Do You Remember Lo-Fi?

adaml (adaml), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"Secret Knowledge of Backroads" was later a Pavement b-side, was it not?

adaml (adaml), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

silver jews are a constant for me, a band that i still frequently listen to no matter how divergent from my current tastes they are.
regarding "secret knowledge," i think you're right.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

it was a john peel session.

search also: sebadoh "wasted pieces" cassette on shrimper (recently given the reissue treatment).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there any plans to put this back in print? I'm a huge S.Jews fan, but I've never heard this... word is, it's very different than the stuff I know. True?

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

On my copy of the Arizona Record CD, the back cover is actually glued onto the inlay card from some random early-'90s pop CD. And yellowing tape is used on the front cover card, to secure some of the graphic elements. I don't know if all the copies are like this, but it's great.

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine's not like that!

adaml (adaml), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Where'd you get it, Sam? I have seen it on eBay, but it seems to go for a hefty chunk of change, and I kept figuring they would get around to reissuing it somewhere down the road.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve Keene, classic or dud?

I have a nice piece of Keene art I bought offa Rough Trade.

adaml (adaml), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I got my "Arizona Record" when it came out. I bought it in Rhythm Records, Camden, London, UK.

adaml (adaml), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I am sitting on a couch in my living room. The most prominent piece of art is a painting of James K. Polk by Steve Keene.

Upstairs, in my bedroom, my copy of The Arizona Record sits patiently at the front of a stack of LPs, beneath my stereo.

The poster insert remains stuck to the wall of a room in my parents' house that used to be my bedroom.

hstencil, Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't get a poster insert either. Does Berman hate Europeans or something?

adaml (adaml), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I got the CD from a used bin, back in college.

Supposedly (there was a thread about this awhile back), Drag City is reissuing it along with tracks from the Silver Jews "demos" tape, which is one of my favorite things ever! (A few of the tracks made it onto the Arizona Record and the Dime Map of the Reef 7".)

(x-post)

I have the poster insert from "The Natural Bridge" up in my bedroom now... along with a panopoly of Neil Hagerty/Red Krayola-related posters. My room has become a Drag City shrine, though I didn't do it on purpose!

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for that. Since you are the go-to Drag City guy, any word on a new Silv. Jewz record? I have been buying The Believer just to read Berman's poems, since they're almost always incredibly entertaining/funny/devastatingly sad/incisive.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

word on the street, er bulletin board, is that Berman has been recording with Steve West of Pavement fame.

hstencil, Tuesday, 14 October 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the last time i saw hstencil...

</joni mitchell>

i had the opportunity to talk to d@n k0r3tsky and he mentioned the silver jews comp would be the first 2 EPs plus "bonus material". i specifically asked if it would be the trillion story walk up era "demos" and he replied no.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Nuts.

Someday my beloved demos cassette tape will wear out, and I'll be very sad!

Sam J. (samjeff), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah gygax!, now I remember. Gee, those were some heady days back then in the summer of my youth.

hstencil, Tuesday, 14 October 2003 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Drag City's website has mentioned a forthcoming "archival" release of Silver Jews material. I for one have gone ahead and assumed this means re-releasing the Arizona Record, along with Dime Map of the Reef, and the Trillion Story Walkup.

And according to sources from Rising Shotgun posted recently on the SJBB (woot), Berman has recently begun recording demos for the follow-up to Bright Flight.

eight years pass...

Only took six years, but I finally got this framed and mounted. It's one of several Steve Keene paintings that DCB acquired for the Arizona Record cover but ultimately rejected. There was a time in 2004 that it really paid to be a fan amongst the man on his unofficial message board, cause he mailed several different ones out to myself and a few other lucky early-responders to his offer there. The ironic thing is that when I originally received it I was framing paintings part-time, but because I slept on it, this particular job was one I had to pay someone else to do.

The ticket that the Michaels frame department clerk wrote up had the piece described as "Man on Horse."

I've never heard these before and they are crazy lo-fi! They're amusingly billed as remastered though.

only NWOFHM! is real (krakow), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:02 (thirteen years ago)

ha yeah, they are definitely just straight to boombox things. some great stuff though.

tylerw, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:17 (thirteen years ago)

I remember downloading "Dime Map of the Reef" off audiogalaxy back in the day, then spending two consecutive nights furiously searching for a "cleaner version". lol @ me

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:19 (thirteen years ago)

now that i think of it, it might not even be as hi-fi as a boombox. isn't some of this recorded on an answering machine?

tylerw, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:22 (thirteen years ago)

The answering machine idea is mentioned in the press release, though not specifically in terms of these recordings. I could easily believe it though.

only NWOFHM! is real (krakow), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, i might just be remembering bob nastanovich claiming they'd call up thurston moore's answering machine and play a whole album into it. does thurston still have the tapes!?

tylerw, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:27 (thirteen years ago)

I'm warming to it on a second listen. First time round it was hard to get past the complete lack of fidelity. Is it crazy that it brings Jandek to mind for me at points?

Or the Frogs, but without the endless toilet humour.
