I know nothing about this band apart from the fact that one of them used to have sex with Peaches - I assumed he was paid well for the ordeal

&Yet & Yet is so much better.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i think its damn great

justin (Justin M), Thursday, 16 October 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

my former roommate tells me that it is better than "Goodbye Enemy Airship..." but admitted he only heard it once. he used the word "narcotic" when describing the sound of it.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 16 October 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, I almost listened to it at the store today; instead I grabbed the new Polmo Polpo, and thought about grabbing the new Silver Mt. Zion. Why is it that Constellation records always seem to come out in clumps?

"&Yet & Yet is so much better"

you're nuts!

OK, not really, but I guess this just shows that different people like the group for different reasons. I thought &yet &yet was a total snooze, but I think the new one is really beautiful and a big leap forward for them.

Is it "better than" Goodbye Enemy Airship? I could see someone making that argument from an intellectual standpoint, but viscerally, I'll go with "almost as good as..."

I listened to it once at work this morning, and I think it's equal to "Goodbye Enemy...". Much better than "&yet&yet" . I may change my opinion upon futher listenings, but I really like this record so far.

Listened to it once, and found it... slightly underwhelming, in a highly listenable but not exactly grabbing sort of way. A bit GY!BE-offshoot-post-rock-by-numbers, I thought, without any of the aspects which can make the other bands annoying but also without any of the aspects that make the other bands *special*. I wasn't paying attention much at the time, though, and I've been told by a couple of people that I need to listen to it a second time and then will realise it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. So.

Sean, the new Silver Mt Zion is glorious. Buy buy buy buy buy it: it's worth it for the first side alone.

On Winter Hymn ... you can hear an obvious restatement of some of Goodbye Enemy Airship ...'s themes (e.g. suspiciously identical horn arrangements, guitar parts, dynamics) in what amounts to a tacit admission that &Yet &Yet was a misstep.

It's also a work of tremendous resignation. Winter Hymn ... often feels as if the mechanics of being a seven piece band who write songs the way they do presents some insurmountable obstacles. Personality conflicts within the group? They're not on the same page, are they?

When a "big" rock band (ie. six or more members) like Lambchop, Belle and Sebastian, or even GYBE! plays, there's always that mental counting of heads that lines up noises to faces. A "big" rock band (I suppose I should put "rock" in quotes as well) that does it RIGHT always has one or two members that look like they're doing nothing at all. Like ... anyone seen GYBE! live? What the heck does Roger do, anyway? sits there looking cool (Ibanez Talman, Roland Jazz Chorus amps) How about Lambchop ... how can so many people make such an airy sound? With Winter Hymn ... it's like everyone is just waiting for their turn to talk again. So frustrating ...

I've been on the fence about getting this. For one, I've been trying to avoid buying another post-rock record, a) because that's all I listened to for a while and I've been trying to branch out, and b) because I've been disappointed twice this year -- by Dirty Three and Mogwai. And then also, I heard an mp3 of "Frederica." I liked it tremendously the first time, but then on subsequent listens, I'd realize six minutes into it that I hadn't been paying attention at all. Hmmm. But that Pitchfork review made it sound fantastic, so I dunno.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 18 October 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Got both this and the Silver Mt. Zion after all; yer right, the Silver Mt. Zion is great, and the Do Make is pretty okay but in a far more generic post-rock way than before. Oh well. More listens required I guess.

ten years pass...

Astounded by my post from 2003. Like mostly at the way I approached whether and how to get into a band.

jaymc, Sunday, 3 August 2014 06:16 (eleven years ago)

But ha so I actually revived this thread because I am listening to & Yet & Yet, and it's good! It reminds me of 2002, a certain period of my life, and when I revisited my favorite albums of 2002 for a blog post I wrote in, like, 2007 or 2008, i like took it out of storage -- the CD -- and listened to it for the first time in a while.

jaymc, Sunday, 3 August 2014 06:18 (eleven years ago)

oh and also haha AIM conversations w/slocki where he asked me if i was into do make say think

jaymc, Sunday, 3 August 2014 06:19 (eleven years ago)
