Jonny Greenwood - Bodysong OST

What I want it to sound like is the quiet bits of Messiaen's Turangalila Symphony, and from what I've read, my wants are confirmed - Penderecki, Alice Coltrane and Miles Davis too. String quartets! So a further exploration of music Radiohead might have only hinted at. Hands up who's heard it - thoughts?

Damian (Damian), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't heard it...

Is it worth getting? (And yes, I am a Radiohead fan, before someone posts the obvious facetiousness.)

kate (kate), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard the sampler - the orchestral bits seem pretty cool, though the electronic bits seem kind of quaint. I think it's leaked by now.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, yes, worth getting (and I know that seems like a given coming from me, but I was honestly surprised by how good it is).

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I really really really love this.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 16 October 2003 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it coming out in the U.S. anytime soon?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you like this more than Hail to the Thief, Melissa?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 16 October 2003 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

AMG has an october 27th release date for it.. they're often wrong about those things, but I think they use US release dates as their reference

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 16 October 2003 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The 27th is a Monday, so it's a UK date (plucked from a reliable site two weeks ago; can't recall which one).

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

And October 27th is my birthday. :)
Sonny, not sure I like it better than HTTT, though they're definitely in competition. Very different types of music though. Apples and oranges.

I don't think the album has a US release date at all. I've pre-ordered it off amazon.co.uk

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

:(

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Any word on American screenings of Bodysong? Or any screenings whatsoever?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't heard any mumblings to that effect, no...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm hoping for a DVD release, at least.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, I think even Julio would like this...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 16 October 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

:\

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 17 October 2003 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish more people were interested.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 17 October 2003 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i ve actually been rabidly awaiting its release and checking daily on slsk for weeks now. and now that everyone has it, i still cant seem to DL it. very frustrating. jonny's my favorite musician ever.

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 17 October 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not very available on SoulSeek, no. I was also kinda hoping I could hear it for the first time with the visuals, but that doesn't seem likely, I guess

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 17 October 2003 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I'm hella interested Melissa, I'm trying to order it online but am having no luck tracking it down.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 17 October 2003 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick, amazon.co.uk has it for not too much money.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 18 October 2003 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

unless these are all fakes, looks to me like its got a pretty huge slsk presence

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 18 October 2003 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Been interested in this since I first heard of it a few days ago, but what's the film like---if it could attract such talent?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 18 October 2003 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.bodysong.com - the best indication yet :).

Damian (Damian), Sunday, 19 October 2003 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

That website hasn't changed at all in months...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 20 October 2003 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 20 October 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm currently trying to finalise my Kish Kash review and I've got a poundingly fucking vicious headcold, so I can't say much more than that I've listened to Bodysong three times now and have gone from quite enjoying it to being fucking impressed.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 20 October 2003 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like to hear this, but have not had the time or cash to check it out yet.

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 20 October 2003 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm definitely interested in this...the film looks well-worth checking out as well.

disco stu (disco stu), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

So what is it, anyway? Greenwood conducts a symphony orchestra or just has something arranged or what?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

He composed & arranged a bunch of pieces for various ensembles (string quartets and jazz ensembles) and also created music using his own keyboards/samplers/computer programs etc.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

String quartets!

Damian (Damian), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the jazz ones that are best; all that classical stuff's pretty much lost on me.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds good in theory, but it's a shame that the poor bastard is playing right into the hands of R-head's critics. "we told you they were a shitty prog rock group! look, orchestras and jazz! concept albums about dead royalty can not be far behind, you must abandon ship"

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

But it actually sounds really good, Dave.

I'm surprised no one has posted this yet.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking this, trust me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Johhny Greenwood interviewed on Front Row, be quick I don't know how long it'll stay online.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 23 October 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd like to throw in my share of praise. A lot if it's very derivative, but in a totally johnny way (which is wonderful) i love in track 10 how it just kind of goes from a confieldish/fenneszish cool electronic thing into a string section so unassumingly. id kill to see it in the context of the film, b/c a lot of it's really exciting.

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 23 October 2003 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.body-song.com has some clips

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 25 October 2003 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't forget to go out and buy it today!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 27 October 2003 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Australian release is still two weeks away... no word on NZ release, but I will be patient.

Damian (Damian), Monday, 27 October 2003 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the film last month, and the soundtrack was very good, it fitted the flick perfectly. Don't really know how it works on it's own, since most of the "tracks" were clearly made to accompany a particular sequence of scenes.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 27 October 2003 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It's still difficult for me to find it on slsk (for some reason) but I've got most of it now, and yes it is surprisingly great. I'm liking it more than Hail to the Thief, apples and oranges be damned. Better than Lead Us Not into Temptation, too, probably.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Monday, 27 October 2003 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't wait until my copy arrives.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't wait until it comes out in the U.S.!

(importing just seems like too much effort, and probably $$)

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's coming out early next year in the US.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps this is concurrent with a possible Stateside release of the film?

Damian (Damian), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

early next year?! meh! i'm dyin here ...

devilmademedoit (Felcher), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay! My copy arrived today. :)

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 1 November 2003 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It's really, really good. Track 9, Splitter, has got a better groove than the National Anthem.

