo La Tengo

winner Posies. Yo La induces my lower back to spasms now. So boring, I cannot stand upright at any of their shows anymore. Although, they had the best heckler that screamed "Whoopty-fucking-do!!!" after their songs. But I believe it was someone from the Aislers Set.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Mighty Mighty Bosstones vs. Sigur Ros.

The Bosstones win.

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Rollins Band vs. Trad Gras och Stenar

septugenarian Swedish hippies win.

hstencil, Tuesday, 14 October 2003 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Orbital vs Mogwai

Mogwai. I still can't forgive the Bon Jovi/Belinda sample.

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
.38 Special vs. Art Brut

This contest is so blowing my mind right now, I don't even know how to pick between an apple and an orange (with a mullet).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 June 2006 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

boom crash opera vs wolf eyes

the noise dudes take this one in a canter. freezing my arse off watching the former - at a scout jamboree! - was a fairly unpleasant experience.

indie disco dancer, sweet romancer (haitch), Saturday, 24 June 2006 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

I remember hating that song "Onion Skin" (or whatever it was).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 June 2006 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

Anthrax vs Kool Keith

Keith was pretty lacklustre the other week, and Anthrax were the rockingest thing my fourteen year old brain had been subjected to. So Anthrax.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Saturday, 24 June 2006 13:37 (eighteen years ago)

hahahaha, Albert King vs. Robert Fripp

Um, uh, I have to go with Fripp.

I will commence to drop a knowledge bomb. (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 24 June 2006 13:43 (eighteen years ago)
