doglatin, Tuesday, 14 October 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

2) a better version (with book, limited edition)
3) Cheap and rare
4) didn't have the other albums(cds)
5) Looked nice, more money than sense

8) More rare tracks
9) Well, I resisted for around a year....

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine would be Frank Black's "Teenager of the Year."

1. 2xLP - bought when it came out.
2. Japanese import CD (with b-sides cd)
3. Sealed LP (when the other wears out)
4. Test pressing LP (geeking out)

Why? I keep coming back and this record never lets me down.

gusbot (eternal_fields), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Aftermath - Rolling Stones (which isn't my favorite stones record by any means and I rarely listen to)

1) Cheap vinyl
2) Used CD
3) Another used Cd because my CDs are so numerous and unorganized that I sometimes forget I own stuff
4) The new reissue CD version of the Stones stuff, which I am trying to buy most of.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it's astral weeks, and i'm almost embarrassed to admit the reason: i travel a lot, and i have a terrible fear of flying. for some reason, i got the idea that astral weeks has a talismanic power that will keep my plane from crashing/blowing up/whatever. whenever there's severe turbulence or something otherwise weird happening, i have to listen to it so that the plane can right itself. because of this bizarre delusion, i have mutliple copies in various bags so that i'm never stuck without one. i am a total lunatic, i know.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse

1) original Candlelight version (CANDLE008), bought within a week of release (massive hype + 18 month delay = huge frustration)
2) 1998 remastered version (with those two terrible covers tacked on)
3) another original in a 20 disc ebay bulk purchase two years ago

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i am a total lunatic, i know.

Don't be so hard on yourself! If you're right then you've saved the lives of thousands of people. OK, actually one plane's worth, unless you ended up being a miraculous survivor.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I have four copies of _The Great Milenko_ because the covers were in different colors (also one copy has two extra songs).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bad Brains song "Pay to Cum," which I own on two copies of the old hardcore comp Let Them Eat Jellybeans and on seven-inch. I got the first Jellybeans (on red vinyl) cause I wanted it; the second in case something happened to it, thereby depriving me of one of my favorite pieces of music ever (it was then way OOP and unavailable elsewhere); and the single was a gift from Kevin from the Fuses.

Lee G (Lee G), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Throbbing Gristle - 2nd Annual Report

1. Fetish records 'backwards version'
2. Celluloid records 'bootleg version' with white cover
3. Fetish records repress - purchased at record fair purely cus the previous owner stashed a couple of nude pix of cosey from some cheezy 70's porn mag inside the sleeve.
4. 5 albums Box Set Version
5. CD Version

No original first press version :-(

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait -- do you all still own all these, or do you get rid of them when you buy new ones.

I have two copies of a couples things, an LP and a CD, but that's it. I think I can fairly say I've re-bought my last record.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

you know, i've never thought of 'astral weeks' as saving the whole planeload of passengers vs. miraculously saving only me. i am now envisioning myself borne to safety on the gigantic, benevolent right hand of van morrison as chaos erupts around me.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

cool.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

OMD - Junk Culture:

1. ordered from online
2. bought cheap record of it before my cd came in
3. bought cheap cd of it before my cd came in.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, shine on your crazy juggalo! What ever happened to ICP bringing about the end of the world with the last joker card??

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

oops shine on YOU crazy juggalo.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine would be Loveless by MBV. I think it is so good that I lend it to people and I never get it back. I totally am a Loveless evangelist, I have pushed that record on so many people.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

when the remaster comes out i will have 3 copies of fleetwood mac's self-titled album

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

at any one time, i usually have 3 or 4 copies of 'another thought' by arthur russell. i need to have two for myself (in case one gets messed up) and i am always seeing it in 99 cent auctions on ebay and feel compelled to buy it and pass it on to someone who will might give it love and a good home.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Straitjacket Fits - Hail
1) US CD
2) NZ LP (4 songs not on the US CD)
3) US LP (just for completism)
4) US CD (wrongly described on eBay as being the NZ CD)
5) NZ CD (ALL the songs, yay)

Poppy (poppy), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

In 1992, I went to a thrift store that had a box of 40 copies of the Chills' "Submarine Bells" for 25 cents apiece, bought them all, and gave them away to people for a long time...

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, Douglas. Wish I knew you. I already owned a copy then, but I wouldn't have minded being given a free one.

johnny fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Item: "Live In A Dream" / "Chaos In USSR" by Sub-@ctive (Flexi Disc given away free with Issue 12 of Grinding Halt fanzine, Grinding Halt Records , Cat.: GH001, 1981).

Quantity: At least 50 of the little bastards.

Reason: I was the vocalist with the band and co-producer of the fanzine and ultimately we couldn't even give all 2,500 of the fuckin' 'orrible things away!

In second place:

Item: "New Rose" by The Damned

Quantity: (off the top of my head)
1 x original single (scratched and worn to a frazzle)
1 x replacement for original single
1 x (French?) import
1 x copy from box set of 1st 10 Stiff Records singles
1 x reissue in white vinyl
1 x reissue on *red* vinyl
1 x reissue with bonus single ("I'm So Bored")
1 x reissue on 12" with Neat Neat Neat

Of course this doesn't include the number of times I have the song on the original album (2 vinyl copies, 1 CD), on Peel / radio session EP's, albums and CD's, Damned compilations, Damned live albums and bootlegs and videos (and now a DVD!), other punk compilations etc. etc.

