Now We Write Instead!

An increasing number of eighties and early-nineties popstars are now writing for the popstars of today; Andy MCClusky, Nik Kershaw and Cathy Dennis are examples. But is any of their new work any good? It all seems to be vastly inferior to their recorded work to my ears. Or is this only because their new songs are recorded by the likes of Steps & Atomic Kitten?

Don't forget Betty Boo, she writes for Hear'say!

jel, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i never forget Betty Boo

"Whole Again" is better than about half the OMD singles, and is MUCH better than "Eternal Flame".

Tom, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Betty Boo also writes for the Tweenies, which is strangely appropriate

Taking Sides: Betty Boo vs Irving Berlin

mark s, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did Irving Berlin ever Do The Do? I think NOT! Therefore Betty Boo is victorious.

Who writes for Steps. Steps are good. Although possibly past their glory days.

Bill, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doesn't that kid who appeared in a Madonna clip (and later on presented the Tube????) write songs now?

nathalie, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lies! Eternal Flame is brilliant!

Sterling Clover, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sterling speaks the truth.

You are both SICK SICK SICK, people. Not only was it the crappiest Bangles single, but the remake is anonymous fodder bullcrap. I was just in the UK, I saw and heard performances on the TV, I FELT PAIN.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Susannah Hoffs spent so much time looking out of the corner of her eye, I often wondered if she bumped into streetlamps on a regular basis.

Dickon Edwards, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whilst in Prague we had Viva TV and they kept playing eternal flame and geri's it's raining men back to back. Believe me, it was nothing short of gorgeous compared to the geri monster. and anyway, it is quite!

Bill, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Eternal Flame is probably the worst song Suzanne Vega ever wrote, and I've not even heard anything else by her. I like the Atomic Kitten one more. They wear white clothes.

Greg, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Suzanne Vega? Confusing your eighties American radio stars there, Greg. My name is Luka, I live on the midprice shelf.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Suzanne Vega wrote it.

Greg, Saturday, 25 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Eternal Flame" credited to Susanna Hoffs/Billy Steinberg/Thomas Kelly. It doesn't even *sound* like a Vega song...

Michael Jones, Saturday, 25 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, it doesn't in the slightest - BUT it is grate (as is SV).

the pinefox, Sunday, 26 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just because it's credited to Hoffs doesn't mean Vega didn't write it. Will someone please spot what I'm trying to say here?

Greg, Sunday, 26 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

are you trying to say that eternal flame sounds like it could have been written by susan vega?

jel, Sunday, 26 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that one way or another (vega vs hoffs/hoffs vs greg/regina vs pinefox) we have a LAWSUIT on our hands, tho sadly not involving cocaine this time, unless the pinefox one turns out more outre than expected...

mark s, Sunday, 26 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll put you out of my misery. The Kitten were on telly (possibly SM:tv - can't remember) and one of then (again, since they've been genetically modified to look exactly the same apart from the fucking rough one with the big mouth, I can't remember which) said: "We heard the song and decided that we were going to do it and we met Suzanne Vega, who wrote it, and she said she really liked our version."

Suzanne Vega wrote it.

Greg, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

three years pass...
what? those weren't cheerleading pics!

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Sunday, 6 March 2005 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

can we get an independent source for the "suzanne vega wrote eternal flame" claim? because that's kind of earth-shaking news for me, to be honest. "eternal flame" was just about the first non-children's song i remember liking! and i'm a big suzanne vega fan to this day (minus her boring last album).

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 6 March 2005 05:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Confusing Vega with Hoffs.

"Our manager got in touch with the lead singer of the Bangles, Suzanne Vega, and she said she thought our version was really cool." (Here)

the todster (the todster), Sunday, 6 March 2005 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

haha. ok. i got excited there for a second.
