Alan Braxe 'Rubicon' & Paradise (Braxe & Romauld) 'In Love With You'

okay okay okay how long have these been floating around??? Braxe does it again (and again) basically - the former takes a booty bass lyric ("big titty bitches/../they is the shit...") and drops it over thudding electronic kicks, in and out of 4/4 THEN comes that almighty 80s power-synth - but it's gone again just like that, a little more build up...hey it's BACK! fucking amazing, really!

the latter? well, think about it...alan braxe...'paradise'...an ascending major piano hook, ooohing aaahing male chorus, essentially electro stuttering backbeat, repetetive to fuck, absolutely gorgeous

I think I read somewhere that "In Love With You" was an "intro" and I was wondering if it would be released with a 4/4 kick running through it?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 13 October 2003 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"Rubicon" is brand new (only on promo, if I'm not mistaken? Haven't heard it yet), "In Love With You" is a few months old (and indeed, fantastic). The big wait, however, is for the release of Bangalter & Falcon "Call On Me".

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 13 October 2003 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

can upload

Be a dear. Please do. ;)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 13 October 2003 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I like In Love With You, but I'm a bit sick of it now. Dying to hear Rubicon mind you.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a really crappy encode of Rubicon, it sounds like it's part of a mix or something (?), so a nicer version would be much appreciated...

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh i think i have the same one nathan, BEHOLD

and here's the Paradise track - Spencer appears to be correct in that it's more a prelude than a full complete track, that may explain Ronan's shockah sickness too.

people need to tell me whenever there's a new Braxe thing out OKAY? thank you!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"Rubicon" was released two weeks ago, apparently - a quick search reveals lots of online vinyl distros that carry it. On Vulture, VULT003.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve have you heard the Braxe/Diamond remix of Alarm Clock by Bjork?

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh Ronan i've heard most of his remixes including Daddy's Favaourite and of course Britney Spears. the man is a disco god. but what's Fred Falke up to?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't stop listening to 'Rubicon' - it makes me so happy. Are you feeling it already?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve-Rubicon!

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 2 November 2003 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks a lot for supporting us!

fred falke, Monday, 10 November 2003 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 10 November 2003 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

?!?

typo acapulco (gcannon), Monday, 10 November 2003 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Fred, you're welcome, the 'Running' 12" is still in my record bag. Pleased to hear Rubicon has a UK release (it's been a rumour for a long time), and you guys should come to London, play some more shows.

nick.K (nick.K), Monday, 10 November 2003 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

*resists giddy fanboy urges*

but where does the vocal sample on 'Rubicon' come from?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 10 November 2003 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

also if Fred is still reading i apologise for consistently not crediting him where it is clearly due. that's what happens when your name goes second i guess :(

stevem (blueski), Monday, 10 November 2003 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow! :) :) :)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 November 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the best thing ever, Fred keep up the good work. Also if you are still reading have you ever played Bangalter's "I Don't Know" of Traxx on Da Roxx over Love Lost? It's a perfect fit!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 10 November 2003 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

actually the track is called "what to do" I think, on the first Traxx on Da Rocks (not roxx)

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 10 November 2003 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
i now have 'Arena' and 'Crystal City' and am back on slsk :)

but - oh no! - what's happened to the booty bass lyrics on the original 'Rubicon'? they've gone on the official release, a sample clearance issue? it's a shame as i think the interplay of the vocal hook gave the track that extra edge and without them it's not quite the same

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

no dude. i think (didn't we talk about this?) that was a dj deeon track that was running under 'rubicon'. like, i think the mp3 must have been ripped from a dj mix.

stevem what's your slsk name? i'm on under my name, you should get daft punk's 97 essential mix from me if you don't already have it. it's got tons of great chicago ghetto-house tracks (deeon, hyperactive, parris mitchell, waxmaster) and lots of early motorbass/cassius-styled stuff too.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 28 December 2003 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

ghetto-house, the forgotten genre.

Jacob (Jacob), Sunday, 28 December 2003 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

well i don't know vahid i found two separate, different mp3s of 'rubicon' - both crap quality but both had the dj deeon bits - only one had the 'in the studio' dj commentary over bits of it - so i was convinced the deeon bits were part of the track and not mixed in (they seemed too well mixed in to be mixed in, if you know what i mean). i really hope they are as it's not the same without them.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

can't wait to get a proper version of this

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 28 December 2003 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

how the hell do they do it? just got the full version of Rubicon and it is totally ace, swirling images of nights out and beers and excess just condensed into this shiny metal house track. Possibly tops Love Lost even, brilliant.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 January 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

!!!!!! This is fucking great, right back to the drawing board on the best tracks of 03 piece.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Saturday, 3 January 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

jeezus thats ronan, gareth and now tico all cottoning on - where were you lost 2 months ago?!

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 3 January 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't like the scratchy mixed version as much!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 3 January 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

No I liked it but I just couldn't quite get into it as fully as this nice clean version.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 3 January 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

it is incredibly like Daft Punk isn't it? in the best possible way.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 3 January 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh it's quite 'Superheroes' but better than that i think. i'm trying to get a decent version of DJ Deeon's 'Let Me Bang' to see if i can create a better quality fusion of those two tracks. it was just a bootleg all along, but i don't know who did it.

