So I heard the first Cure song that I liked

"Pictures of You" (from the HP ad) -- the first time Robert Smith stays unobtrusive enough for me to hear the pretty guitars.

Where do I go from here?

"from the HP ad"

This phrase makes me so unhappy I can't quite express my pain.

But to answer the question: get Disintegration, the album from which "PoY" cometh - you'll not find Robert too "intrusive" on any of its wonderful tracks.

I'll second Disintegration. Lots of arena-goth prettiness on it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 19 October 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

most everyone would probably agree that disintegration was the cure's biggest achievement. The thing that struck me about that ad (I'm over feeling like people sold out when I hear their music on ads, btw, anyway the cure aren't the walkmen or anything) is how strange it was to hear the Cure, of all people, because Smith's voice is so weird if you aren't familiar with it. Twelve years ago I never would have imagined anyone would think his voice sounded good enough to push computer peripherals because you'd think most of the world would switch off. I guess that says who they're selling stuff to now.

i like 'close to me'

astroblaster (astroblaster), Sunday, 19 October 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

the version in the ad is the remix on Mixed Up... never did much for me.

Aaron A., Sunday, 19 October 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked that remix. And I would say more, but not today. I'm surprised I'm still coherent.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 October 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"Close to Me" and "Why Can't I Be You" are the two I think I like. I know I definitely like Close to Me. One time I liked Killing an Arab but I don't know if I'd like it if I heard it again.

i had a real moment when i saw that ad too. my brain knew what it was, but it wouldn't tell me because it thought i would be mad, but i was like no, brain, it's OK. what a great song. and yes, disintegration is epic.

i can't hear you over my hair dryer.

Jughead Jones (jugjead), Monday, 20 October 2003 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

the version in the ad is the remix on Mixed Up...

No it isn't! It's the single mix, which is slightly different from the album version but not drastically so. (The version on _Mixed Up_ is the deeply excellent dub remix where the entire rhythm section is swapped out for that dub rhythm used by Cibo Matto on "Sugar Water" with the guitars and vocal layered over the top with hints of the original bass line dropped in here and there.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 October 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Personally, I am ecstatic that I live in a society where people think that the lyrics "Looking so long at these pictures of you/But never held on to your heart/Looking so long for the words to be true/But always just breaking apart my pictures of you" can sell digital cameras.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 October 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you tried "The Head on the Door"? It's poppy early-mid period Cure and it's patchy but has some great stuff.

Also, "Hot Hot Hot". Whoot!

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 20 October 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Check also the singles comps (_Standing On A Beach/Staring At The Sea_, _Galore_, _Greatest Hits_).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 October 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

you should try the new Rapture album.

JasonD (JasonD), Monday, 20 October 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha JasonD is OTM

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 October 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Those Ratpure ads were everywhere in UK tubes much like the Basement Jaxx ones. For a second I felt like ILX had taken over the advertising there in general.

Anyway, Dan being me when it comes to the Cure (ie, we're right and those who disagree on their worth are poxy fules), follow his recommendations thusly. Also, watch or even just listen to Trilogy and note how fantastic studio versions can sound even better live in some cases one or two decades after the fact.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 October 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i was all excited when i first heard "pictures of you" cause i thought i'd found a great "new" band to explore, but i never ended up liking anything by them i like nearly as much as that one song. i still love it though.
