Which genres/styles of music can you pinpoint accurately or inaccurately to one area, one album, one set of albums, one band, one person, etc?

Okay. Jazz?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't it all rather mushy? Major genres, that is.

Debito (Debito), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

shoegaze came from Loveless
ambient came from Brian Eno

jazz - invented in 1879 by a new orleans sausage vendor named boobs oglethorpe. the name comes from the word his daughter angalina used to describe the residual grease. NEXT!

Shoegazer came from whoever invented shoes, surely? And, as I believe I've said before, ambience dates back to the invention of the windchime.

True, shoegaze was coined with Loveless, but the Jesus and the Mary Chain were certainly the origin of the genre.

The Silver Apples predated Eno by almost a decade.

See, it's mushy, and those are pretty specific genres.

Debito (Debito), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

actually shoegaze started with "isn't anything"

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

indie pop started with Young Marble Giants

Oh yeah.

Also, six years insn't really 'almost a decade,' but I stand by the rest of it!

Debito (Debito), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Digital Dancehall---"Under Mi Sleng Ting"

oops (Oops), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

punk - indie - shoegaze - ... >>> Velvet Underground & Nico

daarkbee, Thursday, 16 October 2003 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yes well there is that

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 16 October 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

True, shoegaze was coined with Loveless, but the Jesus and the Mary Chain were certainly the origin of the genre.

The Silver Apples predated Eno by almost a decade.

Two leetle problems - JAMC were not shoegaze, Silver Apples were no ambient. Other than that, fine.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

But Discreet Music came out of Eno listening to an existing recording of Harp music. And surely John Cage or someone had similar ideas prior to Eno's "discovery" of ambient music - "Indeterminacy", maybe?

You can't "pinpoint" anything origins in music.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 16 October 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, music is an evolution.

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 16 October 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Calypso and Soca came from Trinidad and Tobago. Steel drum music too.
