16. young and lovely - blur. pretty much considered to be the blur b- side diamond. for some unknown reason that even the band can't explain 'turn it up' ends up on 'modern life...' instead.

17. miserablism - pet shop boys. again lopped off an album at gone the 11th hour, mainly because of it's stylistic incongruity. and so what went on in it's place ? 'the end of the world'. oh *dear*.

19. John Cale - "Sylvia Says" (I THINK this was a B-Side before it turned up as a bonus track, anyway it's wonderful, one of the great songs about domestic happiness and wanderlust - it's the Moominpappa At Sea of pop!!)

20. Wire - "Former Airline" (I think B Sides were great as opportunities to really dick about.)

21. Chemical Brothers - "Scale" (some scales)

24. Sarah Brightman - "Adventures Beyond The Nurgon Zone" (B-Side to Starship Trooper, has the funniest fade ever committed to vinyl, otherwise it's ghastly but hey, you'll never hear it anyway.)

it might be a little hard to reach a consensus, seeing as most of these songs (with a few major exceptions) aren't particularly iconic. on the other hand, a landslide victory isn't necessarily the most interesting outcome for a poll, and it'd be fun to see which unlikely choices end up getting a good share of votes. I think it's a good idea & I'd definitely participate.

if it does happen, it should probably be limited to the album era, so let's say 1948 onward. "non-album b-side" isn't a meaningful idea if it refers to an era in which long-playing albums didn't exist.

I like the idea.. B-sides aren't supposed to be iconic.

If I conduct it, I may need to help to organize it technically when it comes to voting, but of course I can always start out doing a nominations thread.

I suppose what would be needed as a rule is some way of limiting nominations to obvious b-sides and not double a-sides, for instance "We Can Work It Out" and "Let's Stay The Night Together" obviously don't count even though they were b-sides and not on albums.

While there were obviously lots of great ones on this list, 10CC never made got mentioned, which is a shame. "Get It While You Can", "Waterfall", "Channel Swimmer", "Good News" and "Don't Squeeze Me Like Toothpaste" are all great tracks, now stuck to the reissues.

I could probably name hundreds of famous house/trance/techno/etc tracks that happened to be on the B-side of the 12” (like “Access”, “Solid Session”, “Android”, etc), but I’m assuming these don’t count.

i think i got called a rockist on this thread for not wanting to include remixes. i guess i thought that would be too easy since there are only 5 million remixes on every 12-inch single. i wanted actual songs and not versions of a-sides. so sue me!

I miss the chase for B-Sides but not the expense of all those singles. Are labels still releasing tracks unique to Japanese and other foreign issues?
