i searched to see if there was something similar. i couldn't find it if there was. anyway, no live tracks, no remixes.b-sides from stand-alone singles are okay, i guess.frinstance,if you really like the b-side to new order's ceremony.(stand-alone meaning singles that never appeared on an album) i wanted to start with The Troggs b-side to Wild Thing, "From Home", cuz i love that song, but it does appear on their u.k. debut(but not the american debut), so i won't.
i'm hoping i will see some stuff i didn't know about.all genres welcome.

scott seward, Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

1)Suede-My Dark Star
2)Echo & The Bunnymen-Over Your Shoulder

i'm starting small.

scott seward, Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

How do you square "no remixes" with "all genres welcome" Scott???!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway

3. Pet Shop Boys - Shameless

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

B-sides that are better than some of the tracks on the celebrated debuts of these hotster bands:
- "Alabama Sunshine" - The Rapture
- "Countdown" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

um, i think i mean't no remixes of the actual single. cuz that's cheating.

scott seward, Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

does that make sense?

scott seward, Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

what are we on, six?

6. Beck "Electric Music and the Summer People"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Warner Bros. did two LPs in the 80s "Revenge of the Killer B's" with non-album b-sides: (Although I think some subsequently made it onto LPs or EPs?)

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll

1. Cool Water performed by Fleetwood Mac - 3:22
2. Somebody Like You performed by Marshall Crenshaw - 3:14
3. Sometimes I Wish I Was Dead performed by Depeche Mode - 2:15
4. Post Office performed by Rank and File - 1:47
5. Moon 83 performed by The B-52's - 4:00
6. Money performed by The Pretenders - 4:39
7. I Wish You Wouldn't Say That performed by The Talking Heads - 2:53
8. Way Out and Up We Go performed by Echo And The Bunnymen - 3:58
9. Your Finest Hour performed by Tom Verlaine - 2:30
10. You Had No Intention performed by Kid Creole & The Coconuts - 4:57
11. Ain't No Big Deal performed by Madonna - 4:12
12. Set the Killing Free performed by Aztec Camera - 3:45

--------
The only song I remember from the first one was "Walking the Dog" - Laurie Anderson.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

7. The Cure "Play"
8. Siouxsie "Tattoo"

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

So add to the official list:
9. Way Out and Up We Go - Echo And The Bunnymen

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

7. Boo Radleys - Blues For George Michael
8. Aphex Twin - Flim

dog latin, Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Scott, I was being picky but I'd still plea to include remixes - I mean how many great reggae B-Sides are there that AREN'T versions of the A?

A couple more -

Spice Girls - "Take Me Home"
Pulp - "Ansaphone"

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

12? Gang Starr feat. Nice & Smooth - DWYCK

(although that might have appeared on a later album, and definitely appeared on the greatest hits album, but it was just expected to be a B-side and there weren't any plans to put it on any albums until after it blew up, so I think it counts.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

14. Britney Spears - "Autumn Goodbye" (Britney doing really sunny bubblegum, not much like any of her famous tracks, a shame she didn't do more tunes like this I think)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

15. 17 days - prince. due to be on the 'purple rain' album (it even says so on the single) but lopped off at the last minute. absolutely fantastic. the best b side of all time.

16. young and lovely - blur. pretty much considered to be the blur b- side diamond. for some unknown reason that even the band can't explain 'turn it up' ends up on 'modern life...' instead.

17. miserablism - pet shop boys. again lopped off an album at gone the 11th hour, mainly because of it's stylistic incongruity. and so what went on in it's place ? 'the end of the world'. oh *dear*.

piscesboy, Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

18. Julian Cope - "Hey High Class Butcher" (quiet and scary whispering pop against meat-eating)

19. John Cale - "Sylvia Says" (I THINK this was a B-Side before it turned up as a bonus track, anyway it's wonderful, one of the great songs about domestic happiness and wanderlust - it's the Moominpappa At Sea of pop!!)

20. Wire - "Former Airline" (I think B Sides were great as opportunities to really dick about.)

21. Chemical Brothers - "Scale" (some scales)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

22. ABBA - "Should I Laugh Or Cry" (HOW COULD I FORGET THIS!! Portrait of a woman trapped in an unhappy marriage, very compassionate which is probably why it's forgotten, doesn't fit the ABBA idea of horrible ex-husbands giving cruel lyrics to divorced wives - one of their best lyrics, up there with Day Before You Came in my book, Tico says check it out!)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

23. The Human League - "Tom Baker" (Canonical 'great B-Side', actually it's just an OK instrumental but it deserves a placing because it's the Human League!! Doing a song called "Tom Baker"!!)

