I wanna know more
about H-town rap bizness;
diggin' Baby Bash

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The combination of Bushwick Bill, Scarface, and Willie D. on those classic 5th Ward Geto Boys tracks will never be topped. That is all I know about Houston, TX.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, pretty much what Ben said. Most Houston rap really isn't that good to bother with.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Screw, RIP.

doug (doug), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

SPM's "Never Change" and "Time and Money" are real good. I'm not too into his early stuff though, but its a shame he likes to molest pre teen girls.

Swisha House has a real good thing going on. Chamillionaire is in my opinion one of the most creative lyricists out there right now. I like Michael Watts' screw tapes alot more than DJ Screws, he is the god of chopping. Mike Jones and Magno "First Round Draft Picks" is a damn fine album, and it comes with the screwed and chopped version. You can't go wrong with that.

Lil Flip is pretty reliable. His track on the new Luda "Screwed Up" is the best on the album. (maybe "We Got Them Guns" produced by DJ paul and juicy j is better)

But most of Houston I feel is pretty hit and miss. Lil Keke, ESG and Slim Thug, and most of the more underground people I can't get into.

joshd, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I got that K-Otix album, Universal, I think. Got it more than a year ago and probably only listened to it twice. Not bad, just meh.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

lil flip adds a lot to the great david banner record.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I was a fan of David Banner since the THEM FIREWATER BOYZ album, and when I first heard "Like A Pimp" I was worried about him coming out on a song where he simply gets massacred by the guest. But things seem to be working out for him, so I am happy.

I love how the beginning of the "Cadillac on 22's" video starts off with a little girl being run over by a Cadillac on 22's.

joshd, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll second that Swisha House recommendation.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey wait -- it is close to Halloween

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 16 October 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Chamillionaire is really good. He's perfect at the little punchlines ('Ain't gotta buy Doritos cause we already got chips, nigga') that the whole thing relies on and he can still flow. Like, he just uses the punchlines as hooks, kind of. (Paul Wall just uses them back to back to back, 'Niggas think I'm working for Kellogs, mouth full of frosted flakes. I wreck the mic like if you drive and you lost your brakes.') Chamillion kind of reminds me of Flip but he doesn't have the distinctive voice. Someone comes with a great verse and I have to rewind it back and figure out who it was and it's always Chamillion. (I'm pretty sure he's on every single Swishahouse release ever.) (Best Chamillionaire verses: Yung-Ro - 'Ya'll Don't Want Us to Come,' Paul Wall and Chamillionaire - 'Balla Talk II,' the 'Itz Ya Dog' freestyle from Before Da Kappa 2K1)

d k (d k), Friday, 17 October 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

it'z ya dog freestyle is amazing. ten minutes of HEAT.

joshd, Saturday, 18 October 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all about Lil Chuli and that guy who gets Ziggy w/ Miss Piggy, South Park Mexican. Really, I don't know shit, I got all of that from a lady in my office who was from TX, She said some of the Homies figurines I had reminded her of them. But Houston is most famous for that 620 movie.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 18 October 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

SPM has been sent to prison for several decades.

Big T ft. Lil Flip - 'Candy On Chrome' (My favourite Flip verse ever. It's so cool.)
Yungstar - 'We Got Plex'
ESG and Slim Thug - 'Down Here'
Big Pokey ft. Big Moe - 'My Boo'
Lil Flex - 'Lights, Camera, Action'

dlk (d k), Saturday, 18 October 2003 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
I just heard that Baby Bash track for the first time today. It's bad and he's really ugly. Look at his eyes!

d k (d k), Sunday, 14 December 2003 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Free download of the Color Changing Click Cleveland Special mixtape. Featuring a remix of the Lil Flip remix of that DMX song. (Chamillionaire is for sure the hottest guy in H-Town right now. [Everybody: 'Mayyne, Cham is the real Freestyle King. Flip been slipping for a minute now. Do we really need another track about how many watches he's got? He needs to give it up.' Cham: 'Well, I mean, I'm hot and all but Flip actually freestyles and I don't. So, like, it's different.'])(This is the last CCC thing with Paul Wall on it, too. And he's barely on it. He's rich.)

d k (d k), Sunday, 14 December 2003 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
The newer Swishahouse comp (The Day Hell Broke Loose 2) is great, I can't believe I haven't seen anyone mention it. Even comes with a chopped/screwed mix for the price of one album.

Highlights - Slim Thug/Mike Jones "Still Tippin'" and Mike Jones "Got It Sowed Up"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

every swishahouse release is basically the same thing, quality and content-wise. the final chapter 2k4 is out now, too. they've gone back to putting the freestyle first then the full song after it, which is minor but better, and paul wall is back with swishahouse and all over their new stuff.

the new z-ro is out, too, life of joseph mcvey. he's truly the most underrated rapper in the south, i think. and not really a regular, post-screw houston guy, even though he was a marginal SUC member. he's sort of serious and scarface-y and stuff. i think he's still in jail, too, for a probation violation thing! he was about to set up a 2004 geto boys with bun b and scarface and, i think, slim thug.

new color changing click, back to the future, just the newest ccc mixtape, the second one without paul wall, regular ccc solidness. chamilion's mixtape messiah is coming soon, just a plain old mixtape but has everyone excited because of the slow jamz freestyle. and his greatest hits is still pretty recent and good.

yung-ro - undergrind, liveola - programmed to wreck, og ron c - paid in full mixtape, paul wall and lil flip - u gotta feel us (all the leaked lil flip stuff and some of the stuff from paul wall's major label thing that's coming out), the extended version of lil flip's clover gs mixtape, there's the boss hawg outlaws allstars mixtape from the end of last year, lots of stuff.

dylannn, Saturday, 20 July 2013 04:47 (twelve years ago)

-- "grippin grain" must have been the first time i heard slim thug. i probably wrote about it a long time ago. alltime summer cruise track.

-- when i heard suga free, the first comparison that came to mind was mr. 3-2.

-- "1-900-dial-a-crook," i forgot that even existed. predates master p's instructions on baking soda/pyrex by 6 years, predates "1-900-hustler" by 9 years.

dylannn, Saturday, 20 July 2013 04:54 (twelve years ago)

3-2 has been on so many albums and i know next to nothing about him. he was in convicts with big mike doing rock hard houston gangster rap, then he was in blac monks doing weird mystical tomb raider rap over funky early 90s mike dean beats, then maybe he was in southside playaz with some screwed up click members, then he went solo and the last time he came out he was on some hardcore gang-affiliated imagery....

http://nattymari-unfortunate-events.blogspot.ie/2009/04/victoria-secret-drawls.html

^this is good, esp. if ur new to this stuff, what dylannn calls the "blue-collar" side of houston rap. mp3 is still live. for best results follow it with the 12 min dj screw "swangin & bangin" from codiene fiend.

zvookster, Thursday, 25 July 2013 01:37 (twelve years ago)

nah man i think the blue collar strain is the next generation back from screwed up click: street military and affiliates, point blank, kb, southpark coalition and affiliates, terrorists, k-rino, .380, wreckless klan. all the screwed up click guys are promethazineswilling layabouts.

dylannn, Thursday, 25 July 2013 02:30 (twelve years ago)

ah ok. i knew street military were keystones to it for u but thx for the list & distinction :D

zvookster, Thursday, 25 July 2013 03:46 (twelve years ago)

first generation -> working legit jobs, hanging out at barbecues or in jail
second generation -> putting out sequels to sequels of late-90s/early-2000s hits, trying to ingratiate themselves with paul wall or dead
