Please let there be more than two responses to this, k?

oops (Oops), Friday, 17 October 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

does the mighty two stuff count?

maree (maree), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I was wondering that myself, too.
Sure why not? It's not like there's already a specific Mighty Two thread out there.

oops (Oops), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

So...right now I'm listening to No Bones for the Dogs(Pressure Sounds), credited to Joe Gibss and the Proffesionals. Love it. One of my favorite reggae albums/collectios/whathaveyou. Errol's mixing on it can stand up to any Tubby stuff. Some pretty heavy, wild dubs on it, yet there's still extremely sugary and melodic moments.

oops (Oops), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

its a hard one cos often i'm not sure if its mighty two or just joe gibbs...gibbs as producer tends to get the credit whilst thompson is neglected as just the engineer? i dunno.

but search: under heavy manners - prince far i

gaz (gaz), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Under Heavy Manners, yes (and I know I have to say this every time but search the vinyl pressing with the colour sleeve and the extra little half minute of dub at the end... then send it to me).

Gibson was more of an executive producer wasn't he (i.e. he had paid music guys to do most of the actual music bits: first Perry then Niney then Errol T)?

In which case search that amazing run of LPs Gibbs cut on Dennis Brown, and if you want one song search "Three Meals A Day" of "Joseph's Coat of Many Colours".

Tim (Tim), Friday, 17 October 2003 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard the same about Gibbs. Kinda like Coxsone, no? ie he had others run the actual studio but would have the final word/veto power.

Blood & FIre re-issued Joseph's Coat of Many Colours earlier this year with a bunch of bonus tracks and surprise surprise the sound quality of it is superb

oops (Oops), Friday, 17 October 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes like Coxsone though I always think that Studio 1 managed to retain a certain sound across the various musical directors (or whatever you want to call them).

I missed the Brown reissue, must go and find that. The other LPs from around that time (Words Of Wisdom, Visions, Wolf and Leopard) are pretty much as good. Wolf and Leopard sounds as though Perry, Niney and Errol T were all heavily involved, to me.

I've been looking for this forever, does anyone know where I can find a copy (on a comp wd be fine)? http://www.culturereggae.net/Lb20.JPG

Tim (Tim), Friday, 17 October 2003 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

search: dub at randys set on blood & fire. plenty mind wrecking versions of java, but the track that kills me is extraordinary dub.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that the track that has Bingy Bunny or someone doing all that whistling? And the "you can't play bass" breakdown thing, like "Skank In Bed"? That's genius.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

the rhythym track is fairly straight, but it has fx like someone just has a length of tape and is pulling it past the heads

gaz (gaz), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Cor that sounds good. Sorry abt the size of that image btw, I have images turned off and I didn't realise what a monster it is.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 17 October 2003 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

just sorry i can't help you there tim.

did anyone see this twanboc brag? scroll down. makes me drool stupidly. i'm sure he's got that tune somewhere.

also this thread makes me realise i should get the african dub discs by gibbs/et. shame i'm broke.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 17 October 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah (I think this link might work better)http://www.hollowearth.org/2003_09_07_oldcrap.html#10630694964470811

Lots of records I don't ever expect to see or hear, it's a tragedy. My brother's assiduously collected car-boot collection of several hundred vintage 45s is bewildering enough...

Tim (Tim), Friday, 17 October 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

*ears go up, sits on back legs, starts panting*

yer brother didn't ever do a similar thing then Tim?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 17 October 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

haha no, sorry. He might at some point but neither of us are librarian enough to do that sort of thing, I'm afraid. If that changes I'll let you know.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 17 October 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

haha too...you know i AM a librarian?

and i probably wouldn't do it either. not that boot sales here ever have any vintage reggae 45's (i own, maybe, 4)

still, oops, more than 2 responses, eh?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 17 October 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the 'Dub From Randy's' CD best. Don't know the titles but the one I particularly like has a lady vocalist. That *was* a big photo, Tim. Was it from your personal collection of photos of your record labels? There is a *version* of something by Bo Jangles on that 'No Bones for the Dogs' compilation, but I don't know what - possibly the 'Two Sevens Clash' one. Excuse my vagueness. I prefer the Carpenters these days. The Dennis Brown reissue is called 'The Promised Land' and claims to be a self-production, with E.T. cunningly left out of the credits. Unless of course it's a different one. I like the recent Joe Gibbs Productions compilation with Nigger Kojak on it more than 'No Bones for the Dogs'.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the title of that one, PJ?

also this thread makes me realise i should get the african dub discs by gibbs/et. shame i'm broke.

big ditto. They're pretty hard to find, too, at least here in the US. Just searched for them and only found one place that had 'em in stock: $35 per disc!!.

oops (Oops), Friday, 17 October 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It says 'Soul Jazz Records Presents Joe Gibbs Productions - Roots Culture, DJs and The Birth of Dancehall' and the number is SJR CD76. There are track(s) form the African Dub series.
