I've got chips down on "Isolation" being a popular choice, but I'm gonna have to say "Colony". That's the one I could do without.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 13 October 2003 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Joy Division, and I have the box set, but I don't by any means think every song on it is a gem. Honestly, I don't think I could pick just one.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 13 October 2003 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Eek! You leave 'Isolation' alone. And 'Colony', for that matter.

Could probably do without 'Komakino'. And there's a few duds off 'Still' that I can't even summon into my imagination right now.

Jason J, Monday, 13 October 2003 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Atmosphere

Ferg (Ferg), Monday, 13 October 2003 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, something Warsaw-era, I'd bet. That counts, right?

*waiting to hear someone say "Love Will Tear Us Apart"...ooh*

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 13 October 2003 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

You're No Good For Me. yuck.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 13 October 2003 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ATMOSPHERE?!?!?!?

no, no, no, no, no

seanp (seanp), Monday, 13 October 2003 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Warsaw >>>>> Joy Division (except of course for "Dead Souls", "Transmission" and "Atmosphere")

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 13 October 2003 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"Atmosphere" is wonderful!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 13 October 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't Warsaw record an entire album before they were JD? I read this somewhere once but for some reason never bothered to investigate.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 13 October 2003 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

as much as i like JD i could more easily come up with songs i can live without vs songs i think are essential. i made the mistake of knowing and adoring only the "substance" compilation for the last 15 years and so when i heard their three albums proper for the first time earlier this year i was, not to put too fine a point on it, *disappointed*.

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 13 October 2003 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

the warsaw album was recorded for RCA and was re-recorded and became Unknown Pleasures; I think they were still called Warsaw at this point and not Joy Division. It's available on bootleg pretty easily, although all the ones I've heard sound like the tape was running too fast. It's not a patch on UP of course but interesting.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 13 October 2003 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, this is much more controversial than POO.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Dead Souls" is the only song which makes me reach for the skip button, so I guess I'll pick that one. I don't think it's terrible, but I don't really ever need to hear it again.

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

((You're No Good For Me. yuck.))

Wah! That's sheer punk genius. Just because they're not sounding depressed don't mean it's crap. Also, that's a Stiff Kittens song, and Stephen Morris wernae even in the band yet, so it shouldn't count.

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps I'm in a minority, but I wouldn't consider for a second losing any of the tracks from either "Unknown Pleasures" or "Closer". Particularly "Closer" - as an *album* that is an absolute classic. Both are incredible, timeless records. If pressed, perhaps a few odds and ends from the amongst the early Warsaw material.

"Atmosphere"? You must be joking... I listened to that song the other day for the first time in ages and it knocked the stuffing out of me...

steve, Tuesday, 14 October 2003 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

So I'm gonna say it then: "Love Will Tear Us Apart". Otherwise, if well-pressed it would have to be something off 'Still'

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Atmosphere is one of the most influential songs of Joy Division.

raccord, Tuesday, 14 October 2003 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

**the warsaw album was recorded for RCA and was re-recorded and became Unknown Pleasures**

But only 2 of the songs made it onto UP.

Can't do this discard thing - sorry. Oh hang on - maybe 'You're No Good For Me' or 'Sister Ray'.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going for "Louie Louie".

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

'Novelty' - great opening but then just chugs along, with uncharacteristically banal lyrics

'Komakino' - great lyrics but musically underpowered

Meursault (Meursault), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say Komakino, or 'From Safety To Where.' I can't imagine ridding the world of a note of "Closer," that's for sure. If it had to be an album track, there might be something off Unknown Pleasures..."I Remember Nothing," maybe. But I'd so rather not...

M Specktor (M Specktor), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'd say Komakino, or 'From Safety To Where.'"

Komakino I might be able to go along with - "From Safety To Where" is a total gem!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

'From Safety To Where' is one of my favourites. And as for 'I Remember Nothing', surely this is the best song on Unknown Pleasures?

There are amazingly few dud Joy Division songs. I can listen to the entire Heart & Soul box set without skipping a track (doesn't do much for my mood though).

Meursault (Meursault), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I think I could listen to "Dead Souls", "Atmosphere" and "Transmission" on repeat for hours. (Maybe throw in "She's Lost Control" for variety.) Nothing compares to the simmering fury of "Warsaw", though. GOD I love that song!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

if there was ever a band that needed their albums remastered it is this one

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Why?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll say it, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" for sure. I've just never really been a fan of the track.

Oh wait, do the "Love Will Tear Us Apart" Permanent mixes count? Those are by far the worst things I've heard with the JD name attached to them.

Mike Salmo (salmo), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" - I thought was a huge letdown when I finally heard it - but still, a good song. .. And I wouldn't *count* versions of songs .. because it's the song itself that's in question. OK, I never said that .. well, that was the intent. So to pick lie versions, remixes, Warsaw takes, etc.. - fair enough, but really looking for inferior songwriting. Like "Colony"!

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

You jest surely, 'Colony' is probably the ebst track on Closer.
I thought the Permanent mix sounded exactly like the original. What's the difference then?
