It's not even so much them working with the army to recruit the "urban" audience, it's the way the Source guy talks about "delivering the audience" to the Army, like hip hop fans are cattle to be sold to the highest bidder. Yuck - I used to think the Source was a great magazine back in the day.

"I want them to say, 'The Army was here--the Army is cool!'"

I'm sure you overhear that alot in the streets of Iraq these days!

I suddenly get the mental image of some b-boy gangsta wannabe telling his drill seargent "Yo Yo Yo, Gee. Y'all gotta jus drop this yellin' and shit. Know what I'm sayin'? Just chill, dog. Chill like chilli willi. Aight?"

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Friday, 17 October 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I suddenly get the exact opposite mental image--some drill sgt. trying to ape hip-hop slang in order to be down. I can't even conjure the language but I can sure conjure the hand movements.

All you need to do is change the emphases slightly on the chorus of DMX's "Party Up" and you have a marching cadence. Try it!

The military is teaming up with hip-hop bible the Source to recruit black urban kids with pimped-out Hummers and off-da-hook merchandise.

If the hummer actually DID roll into an urban neighborhood, it might be missing a few hubcaps by the end of the day: "Camoflage Kangols? Don't need the damn Army for that!"

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 18 October 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

off-da-hook I can give or take. If it were off-da-chain, then it might be worth considering.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 18 October 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely all merchandise is off the hook? Unless it was stored on a shelf.