I want Moon Trills to be reinterpreted as a Radiohead song on their next album - the piano + electronics combine fantastically, and I love that big swell of sound right at the begin.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I took the plunge and ordered this from amazon.co.uk. It was only around 10 quid w/shipping to the U.S., if it actually arrives in a timely manner I will very excited.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine came quite quickly. The Pitchfork review today is awful! Amusing, though. He obviously doesn't have much knowledge of the type of music that inspired the score. Not that that's necessary, but it has been disappointing so far to see that most of the reviews are coming from a sort of Radiohead fan/indie rock fan direction. While all opinions are obviously valid, I do feel like they're really missing something if the closest thing they've ever heard to the record is the score for Requiem for a Dream. I would be really interested in seeing at least one review from someone who isn't really much of a Radiohead fan or at least knows a fair amount about classical music and is thus more in a position to judge how it fares against that.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 7 November 2003 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

This has somehow become inextricably glued to my cd player. Every night I tell myself I'm going to listen to something else and somehow it doesn't end up happening...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 10 November 2003 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of us are just hoping it's going to get a local release...

Edward G. Remix (Damian), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I got this in the mail last night and listened to it twice. It's really cool...none of the reviews have mentioned how great that percussion track with all the phasing is, it's some fascinating shit.

I (predictably) like the two tracks with the jazz group a whole lot as well. I'd love to know what his collaboration process with them was like, and I wish more avant jazz groups were as good at post-production and as willing to completely fuck up their sound.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

six months pass...
I wanted to give this its own thread, but figured it probably wouldn't garner much response.

Still, I think it's cool!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds pretty cool! Thanks for the links, Melissa.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd presume at some point he'd arrange some sort of collaboration or expansion of his work between the two -- and it could be pretty darned cool. Striking news, yes...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The soundtrack sounds good.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Ned, the potential for collaboration is what makes this even cooler. But even if there isn't any, more solo work will be grand! Especially with a full orchestra...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Bodysong, but I like the string quartet tracks the least (that doesn't mean his orchestra won't be good, I'm looking forward to it in fact).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Really? The string quartet stuff is my favorite...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It just seemed like more standard soundtracky fare, and none of it really stuck in my ears. The ones that I remember are the other tracks that had some interesting and fresh way of going about things(the phasing percussion track, the ones with the awesomely post-produced jazz quartet, etc.).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm just a sucker for strings... But it was nice, very Messiaen-esque (rather than Philip Glass-esque...the disappointment would have killed me).

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer the string quarter bits to the jazz bits after a few months of listening to this album. Although my favourite is the one with the different percussion lines that move in and out of synch with each other.

Bad films can have good scores, non?

Melissa W, Saturday, 8 September 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

Jordan, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

No, December 21st apparently.

Streaming here. (click 'score')

Melissa W, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

Hmmmm, the site has a considerably different tracklist...

Sounding good, though!

Simon H., Tuesday, 30 October 2007 23:06 (seventeen years ago)

Um...it's streaming music on the page you linked to, Melissa, but not on the Score section. There, it just says "coming soon".

The streaming music on the main page sounds great though. I can't wait to hear the whole thing.

Z S, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

Should be streaming music on the front page (one song), but the score section SHOULD have the whole thing (I'm listening to it right now!).

Melissa W, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

This is all I get, for both Safari and Firefox:

Z S, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

Any luck yet?

Melissa W, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 00:20 (seventeen years ago)

Nope. I'll try again tomorrow I suppose.

That's so weird, though. When you go to the Score section, what do you see, if not "Coming soon"?
Either way, I'll hear it in a month or so when it comes out anyway.

Z S, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 02:23 (seventeen years ago)

I see a list of tracks and a player. But I think they took it down, now. I'm still listening to it, though... I haven't closed the webpage yet.

Melissa W, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 03:05 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

The There Will Be Blood soundtrack is gorgeous. Mmmm.

Turangalila, Thursday, 15 November 2007 09:27 (seventeen years ago)

There's a track that's basically "Convergence" with an incorporated string section paying hommage to the title track on </i>Universal Consciousness</i>. Beautiful.

Turangalila, Thursday, 15 November 2007 09:32 (seventeen years ago)

one month passes...

scratch that, they took the convergence overdub off, and it sounds even better.

"HW/Hope of New Fields" is too gorgeous for words.

Turangalila, Saturday, 15 December 2007 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

It's not like anyone didn't know I was going to say this, but it's brilliant of course.

Melissa W, Monday, 17 December 2007 09:59 (seventeen years ago)

three weeks pass...

I don't know if I'd call it 'gorgeous' -- there are so many threatening pieces of music -- but did anyone feel that it distracted from the movie at times?

fukasaku tollbooth, Thursday, 10 January 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

all of pta's movies except 'hard eight' have very prominent scores/music, and this one was less obtrusive than 'punch drunk love'. it was still absolutely key to the film -- the first long sequence most obviously. sometimes i felt the music was pulling a lot of weight, but these things are hard to judge. i didn't think it distracted, though -- more like it outshone the film, at points.