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 3 January 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i have the deeon track, and a bunch of other dance mania deeon stuff, but sadly not the track that, er, someone played once that was really good and kind of sounded like robert armani. anyway, i'll send you the deeon track steve

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 3 January 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone know who the director is to the "Rubicon" video?

måns, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

were you sent here by the devil or IS THERE REALLY A RUBICON VIDEO? i hope it is much like the vision Tom conjures on NYLPM as this fits with what i had in mind also.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

the video is me, stumbling around drunk with a robot helmet on. it was directed by gondry. it zooms in on my legs and my entire body is made from records.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

no you're a 'rub icon'

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

did you upload this eventually, stevem?

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

oh stupid, sorry, just read upthread.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, there is a video. It´s about a girl taking a driving lesson. A clip was shown on the french MTV.

måns, Thursday, 8 January 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey I have a question: that vocal sample on "Call on me" is Eddie Money, right?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 8 January 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Or is it Steve Winwood? I'm totally guessing, but I'd like to hear the song...

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 8 January 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, it was Winwood apparently, "Valerie", as I'm sure any fule but me kno.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 8 January 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

måns thanks for letting me know. of course it just had to involve driving! i must see it but i don't know how i will.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 January 2004 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

A clip from the video can be found in the forum section at http://www.daftcrew.fr.st/

The earlier crappy-sound Rubicon with Dj Deeon vocals was from a Cassius dj set I think.

And if youre a really huge fan of everything that has to do with braxe/falke you could pick up an album called "Loop In Release" with amongst others, fred falke showing off his jazz-bass skills

måns, Thursday, 8 January 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish i knew about that site before now, it's fantastic - lots of great info (which tracks were sampled on all the classics etc.) and the forum looks cool. thanks a lot måns

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 January 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i am so happy that we're talking about dj deeon on ilm!

vahid (vahid), Monday, 12 January 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

theres still this great deeon track on ilm that was in a robert armani style, i think its from around 95/96, claude young played it out, and, er, someone else. cant find it though, dont know the name...

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i've redone the cassius bootleg version but the mp3 of 'let me bang' is still very poor - such distortion on the booming bass. will upload soon anyway - sounds much better than the original radio rip at least.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

the version with the vocals from Debo - Let Me Bang on top is indeed taken from a cassius fm set, falcon was mixing

does anyone know where i can find the full video for Rubicon?

jk84, Tuesday, 13 January 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd love to hear your remake of rubicon vs let me bang. please let us know when it's upped! :)

peakform, Sunday, 18 January 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i totally do not get the jizzing over this track.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 18 January 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps you need to hold back on jizzing in general for a few days

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 January 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i knew this was going to be trouble

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 18 January 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

before we go any further, i should say that i DO like it, i am just somewhat stymied by it's reputation, and am a bit exhausted with the "endless conveyor belt" (c. charlton lido) nature of french house re. sifting the good from the bad

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 18 January 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it's much better than 'love lost' but that's just preference really - though there seems to be more going on in this one, i mean the electric guitar at the end - it's structured more like a 'pop' song than anything else they've done (may explain why it has a video). Tom nailed it with the driving into Paris by night on an empty road but for me it also conjures effortlessly images of 80s video games, flying anime disco robots and the like - perhaps more than any other modern (but retroist) French dance track.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 18 January 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

the re-edit is here for those who covet it

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 January 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i think this track is overrated, too. until i get to 2:15 (in stevem's version) and then it's the best track ever. well, except for the first track on "au reve" (hi water?), which seems to mine similar territory in a different way. nice work on the re-edit!!

more jizzing over dj deeon, please.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 19 January 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(and i hope he doesn't google that)

vahid (vahid), Monday, 19 January 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

It's wicked. You will jizz one day, jess, you will.

East Bay Crackhaus (nordicskilla), Monday, 19 January 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

'Hi Water' is barely listenable! I do LOVE half of that Cassius album tho - cheers anyway vahid

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 January 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

genius! stevem, you're the man. full merit on the re-edit.

peakform, Monday, 19 January 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

*finally listens to 'Rubicon'* Heh, very entertaining. TV show theme song rather than a movie one, tho.

what's horizon or what's this stuff?

my new rubicon is ALOUD-SEX AND SUN (ROMAIN TRANCHART REMIX)

air guitar plus sentimental braxe style outro. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Tico played 'Rubicon' tonight at Club FT during the dying minutes of Dick Adovcaat's last flight of fancy. it was appreciated.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 22:21 (twenty years ago)

can't find info on horizon anywhere. id3 tag says it's from the rubicon dvd. could be a fake, i suppose, but it really really does sound like them. only 1:30 long..

ooh i'll have to check out that aloud track

fizzcaraldo (Justin M), Thursday, 1 July 2004 00:02 (twenty years ago)

this has got to be legit, it's too fuckin good

fizzcaraldo (Justin M), Thursday, 1 July 2004 07:44 (twenty years ago)

searching now!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 July 2004 16:53 (twenty years ago)

holy shit! i only have a 1 minute 30 second sample. but wow!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 1 July 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
Here's the Rubicon video. It's very San Fernando valley in the 80s - reminds me of my own driving test in Van Nuys. Like the video for M83 "Don't Save Us From the Flames", it features notable LA hipsters (in this case the drummer and bassist from The Like). A guy from Phantom Planet is in both! Must be the same director...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 29 July 2005 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

i was in this park when i was in madrid and there was this little area around a pond where lots of families were sitting. there were all these guys in animal outfits, evenly spaced out on the gravel (about ten feet apart), and they were all holding up balloon animals which i guess they were offering to make/sell to the kids. i was listening to rubicon on my headphones as i walked through this strange little display and that is when i really started to love that track.
