I'm looking to find some examples of bands members who were not the lead singers that went on to start their own great solo careers.

S: Brian Eno

John Cale

Do we count occassional lead singers like (S) Kim Deal? Or stupid shit like (D) Mike + The Mechanics.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 20 October 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Daniel Ash, erstwhile guitarist of Bauhaus, managed a nice little career with Tones On Tail, Love & Rockets and his own solo stuff outside of the the Bauhaushold.

does blixa count?

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 20 October 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Joan Jett

Destroy: Ace Frehley of Kiss. "Rock Soldiers" by Frehley's Comet could quite possibly be the most embarassing piece of music ever recorded.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 20 October 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Destroy: Phil Collins
Search: Foo Fighters "Everlong" (ie, better than any Nirvana song)

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 October 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the word on James Iha's album? I heard it was all pastoral and sweet...

Also, Rachel Goswell, bass in Mojave 3/guitar in Slowdive, is due for a solo album in the very early spring.

derrick (derrick), Monday, 20 October 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

johnny x of kenickie's career as J Xaverre has been pretty good so far

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 20 October 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

S: Mark Nelson aka Pan American, from Labradford.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 20 October 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone heard Melissa Auf Der Maur's solo work yet (not Fairies Wear Boots, the actual solo stuff)?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 20 October 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: David Pajo

Lead guitarist of Slint who went on to play bass/guitar with Tortoise, Royal Trux and Stereolab (think about that for a second: Tortoise, Royal Trux and Stereolab) before forming his own band: M/Aerial M/Papa M that morphed from post-rock bleepbloop into dry, dusty weird-americana.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 20 October 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Pajo is one of my favorite musicians people evah.

johnny fever (johnny fever), Monday, 20 October 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: Foo Fighters "Everlong" (ie, better than any Nirvana song)

I'll agree with that, actually. (That said, "Everlong" is the best Foo Fighters song, or at least, their best single, since I don't own any of the albums.)

Re: Pajo's resume: You forgot Zwan!!! (And King Kong!) But I dunno, I sorta feel like he's aping Will Oldham too much now.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Search George Harrison, All Things Must Pass
Keith Richards released some solo work around the late 80s/early 90s, don't know if it's any good.
Also search Phil Judd's various post-Split Enz projects.

From indierock:
Search the first Belly album and Andrew Brough/Bike (ex-Straitjacket Fits).
Mixed feelings about Sebadoh and Lou Barlow's other post-Dinosaur Jr projects.
Haven't heard Spiral Stairs/Preston School of Industry, Tobin Sprout/Bevil Web.
Destroy the Music Tapes, Steve West/Marble Valley.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

S: Ed Kuepper (Saints)

Jeff Wright, Tuesday, 21 October 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

S: John Frusciante's first solo record.
D: John Entwistle's solo records.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Kevin Tihista, but only his first album.

dlp9001, Tuesday, 21 October 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

S: Jimi Hendrix, of the Isley Brothers

John Fredland (jfredland), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Slash's Snakepit? - Did he sing in that?
Or are we only talking about formidable solo careers? Seems there are an infinite number of band members who were fired or quit to start a new band. And backup singers launching solo careers could take awhile too.

Search: Chris Mars

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Good call on Chris Mars!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Marianna Ritchey, former drummer/backing vocalist for Dear Nora is now the singer/songwriter in The Badger King which is one of the best bands out there.

Kevin Erickson, Tuesday, 21 October 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Brian May released two great singles after the death of Freddie Mercury. Sadly the album didn't hold up at all.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The James Iha record was, indeed, all pastoral and sweet - one stand-out track, the rest a bit dull, really. So search "jealousy", destroy the rest of, er, whatever it was called.

cis (cis), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Do backup singers count? Because if so, Mariah Carey completely wins this.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Robert Wyatt

Prude (Prude), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Brian McKnight, too.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

How about that Dee Dee Ramone rap album, guys?

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a funky guy, I got funky bones, I'm a funky guy, my name is Dee Dee Ramone - well alright - I'm a funky guy. Fu fu fu fu fu fu fu fu funky.

..Gawd yes - classic.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

um do we count jazz musicians

no i didn't think so.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, the band set up in jazz bands is different. Lead singers aren't so much the stars compared to the band leaders, or soloists. I'm mainly looking for people that got their start as backing up someone else who then in the future went and became the attention of the spotlight.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Neil Young!

Can't believe I forgot to say Mick Ronson. There are days when I like his albums better than anything by Bowie from the same period.
