sorry if this has been covered before, can't find it of so. i'm going to finally get a dvd playa i think (god they're real cheap these days aren't they ?)and whereas i have a wish list (like a saddo) of about 25 movies i *must* get within the first few months of having the thing, i don't have the same going on for music-y ones. obviously there's the fabs' anthology, stop making sense, best of bowie, etc etc that you just *have* to have, but what else looks essential on the tuuuuuuuunes front dvd-wise ?

is there a 2-disc 'sign o the times' in the pipeline that i should know about ? an amazing disc of extraas on 'depeche mode 101' ?
an hilarious commentary from peter buck on 'rem: tour film' ?

tell all y'all. i dont mind which bands/kind of music either, as i find that music documentaries/movies are good way to discover new bands.

In Fopp recently, there was quite a good compilation DVD for £2 or £3, "World shhut your mouth", with Jam, Style council, Teardrops, J.Cope, Zodiac Mindwarp, Propaganda, Dickies, etc...

Me kids (5 and 3) love it, spesh the Zodiac Mindwarp...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Still no plans for 'sign o the times' to be released on DVD, theres a dodgy Brazilian bootlegged copy that you should avoid getting, plays worse than a VHS copy. The new Prince DVD is horrible as well, I'd avoid that. I've seen friend's home made DVDs that sound/look nicer!

If you like Bjork, the 'Live at the Royal Opera House' is fantastic, all the Matmos beeps and blips spinning round in gorgeous 5.1! By far my favourite music DVD.

Others I have and like...the Fugazi DVD, don't find myself coming back to it, but if i'm in a 'Fuck the System' mood its all good.

The Pavement DVD is nice, good value for money, 2 concerts, all the videos and a big documentary.

Want to get the 'Mesh' DVD with stuff from the Anticon/cLOUDDED people, just to see what they're like live, anyone seen it?

TomB (TomB), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

That's actually Mush Records, and I own that one: it's from their '02 tour with Boom Bip and Doseone doing tracks from Circle, cLOUDDEAD, Radioinactive, and Reaching Quiet (Why? and Odd Nosdam). It's a good hour and a half, and I'd recommend it highly just for the Circle tracks.

I'll check out that Bjork disc, that sounds great! I'm curious about the new Live Box that she released, that includes her Debut-era appearance on MTV Unplugged - I've heard that's really cool.

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Might be a bit much for the casual fan, but the Cure's 'Trilogy' 2-DVD set is pretty class.

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I know the first music-type DVD i'll get will be Portishead -- NYC - Live at Roseland.

christoff (christoff), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Search for God's sake:

Scratch. You'll never EVER look at turntabling again the same way after seeing this. It's fun, funny, invigorating, inspiring, and just an astounding musical documentary. Very good stuff. Some of the main playas: Afrika Bambata, Rob Swift, Q-Bert, Mix Master Mike, Babu, Z-Trip, many many more.

Genghis Blues. Blind American blues musician teaches himself Tuvan throat singing, travels to Tuva, performs in a competition, the cinematography is mind-numbingly brilliant, the music is gorgeous, the movie has laughs and drama and surprises. Main playas: Paul Pena, Kongar Ol' Ondar.

I also highly recommend the Portishead, Cure, and Bjork live discs mentioned above. Especially that Bjork one.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Scratch seconded.

Of course, you'll be getting the Pulp Hits DVD won't you?

David Merryweather (DavidM), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Sun Ra's Space Is The Place.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

As TomB says, the Pavement Slow Century dvd has a lot of content for its relatively low price, and it is a must for any hardcore Pavement fanboy or fangirl.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Destroy:

That new SNL compilation disc. It's got a couple good things and tons upon tons of piffle nothing shit, and leaves off some of the most awesome performers ever. I mean, for fuck's sake, Miles Davis performed SEVEN times on SNL; nowhere to be seen on this wank rot.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

what about the Fall DVD? anyone seen that yet?

seanp (seanp), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the roxy music live 2001 is so good it's ridiculous. they're extremely well-rehearsed, they look and sound great, and they still sound as radical as any pop band ever.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Underworld Live DVD, for the graphics... pure art.

BBC Later... series (Later with Jools)

daarkbee, Thursday, 16 October 2003 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, I want that Can DVD so bad. Is it out yet? Has anyone seen it?

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Thursday, 16 October 2003 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it out yet?

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 16 October 2003 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

while we're on this topic, can someone please explain to me the point of DVD audios?

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 16 October 2003 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Some I've got that feel like they're a little bit more than just a live performance or a bunch of promo videos:

The Band - The Last Dance
The Residents - Icky Flix
Super Furry Animals - Rings Around The World
Tom Waits - Big Time (if you can find it!)
Woodstock

I've also heard good things about these but I haven't got / seen them myself (yet!):

Bob Dylan – Don’t Look Back
Rolling Stones – Gimme Shelter

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 16 October 2003 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Who doesn't some label put together a "The Best Music Videos DVD.....Ever" sort of DVD. That is, a compilation of some of the most famous music videos throughout history, including such classic vidoes as "Take On Me", "Money For Nothing", "Sledgehammer", "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Paranoid Android" etc. all in one DVD?

I for certain would have bought a copy.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 16 October 2003 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Pulp's Hits DVD is indeed a thing of wonder. Check also Belle & Sebbie's Fans Only, 2 1/2 hours of cardigans, super-8 video, portuguese TV appearances and stuff. Lush.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

while we're on this topic, can someone please explain to me the point of DVD audios?

