DEVO versus IRON MAIDEN
Hmmmm....a formidable match-up, but I truly will have to go with Devo, who were simply more innovative than Maiden.
Yours?

KC wins bigtime. Yes, 2003 King Crimson. I think they're the only one of those ol' prog giants whom I can honestly say I like newer material by, though Belew is bugs me at times.
If I hadn't been strapped for cash it would've been Turbonegro VS Acid Mothers Temple and Ruins, who I bet would've won too. OORPH!

No Contest, the Soledad Brothers freekin' rule.
― Disco Nihilist (mjt), Saturday, 11 October 2003 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)
Oh, I remembered later that I've actually seen Removal since then, so I guess Turbonegro wins after all.
― Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Saturday, 11 October 2003 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)
Well I was five for the first one. I vaguely remember enjoying it. I might have to go with Calexico if I put the childhood nostalgia aside.

I was more excited by FZ (being the first concert and all) but he has since put out a lot of crap whereas none of what I heard from John was crap. Also, he's dead and doesn't need my love and I met John, so Mountain Goats!
― nickn (nickn), Saturday, 11 October 2003 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)
Yeah, pretty much everything I've seen since beats that. Then again, I didn't have much of a choice in the matter of my first show.

Spiritualized, of course, but there is some strange synchronicity here. The first was on a church trip, the latter was in a former church building. Both sang about God a lot (though the only one to do so sincerely gets mocked for it) and both covered ‘Amazing Grace’.
― stevo (stevo), Saturday, 11 October 2003 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)
First? Who can remember? Pick any one from Hollies / Swinging Blue Jeans / Stones / Searchers / Dave Clark Five / etc back in '64.
2003 beats 1964 only because Ruyter Suys had yet to be invented back then.

The Metallica show (with Queensryche opening...do I have to count that pseudo-intellectual warbling mess, do I?) was frightening, awe-inspiring and LOUD. This was their "One" tour, their last good album. Everyone had stuff written on their jean-jackets with Sharpie markers. That "Lady Justice" statue fell apart at the end.
I got into R.E.M. late in life, and their new tour didn't cover much of the old, great material. Fun, but I did not reach that concert Omega-point.
― p.j. (Henry), Saturday, 11 October 2003 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)
Um I think I saw the barenaked ladies by accident. They're the first show that I saw that I can remember right now. Numbers were incredible and Erase Eratta weren't bad either so that grouping wins.

Well, as far as "show" goes, it's Fischerspooner hands down -- now the cd makes more sense -- but you never forget your first time, especially when Richard Lloyd is ripping shit up on guitar.
The best part about this thread has been thinking about all the concerts I've seen in the past 12 years...and all the shows I wish I would have seen instead.
― Erick H (Erick H), Saturday, 11 October 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)
Radiohead were better in 2001 than this past Thursday. Plus, being 14 in 1986, I was probably more excited about seeing Accept. Low were so bad, Dio (who I've never loved) whips 'em with ease. I gotta go with Accept for the win. (The fact that I heard ex-vocalist Udo's brand-new live album, which features "Metal Heart," "Fast As A Shark," and an eight-minute "Balls To The Wall," is probably affecting this decision, but fuck it—I stand by my vote.)

Remarkably similar when you come to think about it. But the sheer thrill of hearing something deliberately and euphorically loud for the first time, with other people who seemed to enjoy it, honestly, and I really mean honestly, felt like more of a revolutionary experience than losing my virginity.
I was so much cooler and more laid back about having sex than hearing britpop live.
God knows what would have happened if I could have had sex when I was 14. How revolutionary would that have felt?

was bored with the Elvis Brothers openening act, but eager to experience the folklore of a concert(kiss army i was) soblown apart by how powerful Cheap Trick were(they were reunited with their original bassist Tom)that i will never be able to match the groovy everything is possible feeling i got from that concert again(came close a few times), the straights were grebt but better when i've seen them previously. and they didnt play University Blvd.

But First and Last:
SQUEEZE : RICHARD ASHCROFT
Squeeze were OK, I remember reading a Kurt Cobain interview where they would go and see Squeeze play as not much happened in 'Aberdeen, USA?' wherever. Thought - yeah, that was how it was in Reading UK.
Ashcroft was umm quite good, you know? he just shades it I guess.
(Really Free are in danger of shading this. Better go and see a fairly good band soon...

I was going to say Jackie Lynton was supporting , but I'm sure now, that was "nine below zero"
God I can't remember. I have a vague recollection of someone at a keyboard singing some calypsoish tune about sitting in the noon-day sun.
― mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 13 October 2003 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)
I'm sure I only saw Squeeze twice that year, the other time being at the Festival but that description of "....someone at a keyboard singing some calypsoish tune about sitting in the noon-day sun" sounds vaguely familiar too!
Of course back then Squueze weren't the nicle little pop band Kurt Cobain saw this was back when they used to come on stage wearing flashers macks and sing songs about making obscene phone calls.
So were you actually from Reading? Where did you hang out and which bands were you into? You weren't Star Crew at any time I don't suppose?

Nov 29 1981 and Nov 5 1982.
I'm pretty sure it was both of those. Definately the nice band of Kurt's memory. No support details. I saw they also played March 1978, that was probably yours...
OH GOD I HAVE JUST HAD A FLASHBACK!! I now remember the first gig with awful clarity...
amend amend...
SLIK : RICHARD ASHCROFT !!
I'd won some records at the local radio station and they used to want you to go down to them to collect them (Wow! a visit to a real radio station!) so Me, my sister, and various mates went down. And we met Slik back when they were about as old as Blue. They signed various things and I got free tickets. So we went. This was when "don't take your love away" was their latest, and "he's a punk" had gone nowhere. Looking back, their time was not quite up then, they had at least two weeks left.
Anyhow, I have to say they were better than Richard Ashcroft. I do have to get out (more)

― mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 13 October 2003 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)
Although I don't doubt that Steely Dan will ultimately stand up as the better band, Goldfrapp's show wins. Alison plays the sexpot role to the hilt, with boots, red wine, military salutes, and theremin-in-crotch antics. Excellent bass player she's got, too. I was at the stage, in front of his pedals; it was a treat to get all the bass from the monitors.
― derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)
winner Posies. Yo La induces my lower back to spasms now. So boring, I cannot stand upright at any of their shows anymore. Although, they had the best heckler that screamed "Whoopty-fucking-do!!!" after their songs. But I believe it was someone from the Aislers Set.
