I Just Found A Great Arthur Russell Interview

while over here at my mom's, digging through an old chest I had in the basement full of crap I haven't looked at in over 10 years. It's in the April 11, 1987 issue, from the time "World Of Echo" was released (there's a great review of WOE in this same issue)-- written by Frank Owen, a two pager with a lovely photo and fairly great summation of Russell's career 'til then and words by the man himself.

Anyone ILM'ers have the means to host this somehow if I scan it? I haven't seen it online and I'm sure many people would love to read it.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 13 October 2003 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

b-b-but Cornbelt is awful

gaz (gaz), Monday, 13 October 2003 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

b-b-but Cornbelt is awful

Why do you think so, gaz? It's not one of my favorite AR tunes, and that's mainly due to my never being able to digest that opera tenor guy's voice, but the production is some of Russell's most psychedelic. The swirling organ does it for me.

My least fave AR piece is probably the "Wax The Van" 12". And, once again, because I can't stand the lead voice in the song.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 13 October 2003 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah its the voice. and the guitar (which as i remember is a scrreechy rock thing?) it just screams "eclectic! over here! hello was (not was), hello material". wheras his other stuff is so subtle

gaz (gaz), Monday, 13 October 2003 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm (scratches chin). I see what you're getting at...it *is* the most "rock" of all his productions. Even though I've seen it work magic during a 3 am house set once --- just made people flip.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 13 October 2003 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't like the vocal on is it all over my face either

gaz (gaz), Monday, 13 October 2003 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah Ha! But that song would never work with a "good" vocalist. The personality in that song is about 90 % in the woman who sings it.

I've never heard the version with a male vocal, btw.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 13 October 2003 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yer right!

theres a male vers?????

gaz (gaz), Monday, 13 October 2003 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit, "Tell You Today" isn't going to be on Soul Jazz's comp? Damn, that's my favorite tune of his.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 13 October 2003 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The male vocal of "all over my face is actually aiight. If the female one didn't exist people would play it, but its definitely inferior. I do like the unreleased version on the Loft comp alot too though...

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 13 October 2003 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

hooray - this is def my most looked forward to album for a while! Do you think that the Soul Jazz people took the project over from Nuphonic?

Robin Goad (rgoad), Monday, 13 October 2003 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you think that the Soul Jazz people took the project over from Nuphonic?

Possibly, but I do remember hearing from someone that Nuphonic's project was going to be a box, including just about every 12" AR had been involved in as writer, producer or performer. Plus some unrelesed stuff. I spoke to his partner Tom not too long ago and he mentioned that Nuphonic wasn't quite "there" with what they were offering for the rights to the unreleased material. He def. wants people to hear it, but refuses to let it go to a label that won't do it justice.
Wish i had $$$. I'd put it out sight unseen.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 13 October 2003 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The male vocal version of Is It All Over My Face is SUPER hard to find, it was issued first and only issued once, and it was a 500 pressing run at that.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Monday, 13 October 2003 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

bollocks. It's on the b-side of the 12" re-release that West End put out a couple of years back. Was pretty easy to pick up in the uk...

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Huh? So now I find on SFJ's blogsite. Scroll down to the "Reissues" posting for the news. Funny (to me) that all this comes up just after I find the interview!

A DVD? Yipes!