Reason: apart from being a great song, it changed my life.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

haha! excellent Douglas! i really like that gesture. naturally, all your friends now adore that album.

willem (willem), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Stupidest multiple record purchase - 3 copies of Thin Lizzy "Johnny the fox" album to try and beat juggle with, but without the requisite skills to actually acheive...

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Stewart: That'll be the French import on Skydog, with the labels on the wrong sides...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I own 4 copies of Kid A. Seeing as I had the standard CD and the limited edition CD/book, and I was given a copy of the album on vinyl, I've elected to buy it in every format possible, because circumstances were pushing me that way anyway, so there's only MiniDisc and the promo CD left to go.

Damian (Damian), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The standard CD has the book already, secreted behind the black CD holder thingy (you have to dismantle the CD box to get it...)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The only record which fit this category I can think of is the King Biscuit Time mini-album
1) Bought a 5-songs (or so) version
2) Found a "full" version with something like 8 songs
3) Found another "full" version with tracks in a different order (starting with "I walk the Earth")

Yes I was quite into the Beta Band at this time...

Olivier (anagrama), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Pet Shop Boys Introspective seems to fit the bill -

- had taped copy off a friend
- bought cassette copy which later lost its box and broke
- bought cheap vinyl for 20p in MVE
- bought used CD of Behaviour and discovered it had "Introspective" inside. Decided to honour mistake as a hidden intention.
- (yesterday) found the 2CD reissue cheap and since I've really enjoyed i) the bonus discs and ii) the re-mastering on the other PSB reissues I decided to pick it up.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, shine on you crazy juggalo! What ever happened to ICP bringing about the end of the world with the last joker card??

I think the "end-of-the-world" thing went out the window the instant they chucked out Mike E. Clark and started chasing rap-rock trends instead of making gooney carnival music. They went from bringing about the end of the world to BEING the end of the world.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn....I followed ICP through a friend at work who has now moved (he even bought the comics that had CD singles in them)...But I remember after the last album came out he called me pissed saying that there was something at the end saying they were really secretly a Christian rap band or something. He seemed to feel very cheated....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

But I remember after the last album came out he called me pissed saying that there was something at the end saying they were really secretly a Christian rap band or something.

HAHA Matt with one innocent sentence you have reignited my ICP interest all over again!!!!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The best-of Sparks comp I got in San Francisco was mastered TERRIBLY on thin vinyl so I got a 12" version of Beat the Clock - and it was still mastered terribly! So then I got a different 12" copy of BtC and it was mastered perfectly but there was a huge scratch right when the bass really kicks in, so I still actually need another copy.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan,

Go with God.

Shaggy 2 Dope

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I knew a guy who bought a copy of Don Rickles, Hello, Dummy! every time it came into the record store he worked at.

hstencil, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

mark - I mean the version of Kid A that was packaged in the style of a children's book, with completely different artwork. I do have the CD with the booklet under the tray as well (subsequent pressings of Kid A do not include this booklet).

Damian (Damian), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i went to an installation by Violet Faigan last year (she's some relation of doorag's i believe).
anyway, it depicted a sandy heap desert island with an umbrella and a chair, but there were also all these funky consumable lounge ornaments on the island, and they were all made out of "Pal Joey" lps.

george gosset (gegoss), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to have seven copies of idris muhammad - power of soul. but i think i have sold two on ebay now. and i may have given one or two away. why? the record had special significance to me because it was the first record we got into sampling, so i would buy them whenever i saw them because i couldn't stand for them to be all lonely in the record stores.

i also have 3 copies of maiden voyage, 2lps and 1 cd

i had 1 box each of two versions of digable planets 9th wonder, which i have been slowly selling off in sets of 4. why? they were in a dumpster

there are other threads about this

ron (ron), Thursday, 16 October 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

seven years pass...

ah, how about Psychocandy?

1) Original vinyl
2) Cassette edition, on holiday for the hire car
3) CD with extra track
4) Freebie version with The Times, without extra track I think (never liked SCT enough)
5) Another version on CD bought as a cheap ebay auction along with Darklands CD which I didn't have at the time.
6) Soon come - the deluxe edition with extra Cd and a DVD too.

Didn't get: the 'remastered' version as the USA version was a dualdisk with videos and I thought it was a swizz the UK didn't get the same. Also, a nice "Original albums" little box with five CDs in, mainly because I had all five already and it wasn't cheap enough.

Those "five" CD boxes are nice, I have Lou Reed, Patti Smith and Henry Mancini versions..

Mark G, Thursday, 25 August 2011 08:49 (fourteen years ago)

I have two copies of some Sunburned Hand of the Man LP because I forgot I had already bought it so I bought another copy

Baden Powell: Canto on Guitar

1) Got it as a used vinyl, fell in love with it.
2) Wanted to have a better quality version of it, so bought a CD version.
3) Noted that Canto, alongside 3 other Baden Powell albums, had been remastered and collected as a 2CD compilation. Bought it because of the other 3 albums. However, I gave the earlier CD to my gf, so I still only have two copies of the album.

Tuomas, Thursday, 25 August 2011 11:55 (fourteen years ago)

i have 8 copies of both the orig broadway cast of "jacques brel is alive and well and living in paris" and "everything you ever wanted to hear on the moog *but were afraid to ask" because both of them were uber formative records for me when i was idk 6 or so (explains a lot really) and i have some weird paranoia about never ever finding them again, so i buy them every time i see them.

dougie instructor (jjjusten), Thursday, 25 August 2011 15:16 (fourteen years ago)

Love "Jacques Brel is Alive..." but wau. Thats's a bigass box/lotta shelf space.
