"come back and stay" is a great song. so, why then did paul young turn to such shit?

i'm sitting in a law library right now, and i am listening to a web radio station in headphones (thank heavens for small mercies). paul young's "come back and stay" came on, it was great ... and i'm left wondering, why did he suck so much afterwards?

alright, when i was 15 i had secret of association (or whatever the record was that had "everytime you go" on it). it was pretty good, too ... so include that one in "classic" PY too.

but anyway, "come back and stay" essentially did effortlessly what "greater" talents like Gary Numan and Martin Gore were trying to do circa the same time ... fretless bass, soulful singing, great synth arrangement, romantic torment. even 20 years after the fact, it's pretty singular. why did PY turn into yer standard-issue soul-belter for bored hausfraus?

Paul Young released the awful "Between Two Fires" album in 1986, and his career halted. Later on, he has been back on form on several excellent tracks, but nobody wanted to listen anymore.

Because that was the last track to feature the Fabulous Wealthy tarts on backing vocals. They were 'let go' for financial reasons, and that was it baby. Not everything before it was wonderful, but everything afterwards was rrrrrrrrrrrghh. plop

Yeah, "Come Back and Stay" was a great tune. You guy's gotta remember though, during the 80's to early 90's, that caliber of music was expected and frequently delivered. Now, you've got nothing but a bunch of whinney bands, go figure. But that really was a moving song.

Please don't get wrong, "come back and stay" composer is not Paul Young but is Jack Lee, who composed the song for Young and played it in his album "That's Totaly Pop".

This in from Wikipedia.

Lee's most famous composition is "Hanging on the Telephone". Originally a Nerves number released to little notice in 1976, Blondie made the song famous through a UK top 5 single cover version from their hugely successful album Parallel Lines. The song remains a popular cover choice of bands today, even if many groups are unfamiliar with any version predating Blondie's. Lee also contributed another number to Parallel Lines, "Will Anything Happen?", and later wrote a hit for Paul Young, "Come Back and Stay".

Lee has also released a solo album entitled Greatest Hits, Vol. 1.

"Everytime You Go Away" is a song where I prefer Paul Young/Laurie Latham's arrangement while I am more into the way Daryl Hall sings the original. Thus, the perfect version is a combination of those two.

Jack Lee was such a great songwriter. Did a lot of great work for others, but completely ignored on his own terms. Kinda reminds me of Jason Falkner in that regard.