In short (and I think there's a thread somewhere about it), DVD audio and Super-Audio CD are two new formats that have higher sound quality than a regular CD and support 5.1 mixes. They haven't caught on too widely yet but most record stores seem to carry a few dozen titles in each format - stuff like The Eagles' Greatest Hits and Dark Side of the Moon.

DVD Audio requires a special player - your regular DVD player won't support it - although there are also people who ship regular audio programs on the standard DVD format, so that they can deliver five hours of continuous music (Morton Feldman's String Quartet II is available on a DVD).

I can only imagine that would be a licensing nightmare. Does anyone remember when they started putting the Beavis and Butthead episodes out on tape, but they had to cut out all the videos? (And if you got the Beavis and Butthead calendar - and I'm not saying anything, but if you got it, they took the Metallica and AC/DC names off their t-shirts.)

But Spike Jonez is supposed to have a DVD coming out with his best videos, and that'll be a good time.

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The Bjork Volumen DVD is awesome. Gondry, Spike etc. Also, the D.A.F.T. video has my favorite DVD extra of all time, where Gondry explains the meaning of the "Around The World" clip.

Also, the Pet Shop Boys are about to release some 6 hour extravaganza of all their videos.

On my wishlist are a New Order promos compilation and a Creation records comp.

The Incredible String Band - Be Glad For the Song Has No Ending (or, as I prefer to call it, Be Glad For the Extremely Stoned and Strange Scottish Hippies Making a DVD That Makes Absolutely No Fucking Sense Whatsoever)

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd recommend cinematic orchestra's man with a video camera.
they basically scored a ukrainian film from, like, 1930. it's mainly shots of everyday life from that time/place. it's interesting & the music is great.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Also recommended by me: How to Disappear Completely, the Radiohead tour DVD.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
have we had a newer music dvds thread? i'm sure we must have but anyway.

any updates here?

Treblekicker (treblekicker), Friday, 21 July 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

- Trapped In The Closet, obviously
- Can DVD. I haven't pulled it off the shelf in a long time, but from what I recall, the interviews are dull but the archival footage (particularly an Old Grey Whistle Test appearance) is spectacular. lots of vintage synth action too
- i can't believe i have owned Interstella 5555 for like three years now and still never watched it. i have an innate fear of anime though. should i break it out?
- there's a live ODB DVD which is ultra-cheapo and generally worthless when the DJ puts on the non-acappella tracks, but most of the older stuff ("Brooklyn Zoo") you can hear him, and it's amazing. and he rock that ear-flap hat

also RFI Wattstax?

Space Is The Place is not worth buying on DVD. Not that it's a bad movie, in fact it's a great movie, but the DVD is a travesty. When the movie was originally being made, Sun Ra insisted that a large portion, about 30 minutes, be cut. Now that Sun Ra has passed, the director (who apparently thinks he's some great artist) has restored those 30 minutes on this Director's Cut DVD. The only problem is that Sun Ra (a true artist) was absolutely right in cutting those scenes. They don't really feature Sun Ra at all, but rather focus on a pimps and hos subplot that is totally conventional Blaxploitation. This side plot completely takes away from the mystery and spacey-ness of the film, but I guess the director liked it because it featured more "real actors."

The funny thing is, I bought the Pink Floyd at Pompei DVD at the same time as Space Is The Place. The Pink Floyd one is also a director's cut that is just as sucky as the Sun Ra one, but Pink Floyd made the wise decision to include the original (superior) version as well, making it a much more worthwhile disc.

Matt Olken (Moodles), Friday, 21 July 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

Some good DVDs:
Sun Ra - A Joyful Noise
Q-Bert - Wave Twisters
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
Miles Davis - Miles Electric
Rush - R30, Rush in Rio

wow, i had no idea about that. i've only seen it on dvd. i thought the blaxploitation aspects were way over-the-top (and ultimately racist), and couldn't understand why ra would sign off on such a project.

a joyful noise is the sun ra dvd to get if yer getting only one. great performances, useful, if sketchy, background info.

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Friday, 21 July 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

the minutemen!

autovac (autovac), Friday, 21 July 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

Some of the blaxploitation stuff was in the Sun Ra approved version, but all the scenes where the overseer and the tv guy interact with the hos were not.

Incredible String Band Be Glad, for the Song has No Ending

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Friday, 21 July 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

The new Luna DVD is fantastic.

The Flaming Lips remastered The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi in 5.1 DD.

Beastie Boys Anthology is a Criterion release with some of the videos in a multi-angle and remix format.

I definitely second the SFA Rings Around The World. Phantom Planet has a DVD 5.1 DTS remaster for the album, but the videos are only in DD.

turkey (turkey), Friday, 21 July 2006 20:19 (nineteen years ago)

No music DVD collection would be complete without AC/DC's Family Jewels - 1 disc of Bon, 1 disc of Brian.

I also really like the Storefront Hitchcock concert movie Demme did.

EZ Snappin (EZSnappin), Friday, 21 July 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

the Wattstax film is amazing; a number of scenes have got to be watched to be believed (Rufus Thomas starting, and then stopping, a fan riot for example) - I saw a film print screened years ago but haven't seen the DVD version.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 21 July 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

I'm reviving in case anything good has been recently released on the music dvd front.

Also, I'd like to add

My Morning Jacket, Okonokos
The Pixies, QUIET loud QUIET
The Complete Monterey Pop Festival, specifically Otis Redding's performance on disc 2.
Lomax the Songhunter

how are the NIRVANA 'unplugged' extras? are they as good as the you tube extras of them sat about bored while kurt reads a book?
