Inspied by Dr C's thread on The Passage I dug out my copy of pillows and prayers and was amazed by how much good stuff was on it, Felt, Tracey Thorn, Thomas Leer etc.
It also seems to me to be a strand of music which has been entirely overlooked, ripe for re-assessment perhaps?

I keep finding odd and strange stuff on that there label -- Dave Cavanagh's book on Creation actually talks a bit about its early history, including the Mike Alway connection, about which I'm sure Momus can go into more detail. Most recent thing I got was the double disc Fuzzbox collection/reissue/whatever.

Search: Marine Girls (oh yes), early Alien Sex Fiend (okay, it's Anagram, but it's part of the whole semi-psuedo-empire) and indeed both Felt and Momus. And Eyeless in Gaza, so ha.

Destroy: no names come immediately to mind, probably because I've avoided them

If I'm making the right label associations, then I'd add:

Search: McCarthy, the Monochrome Set, and Blind Mr. Jones.

Destroy: Stan, Mexico 70.

Random associations: (a) Aren't the also responsible for some stuff like the Not Sensibles and some Spizz project or other? (b) What's the name of that second-string Slowdive-y shoegazer band that showed up on so many of their comps? (c) I'm just now trying to make up my mind about Louis Phillipe.

I think you answered your own shoegaze question there, Nitsuh -- Blind Mr. Jones. ;-) No, actually I like them a lot for the first album -- second album, deep distress! But thank you for reminding me of them and McCarthy, and somebody somewhere else mentioned the Charlottes, also an enjoyable bunch.

Did anyone hear the Mr Swenson record 'The Sensuous Man' I put out on my Analog Baroque imprint of Cherry Red? That was lyrically and sonically perhaps the most extreme record ever made.

And I want to know your impressions of my friend Louis Philippe, Nitsuh. He's extremely intelligent and talented, some of his records take the Beach Boys' Chamber Pop formula into realms we might call 'exquisite', yet there's something -- hmm, what's the word? Unctuous? Fustian? -- about them. He comes on like the pop equivalent of a wine snob. And what does it mean when a Frenchman buys into the mythology of England more than the English themselves do? What values are getting celebrated?

Just found a copy of tha Nightingales EP with "Son of God's Mate" and "Which Hi-Fi?" on it. Definitely their best work, and goes nicely with my treasured vinyl copies of their first two albums.

On a slightly related tack, anyone remember Yeah Yeah Noh? (Yes, I know they weren't on Cherry Red!) I was surprised to see that there's a CD compilation of their stuff available now. I saw it in Sister Ray. I do't have title, label etc details, but no doubt this info is out there somewhere. Cue DJ Martian!

Cherry Red has taken over from Rhino as the ultimate compilers. Their C86-C89 3CD sets are great and they just put out "1977: The Year That Punk Broke" which highlights all sorts of gems from that year. Anyone know if they're planning on continuing the yearly overviews?

THey seem to be an umbrella group that has a few really good reissue labels under it. Got Esoteric, Grapefruit, and about 5 others, possibly more. Grapefruit have been doing some great psych and prog 3cds for the last few years.
