Ronnie James Dio: C or D?(now RJD R.I.P.)

Goddamn, were Rainbow the worst band ever or what? I'm pretty indulgent and charitable when it comes to 70s bald/fat pubmetal (I've seen Metalworks loads of times! Covers band with one of Priest's ex-drummers!) but hearing "Stargazer" & shit again, I was like "I can't believe anyone could possibly be this bad. Not the Darkness, not Uriah Heep, not anybody!" Even the guitar sounds and riffs are terrible, and they sound like they were produced by whoever did Elvis' movie soundtracks!

(that is probably entirely Blackmore's fault tho, considering his peculiar 'personality'. 'Heaven and Hell' was fine. What say everyone re 'Denhumanizer'?)

The odd thing is, Blackmore's folk project is fantastic.

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 12 October 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

did you change your mind about the band after typing the thread title?

I saw dio live in the 'eighties, and it was shit. Worse than anvil or ratt even, though not worse than zodiac mindwarp, who probably was a kind of proto-darkness figure. 1/2 way through the gig i got so bored w/thee sluggardly feel, naff solos and general crapness that I left the auditorium and went to the bar where i eavesdropped on the roadie's conversations, which were teh funney.

rainbow - meh. nowt nor summat.

Dio opening for Maiden this year was a fair bit of ridiculousness but to his credit the man himself acted more like a raconteur trotting out the familiar hits (which he was) rather than a *rock star* during the between song bits. During the songs themselves, er.

You know, I actually like Dio's hilarious vocals, and he's sang a good song from time to time.
But by gum, I don't think he's EVER sang on a truly good album.
He's pretty much put a face to bland, generic commercial hard rock/heavy metal.
Dud.

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Sunday, 12 October 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard much, but "I Could Have Been A Dreamer" is some kind of genius.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 12 October 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure if I'd call him a classic, but I certainly enjoyed Dio-era Sabbath for whatever reason. Heaven and Hell is a ridiculously catchy album, despite Dio getting into wizards, dragons, and fairies in his lyrics like always. I enjoy his voice, but yes, the lyrics are a bit too much for me...

Running with the wolf pack
Feel like I'm never coming back
And everytime there's sunshine
I'm blind, yeah

I am everybody
And everyone that I know is me
Everyone that I know won't see

I could have been a dreamer
I could have been a shooting star
I could have been a dreamer, yeah

I'm another number
And you know the numbers must agree
But everytime the wind blows
I can't fly - why?

We take away tomorrow
And never see the end of today
Lock it up and send it away - forever

I could have been a dreamer
I could have been a shooting star
I could have been a dreamer
Cause dreams are what we are
I could have been a dreamer

Running with the wolf pack
Feel like I'm never coming back
But maybe that was sunshine
That I saw

I've heard about a rainbow
I've heard it makes you crazy
I think I'm goin' crazy
Crazy cause I see

I could have been a dreamer
I could have been a shooting star
I could have been a dreamer
Cause dreams are what we are

I could have been a dreamer
I could have been the one to fly
I always could have been a dreamer
Cause dreamers never die, no!

_holy diver_ = class-diddly-assic. even if it were only for the title track, "stand up and shout" and "don't talk to strangers" (with the great standard quiet-opening that suddenly ends with a loud howl from mr. dio).

i like the first rainbow album. not all the way through, but there are a few decent tracks.

your null fame (yournullfame), Sunday, 12 October 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm embarrassed to say this but i actually like the 3 Rainbow albums with Dio.Granted i was 16 when i heard them but the more he sang about Dungeons & Dragons stuff the more i liked it.Live they were crap as the endless solo's went on & on.The Sabbath stuff i dug also & Sabbath with Dio live were much better thab Sabbath with Ozzy live at least the times that i saw them.Course by the time i saw Sabbath Ozzy & the band pretty much hated each other.
As for Dio solo stuff yeah it was lame generic metal crap & still is. Never cared for it.
I should say though i find the whole sword & sorcery angle in metal kind of fun.I mean i much prefer those lyrics to the usual miscogeny that most metal bands crank out.I still cringe when i hear Robert Plant singing about sqeezing his lemon.
As for Blackmore's Night it's basically Rainbow Mk.1 lite. He's just added medieval music to the sword & sworcery lyrics which maybe is why i like it.
Look on the bright side.Dio could be Tony Martin

evan chronister (evan chronister), Sunday, 12 October 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the songs Holy Diver and Man on the Siliver Mountain are great. I saw Dio in a small club and it was the scariest crowd I've ever been in, very violent and drunk. Way scarier than any rap or hardcore punk show i've been to...

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 13 October 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
I still like the first Rainbow album, where it was basically Elf (who I think were decent) with Ritchie Blackmore - sort of half boogie / pub-rock, half fantasy / proto-metal. Mr. Padavona hasn't yet given over to full-time growling, and I prefer his voice many times over Ian Gillan's or David Coverdale's*. I didn't like "Rising" very much, as I recall.