24. Sarah Brightman - "Adventures Beyond The Nurgon Zone" (B-Side to Starship Trooper, has the funniest fade ever committed to vinyl, otherwise it's ghastly but hey, you'll never hear it anyway.)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

25. Soft Cell - "Facility Girls 12"" (B-Side to Bedsitter, useless on the 7" but the 12" is creepy and desolate and very hard to write about.)

(OK I'll stop now and go to the pub.)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

26. Talk Talk - it's getting late in the evening

jed (jed_e_3), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

pedantic question - are the following eligible:

1. b-sides that never appeared on an album until a "Singles A's and B's" LP collecting them all together appeared?

2. b-sides added a bonus tracks to CD reissues of albums?

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

27. Cherry - Smashing Pumpkins
28. Apathy's Last Kiss - Smashing Pumpkins
29. The Aeroplane Flies High - Smashing Pumpkins
30. Polyethylene parts 1 & 2 - Radiohead
31. Palo Alto - Radiohead
32. Punchdrunk Lovesick Singalong - Radiohead

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i gotcha, Tico. but it makes it more interesting to have a list of seperate songs. although, a dub/instrumental/remix list would be great too. if i could just remember which version of inner city's "Good Life" is my favorite.

scott seward, Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

zebedee, if a b-side shows up later on something else, that's fine.(on comps or box sets or best-ofs or even added to the album later as a bonus)but it should have shown up on the actual single first to count as a b. ( or a c or a d since most singles now are more like e.p.'s)

scott seward, Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

33-Bananarama-Ghost
34-Bananarama-Give Us Back Our Cheap Fares

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Belle and Sebastian to thread !

Sami (Sami), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

bowie - the awesome remade version of 'holy holy' -- it was the b-side of the diamond dogs single (1974) and should've made it onto an album! (it was included at the end the rykodisc of 'the man who sold the world' but sadly the rykos were deleted in favor of those awful virgin releases

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Pet Shop Boys and The Cure own this thread.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 October 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Turtles Have Short Legs by Can.

I don't know where it's from originally.

Cherry Red put it on a 12" w/ Moonshake and One More Night

And I borrowed it from Jeremy Campbell.

And it's the best song ever.

It may be on one of the Cannibalism comps

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Pavement, "Harness Yr Hopes"

73 The Inner Light - Beatles

I think that's all of them.

billstevejim, Thursday, 16 October 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Live tracks and remixes should be eligible. The live version of "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" on the flipside to "I Want you" is the best B-Side ever and it doesn't count??? Same with the Zero 7 remix of "Climbing Up the Walls"??? This is bullshit.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 16 October 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Endgame - David Sylvian and Robert Fripp
Home Of The Whale - Massive Attack
Poot Face Boogie - Frank Zappa & The Mothers

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 5 November 2007 02:37 (eighteen years ago)

<i>425. They Might Be Giants - Nightgown of the Sullen Moon.</i>

So manifestly OTM as to bear repeating.

REM has tons of great B-sides but instead of these, some of which have been seen above, I nominate

484. Pavement -- Camera

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 5 November 2007 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

485. Ash - No Place to Hide

Simon H., Monday, 5 November 2007 04:04 (eighteen years ago)

even though it has since been added to the reissues, this one towers above all

486. fleetwood mac - silver springs

electricsound, Monday, 5 November 2007 04:05 (eighteen years ago)

487. MX-80 Sound, "White Night"

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 5 November 2007 05:57 (eighteen years ago)

this might be the best B-sides of all time (all from one EP):

488. Hi falutin - the Boo Radleys
489. Crushed - the Boo Radleys
490. Almost Nearly There - the Boo Radleys

Bee OK, Monday, 5 November 2007 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

491. Roxy Music - "Trash 2"

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 5 November 2007 06:07 (eighteen years ago)

495. Ash - Coasting

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 5 November 2007 08:58 (eighteen years ago)

(From the Down on the Upside sessions, and miles better than any song on the actual album.)

MacDara, Monday, 5 November 2007 09:15 (eighteen years ago)

497. TV On The Radio - Satellite.

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 5 November 2007 09:24 (eighteen years ago)

498. Guillemots - Cat's Eyes.
499. Guillemots - Bad Boyfriend.

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 5 November 2007 09:24 (eighteen years ago)

500. Smashing Pumpkins - "Set the Ray To Jerry"

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 5 November 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

And we're done.

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 5 November 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

You mean "The Pride and the Pain"?

yeah, that one. Pyjamarama was the A-side but still not on LP, hence my confusion.

sleeve, Monday, 5 November 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

500 is a dupe of 106. I demand an additional greatest non-album b-side.

lukas, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 06:08 (eighteen years ago)

Ok fuck it:

500. Curtis Chip - It Starts With A G

lukas, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 06:21 (eighteen years ago)

also all the unmentioned Nirvana b-sides heh - Pen cap chew in particular

CaptainLorax, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 07:50 (eighteen years ago)

or maybe thats just an unreleased song and I'm confusing that with b-sides.

