sleeping with headphones on.

First, how many of you listen to music right before you go to sleep?
And, do you take of your headphones before you fall asleep?
How often do you wake up in the middle of the night to remove your headphones?
And, how often do you not remove them until you wake up in the morning?

For me, somehing feels out of the ordinary when I try to sleep without listening to music first. Lately I fall asleep with the music playing and only remove the headphones in the middle of the night (with no recollection of it) occasionally I wake up with them still on.

I set the speakers up on either side of my bed and set the sleep timer so that the stereo will turn off after a few hours. I sometimes sleep with headphones when I'm in different settings (hotels, guest at someone's home, etc.); for these occasions I use those put-in-ears style itty bitty ones. I usually wake up in the middle of the night and pull them out though, yes.

I often do.

And, do you take of your headphones before you fall asleep?

While most of my music listening is done using headphones, I never use headphones before I go to sleep.

I did that a couple times when growing up though, and sometimes I kept them on when I fell asleep.

I have sporadic phases. The CD player in my bedroom whirrs noticanly at low volumes, so either the radio or headphones are called for. I've lost track of the amount of times I've woken up in the middle of the night with them still on, or, worse, half-on half-off, which inspires panic lest I've broken them in my sleep. It's fun putting on an album I know has something weird to wake me up in it's latter stages; the penultimate track on Four Tet's debut starts with about 2 minutes of white noise and intense drums which must've caused me to almost cry with confusion on about half a dozen occasions, brilliant.

i used to do this but i don't have a cd player except on my computer at the moment...
i always vaguely worry that i will be strangled in my sleep after rolling over and twisting the cord around my neck...

I've always fallen asleep to music, but I've only recently had to listen on headphones due to livng conditions. I usually listen to one song and then say fuck it because it's so uncomfortable (i have large headphones you see). When I fall asleep with them on it hurts my heads, but I do it often anyway.

Also I'm afraid of being strangled.

I used to have a set-up like nickalicious - speakers on either side of my bed - but in my current flat, even low volumes are too loud and my speakers are too far away, so I've recently started using headphones again (big sennheisers). It's such a nice experience, and makes me appreciate the music a lot more, but yeah, i always seem to fall asleep quickly and wake up at some unknown time to pull them off, turn off the stereo (the display is really bright), and drift back off to saw some logs...

I've been doing this more and more frequently as of recent. It's like a conscious dream state. If it's a CD I know, I either pass out until the next morning or wake up right around the final track, then duly proceed to turn off the discman and put the headphones aside in the darkness of my half-asleep stupor. I used them as a sleeping aid while in Mexico, where my roommates wouldn't let me be being generally loud in the living room. Now it's become a hardcore habit.

I do it a lot, I usually fall asleep after 10-20 minutes and wake up approx. four or five songs after that, then I take the headphones off, turn the discman off and fall asleep again. When I'm in bed I just can't help falling asleep to the music, even when I feel awake and just plan to listen to the CD. Sometimes I'll go to sleep unintentionally even if the lights are on / it's the middle of the day / the music's thru speakers instead of headphones, but bedtime + headphones + music = guaranteed quick unconsciousness.

don't fall asleep with "Bayreuth Return" on loud!

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I find that when I fall asleep listening to music on I'll wake up an hour or so later and feel really strange and disoriented. It's quite a peaceful and relaxing feeling, though.

I've got some big cushiony sony headphones that are fairly compfortable, but only if my head is pointing up, or just a bit to the side. Also isn't it neat that if you know a song well enough you can pinpoint exactly when you fell asleep based on the last part of the song you remember hearing?

I once fell asleep with Pet Sounds on my headphones. I heard most of the album while half asleep, and it was very very beautiful. I had just bought it a few days earlier, so that helped.
