album wise compared to other years?? what have you liked this year?

I think this is one of the most "fun" years I can remember
junior senior, the new basement jaxx, the darkness, and fannypack have all been moving me

otherwise, except for a few albums (coloma, my morning jacket, hidden cameras) it's been a pretty weak year

Scott McIntyre (some best friend), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

enjoying it very much, a 50/50 mixture of discovering old stuff for the first time and hearing fresh new shit and believing it to the proverbial bombazal

particularly liking albums by - outkast, jaxx, broadcast, dizzee, richard x, soft pink truth, audio bullys, white stripes, tok tok v soffy o (last year tho i guess?), goldfrapp, the ratpure, junior senior, zongamin, radiohead, four tet, matthew herbert, manitoba, black box recorder, the strokes, u-ziq, lfo, massive attack, british sea power...

pretty good on the singles front too - but can't be arsed to name any (yet)

overall: B+

So-so. Plenty of stuff to like, but not much to love.

Ben Dot (1977), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Hip-hop fans know to wait until the very end of a year. There's new Missy, Jay-Z, Method Man, Timbaland, Clipse coming up...

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i've hardly heard any albums from this year
the dizzee one is the only one i can think of off hand

robin (robin), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I've enjoyed this year a lot, and there are more potentially great albums on the horizon. Whereas 2002 was super-strong on songs and weak on albums I think it's a more even balance this year.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 14 October 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

My year-end album list currently stands at about 50 albums, singles roughly the same. This has been a fantastic year--better than last.

Quite good year so far, in my opinion. Much really good albums, a few excellent like the Wrens one, Broken Social Scene (well it's 2002, but got released again this year), Sunburned Hand of the Man...
However, I reallyl miss a rock album that could top last year's Hot Snakes.

Olivier (anagrama), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I've enjoyed it a lot - Tim's right, more terrific long-players than last year - but I'm less passionate about it, happier just to sit and lap it up as it's brought to me like a big fat cat. Writing a huge great long thing about my favourite '02 tracks seemed a totally right and natural thing to be doing - this year it would seem like a big hassle even though the quality hasn't dropped for me.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

On a personal level it has of course been (or turned out to be) one of the best years of my life. Musically I found enough records which spoke to me, enough to fill up a Naked Maja Top 50 best-of list at Xmas I do not doubt. Although narrowing it down to 10 for Uncut and also for V Voice Pazz & Jop (in which I will be making my maiden appearance this year) is proving problematic...objectively I suppose 2003 will go down as having been an average year for music; no big new trends or continental shifts in tastes/approaches. But there's more than enough around to keep me interested.

Aloud, Holly V, Dickie X, Rach X-Club, tATu, Minogue junior and senior, Junior Senior, Madonna, Lumidee, OutKast, Sugababes, Britney... It's a bumper year for pop, I'll tell you that.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Tons of great out-jazz reissues (and some new releases, too), a mini-tsunami of killer metal, unexpectedly strong discs from veterans (Iron Maiden, Killing Joke)...2003's been great.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

It's taken me nine months to compile ten records.
I give it an eh minus.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

There are so many great albums out this year that have the fun factor on maximum overdrive that sometimes I forget about some of the great fun-less albums (Hail to the Thief, Sumday, Quebec) of '03 when compiling Da List.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay I lust realized calling Quebec "fun-less" is kinda off-base, but as compared to all other Ween albums ever it is kinda bleak. Which is kinda why I love it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

a couple months ago i would've talked about tom-esque contentedness, but then i got real passionate about dancehall, my 03 mix is currently my favourite release this year. 'lucky star' and 'like glue' meant more to me than just about any recent pop singles. i think i've just about overplayed 'room on fire', but i'm having more fun as an indie tokenist than i had as an indie fan. had high hopes for the skwatta kamp album and local hiphop in general, am somewhat disappointed so far. i turned someone onto dizzee - gave me the chance to hear a record i already liked through new, even more enthusiatic ears, that was good. after downloading the villabos mix, i fear i'm tiring of that kind of microstuff, the raumschmiere is helping, though. bought and loved lots of old, good stuff. many unassumingly wonderful new things that i'll like even more when i stumble across them while browsing through my mp3s halfway through next year, like for instance the sugababes's 'situations heavy'.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"just about any *other* recent pop singles", i should've said. or i should've just rephrased the whole thing, it sounds like i'm saying those songs aren't pop singles. bedtime.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Outside the mainstream, as heard in the way too R&B dominated singles lists, 2003 seems like a nice year so far. I just wished bands like Super Furry Animals and Grandaddy would trade places with acts such as Nelly and Beyonce as far as mainstream popularity goes.
