The continuing rock education of Colin

Hello,

I'm 36 but I have been bying rock records for the first time in my life. I am totally there with early Judas Priest, where should I go next? Some Slayer? Bear in mind that all I know is techno, electro and house. But I like hard rocking riffs and lots of tuneage, a dark, rough, underproduced sound, attitude, simplicity and a good solid backbeat, and a little cheese and knowing camp is fine by me (nb, I think all death metal is camp). But I don't really go for ultra-commercial stuff. Please advise this rock ignoramus.

Also, I

AC/DC!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 16 October 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, thanks Miccio, I should 've mentioned that I now have all the Bon Scott-era AccaDacca my heart could desire. And I still say Let There Be Rock is the best one, but let's not go there. I want n90's and naughties stuff, you know, I need to modernise a bit.

Also I like an act that stretches and goes in unexpected directions, from one record to the next, in terms of their production aesthetic and their tunes. It makes life interesting - even if they don't always succeed (eg Priest) - but of course if they do always succeed, so much the better.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 16 October 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Husker Du! Kix!

oh wait. those are '80s. Oh! The Yeah Yeah Yeahs!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 16 October 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

My girf's got Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I like it!

I personally like it a lot harder and a lot sillier. YYY's are maybe a little too cool for me to really love. I'm not invited to their party cos I'm a nerd. So bring on the stupid lyrics and the crazy jagged riffing!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 16 October 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

burzum

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 16 October 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not invited to their party cos I'm a nerd.

Exactly! I thought I was the only one who occasionally felt a band was too hip for me.

David Allen, Thursday, 16 October 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha! It's true.

Burzum, Gaz? I'm assuming from the alone that they're Satanists from Norway?.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 16 October 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

UFO -- start with "Strangers In the Night" and work forwards and back to taste.

Budgie -- the first five LPs.

Slade -- "Slade Alive" and "Slayed."

Montrose -- first album.

ZZ Top -- "Tres Hombres."

If you're going to go for Slayer, go for Coroner, too.

The first Cheap Trick album.

Blue Oyster Cult -- the newest live CD. It's not the old band
but it's a good sampler and it leans to the guitarus maximus
heavier, riffic parts of the catalog. If you want the old band
in a sampler that's a guitar heavy mix, it's "On Your Feet or
On Your Knees."

Foghat -- "Fool for the City" or "Live," maybe "Energized" for
lesser known over-the-top hysterical performance.

Aerosmith -- "Get Your Wings," "Rocks."

Uriah Heep -- first album (Very "Eavy, Very 'Umble"), if enjoyed,
"Look At Yourself." Or vice versa.

Robin Trower -- "Bridge of Sighs."

Witchfinder General -- "Death Penalty"

There, that'll blow a hole in your wallet.

George Smith, Thursday, 16 October 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks George!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 16 October 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah colin burzum are the black stuff. they may be too arty for ya though. filosofum has what has been described elsewhere on ilm as shoegaze black metal on side one (it still rocks though!) and a 20 minute ambient piece on the second side which sounds like namlook.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 16 October 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

colin you need The Datsuns s/t album. trust me.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 16 October 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Dust - Hard Attack - obscure 70s hard rock, excellent

Sir Lord Baltimore - obscure 70s hard rock excellent time 10!!!

Iron Maiden - the tinny production might turn you off, but I'd check out at least Piece of Mind or the debut album....

I'm in the minority but I love Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow

Captain Beyond - a bit prog, a bit southern rock, all good!

not to state the obvious, but if you don't own Black Sabbath's Paranoid or Masters of Reality, you should (or Vol. 4, for that matter)

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Sir Lord Baltimore - excellent TIMES 10....seriously, there's a CD that compiles two of their albums that's absolutely amazing.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, for more modern stuff that is "contemporary" but w/70s sludgey/catchy flair, Queens of the Stone Age are great (also to state the obvious)

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

People, you're spoiling me.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 16 October 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Colin, just buy the Joy Division box set.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Thursday, 16 October 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Joy Division, but they might be a little cold/minimal if you're more into the 70s/metal vibe.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Motörhead
White Zombie
Maybe Quicksand - Slip

Jeremy (Jeremy), Thursday, 16 October 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Slayer, yes, especially the earlier stuff. Reing in blood, Show no mercy.
Soundgarden, kyuss,

Cacaman Flores, Thursday, 16 October 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

george, you forgot Pentagram.

scott seward, Thursday, 16 October 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Colin,

I have a question. I find it interesting that, as someone who's only really been into techno/house/etc....that the rock you're finally coming around to is the real capital-R Rawk of the 70s/metal variety....I guess I've always thought of that as so diametrically opposed to the aethetics of dance/techno music...i.e. the theatricality (if that's a word), the guitarist as huge cock wielding god worship, the sludgey riffs, bombast, etc....(all of which, having grown up in a small town in the Midwest is encoded in my DNA and I still love).....anyway, I guess I'm just curious as to why you are suddenly liking the kind of rock that you're apparently liking.....I would have expected you to gravitate towards more artsy/experiemental type stuff that maybe shares some qualities with techno....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

since you already like electro may i suggest Von Lmo-Future Language. it's certainly campy over-the-top riffage albeit via sci-fi.
( and while i'm at it pick up the new Metal Urbain comp "Anarchy In Paris!" too. cool 70's french synth-punk. and they always had a good backbeat cuz they used a drum machine.and they rock. and they remind me of red lorry yellow lorry and the stooges.i'm gonna go listen to some treponem pal now or maybe some young gods cuz i need to hear the language of love. wait, french is the language of love, right? or is it italian? )

scott seward, Thursday, 16 October 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, isn't it weird? What's your theory? I suppose though the techno I liked was always the really basic, primal stuff. I mean, Alan Oldham's more metal outings like X-313, early gabba and UR, pitilessly hypnotic industrial grooves like Regis and Surgeon...

