Sum up your personality in three pieces of music

Scott Walker - Tilt
I am terrorized by unnameable fears, I am moody to the point of having multiple personalities, I like things that are difficult

Astrud Gilberto - Girl From Ipanema
Saudade, enjoying your own melacholy, love of exoticism, the sensual pleasure of surf and the sun beating down on you at the beach, the sensual pleasure of beautiful women who sing slightly off-key in a foreign language or accent

Mozart - Clarinet Concerto
I like classical music, that proabably makes me middle class or elitist. I could have chosen the Requiem or some Beethoven sturm und drang, but the Clarinet Concerto is both sunny and profound, and sunny and profound is very hard to do and sometimes you need it

Two-Faced January (Two-Faced January), Thursday, 16 October 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Nelly The Elephant
A Forest
My Legendary Girlfriend

do the maths.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Tortoise - Djed

It soothes me. Sometimes you just want to sit down and let the sound flow through you. I don't enjoy the confusion of discos, I am a "little pub with some friends" guy. Calm and relaxed.

Other pieces with similar effect:
Rodan - Bible Silver Corner
Fugazi - Long Division
Blur - Oily Water

The Smashing Pumpkins - Cherub Rock

Makes me wanna fuck shit up. It brings up the violent side of me, that needs to be released once in a while, in order to be tamed. I am sometimes a difficult person to deal with, but, alas, it is just the demons trying to get out.

Other pieces with similar effect:
Duran Duran - Careless Memories
Yes - The Gates of Delirium
Fugazi - Caustic Acrostic

Genesis - After the Ordeal

Remembers me how much I love Music. It gives me chills up my spine and stimulates my brain. It just makes me happy. I am a happy person most of the times, who likes to make other people happy.

Other pieces with similar effect:
Smashing Pumpkins - Thru the eyes of Ruby
Radiohead - Lucky
Mike Oldfield - Taurus II

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

This probably isn't the point of this thread, but if I had to choose the 3 pieces of music that give a picture of what is going on inside of my head, I would choose:
Beatles, Rubber Soul
O.Messiaen, L'Ascension
the intro to Funkadelic's "Good Old Music"

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 16 October 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The round-and-around paranoia and delusion of Miles Davis' "Circle in the Round" + the hahahaha ridiculosity of Ween's "Hey There Fancypants" + the overblown emotionally overwhelmed helplessness of Mr. Bungle's "Pink Cigarette" = a pretty good indicator of how I be.

"Talk Up What's Your Story" Tanya Stephens
"Truth" Dwele
"Hold it Down" (Osunlade Remix)

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Thursday, 16 October 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

like jack cole above, here is my momentary 3 selections:

drive like jehu - "new math"

hi i like to count 123412345612345671234561234512345 woah these drums are on the beat, now on the off beat, now they are everywhere and this guy is screaming about something while the guitarists are inventing new chords, make that new music. post-hardcore (aka "emo" circa 1992) and indie rock has nor ever will sound so perfect.

my bloody valentine - "to here knows when"

is this a guitar or a phased jet turbine? are those synths actually reprocessed drum sounds? why does the singular voice sound both like a man and a woman singing perfectly in synch? i can't tell if it's getting louder or softer and the VU meter keeps bleeding red and redder.

sade - "by your side"

i am sometimes running low on hope and sometimes music sustains what little hope is left in the tank. unrelated to that: coming up with music for weddings is obviously a lot different than the clubs, radio shows, or for your friends with eclectic tastes... it's a real lesson in humility for the snob side of your personality. this song is hopeful, reassuring, and such a testimonial to selfless love that i played it twice during the wedding reception. i hope nobody noticed (but even if they did it's like, "oh okay here's that really great song again".)

Kiss to whoever mentions Tom Recchion.

Nat 'King' Cole- "Nature Boy"
Betty Davis- "He Was a Big Freak"
Jean Plum- "Look at the Boy"

Beta, Friday, 17 October 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

haha. I just picked my three favorite songs of all time, which will do as good as any.

Queen And David Bowie “Under Pressure”
Adam Ant “Stand And Deliver”
Bob Dylan “Like A Rolling Stone”

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 17 October 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, reasons. Adam Ant and Bob Dylan are yelling criticisms at each other and when they agree it sounds like "Under Pressure," with the former scatting operatically, demanding that love be given one more chance while the latter announces this is our last dance and gets kinda overwraught. That'll do.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 17 October 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 19 October 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

as of today:

Daniel Johnston - "Peek A Boo"
--(quintessential song to listen to when wallowing in self-pity)

Arnold Schoenberg - "Moses und Aron" (especially Act II, Scene 3)
--beautiful, atonal, extremely frightening (act II, scene 3 is the orgy around golden calf sequence)

Bonnie "Prince" Billy - "Wolf Among Wolves"

and an extra for good luck:
Rob Crow - "Kill All the Humans"
--"I'm so filled with hate today
I want to cry but I can't seem to
I'm dry as a fucking desert
I just stare off into space
I must be a fucking robot
I don't want to be a fucking robot
Kill all the humans"

J. Weiss (jweiss), Sunday, 19 October 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

TFUL282- Hurricane
Spacy, droney, rambly, hypnotic, like the states I tend to get into staring at leaves blowing in the wind and seeing shapes in the clouds. The lyrics contain a pair of lines that somehow perfectly describe an abstract concept that has obsessed me for a very long time.

Shannon Wright- Dirty facade
Like a really morbid cabaret or fucked up, hysterical carnival music. Because, you know, I'm dramatic and emotional like that. I have a fixation on purity and corruption which, um, is sort of embodied by this song, in my personal interpretation.

Bel Canto- Unicorn
A sense of wonder and untainted idealism, the idea of a secret spiritual guide. Unicorns are a lifelong theme for me.

Runners-up could be "falling in love with the wolfboy" by Magnetic Fields, or "nothing rises to meet me" by bill callahan.

I'm a depressing, pretentious fuck!

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Sunday, 19 October 2003 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 19 October 2003 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and the reasons.

The first song is about living at home and trying your best, the second song is about being a bit of a loser with guitar solos, the third song is about being a complete loser. Oh dear. I mean I like Poison and all that but I'm totally not Poison. I'm between twee and a hard place.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 19 October 2003 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
-change of season by matthew good band for the line "feel like i'm losing for money / feel like i'm losing for free / feeling older than the dead angel on my shoulder claims to be" well alright three lines but you get the point.

-so gently we go by i mother earth. it's very...erm....anthemic in a quiet, understated way (but gets nice and loud at the end)

-the day i tried to live by soundgarden. somehow i feel like that when i wake up in the morning but it never carries through the day ("i woke the same / as any other day except the voices in my head / said seize the day / pull the trigger, drop the blade / and watch the rolling heads....")

andromeda, Sunday, 2 November 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)