CaptainLorax, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 07:56 (eighteen years ago)

three years pass...

As there are obviously way more than 500 worthy ones, would this be an idea for a bigger ILM poll?

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Monday, 14 February 2011 01:56 (fourteen years ago)

it might be a little hard to reach a consensus, seeing as most of these songs (with a few major exceptions) aren't particularly iconic. on the other hand, a landslide victory isn't necessarily the most interesting outcome for a poll, and it'd be fun to see which unlikely choices end up getting a good share of votes. I think it's a good idea & I'd definitely participate.

uncle twikkelingssteurnissen (unregistered), Monday, 14 February 2011 02:13 (fourteen years ago)

if it does happen, it should probably be limited to the album era, so let's say 1948 onward. "non-album b-side" isn't a meaningful idea if it refers to an era in which long-playing albums didn't exist.

uncle twikkelingssteurnissen (unregistered), Monday, 14 February 2011 02:17 (fourteen years ago)

I like the idea.. B-sides aren't supposed to be iconic.

billstevejim, Monday, 14 February 2011 02:34 (fourteen years ago)

uncle twikkelingssteurnissen (unregistered), Monday, 14 February 2011 05:38 (fourteen years ago)

If I conduct it, I may need to help to organize it technically when it comes to voting, but of course I can always start out doing a nominations thread.

I suppose what would be needed as a rule is some way of limiting nominations to obvious b-sides and not double a-sides, for instance "We Can Work It Out" and "Let's Stay The Night Together" obviously don't count even though they were b-sides and not on albums.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Monday, 14 February 2011 13:32 (fourteen years ago)

twelve years pass...

While there were obviously lots of great ones on this list, 10CC never made got mentioned, which is a shame. "Get It While You Can", "Waterfall", "Channel Swimmer", "Good News" and "Don't Squeeze Me Like Toothpaste" are all great tracks, now stuck to the reissues.

The GeirBot (Geir Hongro), Friday, 21 July 2023 20:04 (two years ago)

Geirbot! Rock on, brother.

scott seward, Friday, 21 July 2023 20:18 (two years ago)

I could probably name hundreds of famous house/trance/techno/etc tracks that happened to be on the B-side of the 12” (like “Access”, “Solid Session”, “Android”, etc), but I’m assuming these don’t count.

Siegbran, Friday, 21 July 2023 21:12 (two years ago)

Seigbran! Rock on, brother.

scott seward, Saturday, 22 July 2023 17:09 (two years ago)

i think i got called a rockist on this thread for not wanting to include remixes. i guess i thought that would be too easy since there are only 5 million remixes on every 12-inch single. i wanted actual songs and not versions of a-sides. so sue me!

scott seward, Saturday, 22 July 2023 17:50 (two years ago)

I meant not so much remixes, but 12 inches with different tracks on the A and B side, but where the one on the B-side became the hit, like this one: https://www.discogs.com/master/104109-DJ-Misjah-Groovehead-DJ-Misjah-DJ-Tim-X-Trax-Vol-1 where the track “Access” on the B-side became a massive hit.

Siegbran, Sunday, 23 July 2023 00:09 (two years ago)

"In The City" by Madness also seems to be missing here.

The GeirBot (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 10 August 2023 00:48 (two years ago)

XTC haven't been mentioned in 20 years, they could fill out a killer double LP of their best B-Sides.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 10 August 2023 01:45 (two years ago)

Really? Recs?

calstars, Thursday, 10 August 2023 01:47 (two years ago)

Thanks!

calstars, Thursday, 10 August 2023 17:34 (two years ago)

I'd add "Wait Till Your Boat Goes Down", although I gather a lot of XTC fans regard it as a sell-out attempt.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 11 August 2023 19:34 (two years ago)

...though it's not a b-side.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 11 August 2023 19:36 (two years ago)

The thread title says non-album b-sides, so I went for both.

The problem is that I think "Boat" is a total bore. I have no idea why they thought it was single-worthy.

Hideous Lump, Friday, 11 August 2023 21:38 (two years ago)

My personal b-sides POXX. Would be surprised if any of these have not been mentioned itt

nashwan, Saturday, 12 August 2023 17:24 (two years ago)

Talk Talk’s “Without You” is stunning. I love The Patty’s Over, particularly side 1 of it, and it would have fit on it.

beamish13, Saturday, 12 August 2023 17:30 (two years ago)

You’re right sleeve. Somehow in my head it had become Wings/Kicker Conspiracy

Kicker and guest informant on one list might be too much stomp-fall anyway

realistic pillow (Jon not Jon), Saturday, 12 August 2023 19:35 (two years ago)

I miss the chase for B-Sides but not the expense of all those singles. Are labels still releasing tracks unique to Japanese and other foreign issues?