As for ego, well, Derrick May. But hang on, I have had another thought about this. There's something really, er, STRUTTING about the music I like, whether it be funk, techno, electro (such a strutting music!) or rock. It kinda swaggers along, it's, erm, cocky. I love that.

Ah, but you know I also love the opposite: quiet, gentle, reflective stuff. So really maybe it's just a question of getting older and wanting to invesigate things one knows nothing about - moving from the familiar, step by-step, rather than just diving in at some random spot.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 16 October 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

george, you forgot Pentagram.

Yes, indeed, there's lots I forgot.

The Godz rool. M-I-double-S-I-double-S-I-double-P-I!
Bobby Gentry as filtered through Marshall Super Lead and
a six pack.

George Smith, Thursday, 16 October 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

but colin, you great Numanoid, yer fine just as you are!

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a Numanoid, maybe there's the connection. It's a small step from Gary Numan circa 1983 to Rob Halford. Visually. And lyrically, it's a small step from Pure to Painkiller. Perhaps.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm taking notes, thank you all again you rock pigs.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Vincebus Eruptum. New self-titled LP is out on Load now. Heavy sludge, distorto-bass, insane vocals and lyrics about dirty socks & farting (as well as killing your parents and smoking crack).

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Heavy sludge, distorto-bass, insane vocals and lyrics about dirty socks & farting (as well as killing your parents and smoking crack).

if this is true then (a) this would be the greatest album EVAH!; or (b) it would be any Queens of the Stone Age record (which would mean that it really isn't the greatest album evah).

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a small step from Gary Numan circa 1983 to Rob Halford.

but would mr. halford have ever dyed his hair blue (i know, that's 1984 numan) or looked like a bryan ferry clone (that's 1986 numan)?

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

nb, I think all death metal is camp

then Cradle of Filth is def. for you!

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

You people are just too helpful, and I cry tears of gratitude.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

-- Little Big Macher (llamasfu...) (webmail), October 16th, 2003. (llamasfur)

Hmmm. No, I don't think so. Gary Numan really does take the cake.

Then again, would Numan have worn what appears to be black tights and a jerkin (back cover, British Steel)? Or sported a feather boa (Rob Halford's ill-fated project, Two)?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

YES! Halford's S&M Robin Hood period! love that picture!!!!

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 16 October 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

You might like Lungfish. Big backbeats, huge repetitive guitar riffs, very campy in a worship-the-incredibly-weird-guy sort of way.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Iron Maiden! The other side of the Priest coin (and the side that I like).

Ooh, Iced Earth! They're awesome for campy thrash metal riffage (they did a concept album based on Spawn for chrissake).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Manowar - unwittingly camp Conan The Barbarian meets Judas Priest absurdity (start with Sign Of The Hammer)
Rhapsody - Manowar x10
Manilla Road
Warlord
amd maybe some Dio / early Rainbow if you don't get easily embarrassed in record shops

udu wudu (udu wudu), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Why stop there, just get some Helloween and Stratovarius (and Gamma Ray and Bal Sagoth) to complete the circle.

Oh, and DIO is more embarassing than Manowar and Rhapsody?

Got meself Slayer - 'Reign In Blood' on the board's recommendation yesterday. "Angel of Death! Angel of Death".

My favourite moment: When the singer goes, 'Enter into the realm of Satan!!!' and the groove immediately goes from 4/4 into a raunchy 3/4 grind. Of course! Satan himself definitely grooves in 3/4.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 18 October 2003 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 18 October 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, colin, are you as much of a numanoid as this guy?

Hello??!! Have any of you people heard more than three songs by Gary Numan? Do any of you know his real name? The mans a legend and theres no denying it. And you Old Fart, he put quotes around friends because hes had bad experiances. Before he was famous, he was in a band with some 'friends' and they practically abandoned him!! Excluded him from everything!!! So don't go around thinking you know everything about him, thats a Numanoid like myself's job. By the way, for your information(all of you) cars, Are 'Friends' Electric, and down in the park aren't the only songs he wrote! There are over 300!!
-- The Turtle #1 (numanoi...), November 21st, 2002.

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Sunday, 19 October 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I know the answers to Turtle's questions without googling!

His real name is Gary Webb. His first band was Mean Street. They kicked him out even though he wrote all the songs. It was so unfair! His early track, 'Mean Street' recounts that experience. In it, he sings, brilliantly, 'I want to see you die'.

But even though I'm a total Numanoid, Little Big Macher, my flatmate has even me beat: shee has a very rare early fan book, 'Numan by Computer' which has a fan letter in it where a girl dreams she is rescued by Gary Numan! He heals her wounds and everything! Plus it is wall to wall with superb photos, very stylised, and ripe for ripping off by today's crop of electro youngsters. There's even one of him smiling! He also says at one point, "I think the world's going homosexual'. That would be the early Bowie influence, then.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 19 October 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

you know, i've heard "mean street" (or its version on the plan), and i knew that mean street was the name of his first band. i never put 2 and 2 together, though! (it is a good song)

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Sunday, 19 October 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't it? That early guitar rock he did!! Some of it smokes! And I do like the lo-fi production on these early albums - raw and trebly, rough and scratchy.

And did The Stranglers rip off 'Bombers' for their fine song, 'Skindeep'? Numan fans say: yes!

duane, according to what I've just read here and there on the web, Blue Cheer's first two albums are where they really nail something special. But where to jump in on Link Wray's long and chequered history - start from the start?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 19 October 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Budgie -- Diamond Head -- Obscure Heavy Metal (RFI)