*His Majesty Rod "Whose Boots They Are Not Fit To Tie" Evans is another matter

I just got Mob Rules! It's fucking awesome! Country Girl is a champagne jam! It's secretly a better album than Heaven and Hell, but don't tell anyone, it'll be our secret!

Holy Diver is classic

latebloomer's napkin (latebloomer), Friday, 7 July 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

Holy Diver = Classic. Sabbath Albums = Classic. "Man on the Silver Mountain" = Classic. Ambivalent about most of the rest.

Toad Roundgrin (noodle vague), Friday, 7 July 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

Rainbow Rising is a total classic, as are the Dio Sabbath albums, including Dehumanizer.

Bill Magill (Bill Magill), Friday, 7 July 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

I've never actually owned the Rainbow studio albums w/Dio, but I had a 2CD set of mid-70s liveage that was unspeakably clotted with one endless guitar solo after another. That's probably why I never bought the studio stuff - the songs seemed rudimentary, scaffolding on which Blackmore could clamber and wank.

My two cents: Ronnie James Dio grew up in my fiance's hometown, Cortland, NY, which recently named some one block boulevard across from the Rubbermaid factory after him.

The town has a lot of Sicilian immigrants (his real last name is Pardovana). Apparently, Little Ronnie was the originator of the Devil Horns metal sign (that is, the thumb, index and pinkie finger) — or rather, his little Sicilian grandmother was, as she used it to ward off the evil eye. He learned it from her and the rest is history...

My two cents: Ronnie James Dio grew up in my fiance's hometown, Cortland, NY, which recently named some one block boulevard across from the Rubbermaid factory after him.

I grew up just north of Cortland (in Syracuse). My dad gave Dio a few singing lessons many, many years back. I worked with a woman from Homer, which is a small town just outside of Cortland, and she was still pissed at Ronnie because when he got big he was going around telling people he was from Cortland when in fact he was from Homer. Funny shit. Maybe Homer should protest the naming of that street.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Friday, 7 July 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

Wow — so she claims he's NOT really from Cortland? Scandal! Particularly so since I gather one of the things he said about Cortland back when was that "all there was to do there is bowl and drink beer." My guess is: Homer could have him after that.

My fiance wants to know, QN: what's your family name?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 7 July 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

Classic Dio moment: Guitarist Vic Campbell, in a guitar magazine "blindfold test", listening to and dismissing the Live/Evil version of "Paranoid", unable to recognize the vocalist (his then-employer).

Native, Homer is something like two/three miles away from Cortland. With modern strip mall sprawl, I'm sure one would never know when passing from one town to the other. But this woman was just so damn upset about Ronnie not giving Homer its due. We both worked at a fabric store in the early-90s.

The last name is Farrar, and like so many from that area my grandparents are from Italy.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Friday, 7 July 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

I don't claim to be an authority on Dio, but the fact that he was the driving force behind the Hear 'n' Aid "Stars" project makes him a genius in my book.

QN, I know Homer's right next door to Cortland — I guess I should've made that clear. That makes the whole thing that much more hilarious! It's like the New Springfield/Old Springfield episode of The Simpsons.

This guy ain't afraid to admit he's from Homer. Cortland is given props for being a dairy community that bred a surprising number of big time rockers.

I'll side w/Cortland in the Cortland vs. Homer battle. My high school sweetheart went to SUNY Cortland.

I've heard that 1987's Dream Evil is supposed to be pretty good. It's odd, though, that Rhino Flashback reissued that, but not The Last In Line. I picked up a Rock Candy remaster of Holy Diver a few years ago with an interview with Dio. After Last In Line, I don't know if anything else is really worth getting.

Fastnbulbous, Sunday, 31 August 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know if it's just the smurfiness of it or what (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 30 November 2009 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

I've seen him twice...and his voice is still in incredible shape. Dickinson has lost a lot of power, Halford can still do it but you can see him really push to hit those notes now, but Ronnie seems to do it so effortlessly. And he's a consummate showman. Maybe cheesy now, but respectful to the crowd, friendly, will shake a fan's hand...just a really freaking nice dude.

I love Ronnie. It could be Rainbow Dio, Sabbath Dio, Holy Diver Dio...or the hilariously hippy stuff he did with Richie Blackmore on Butterfly Ball. If elves and goblins and men on silver mountains aren't your thing, I understand that...but come on, that VOICE? He can't be anything but classic. (excepting the synth-era Dio which I really try not to think too much about)

and I'm 100% bummed about the stomach cancer news. that really, really sucks.

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 30 November 2009 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

I've seen Dio three times...once as a headliner at MSG in '86 or so, once supporting Iron Maiden at MSG 20 years later, and again a year or two ago on the Judas Priest/Heaven & Hell/Motörhead/Testament tour. The Heaven & Hell album is in my Top Ten of '09. And I got to interview him earlier this year (feature links here and here). Terrifically nice guy.
