I like the Von Bondies

Always have. Half of "Lack of Communication" is absolutely classic, way better than Elephant (whoomp!), and live they are incredible- a mix of James Brown showmanship and teenage (though they are all in their early 20s) sass. Is there a new album in the works? I remember that they were unsigned for a while.

adaml (adaml), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, they're all almost thirty. They got signed to Sire, and their new album is out in spring of next year.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 21 October 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I, on the other side of the spectrum, can't bring myself to do so.

This is the thread where I demonstrate my new found maturity by diplomatically holding my tongue.

*blows a childish raspberry*

adaml (adaml), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

maturity sucks! ;)

"This cube of tofu is better than that cube of tofu."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

fine.

enough with the tofu already.

adaml (adaml), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

But the tofuties have leather jackets and play wacky looking silvertone guitars.

The Von Bondies shagged my sister! Kill them all!

(Wait, that's not true, not all of them.)

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Von Bondies too!

I am puzzled by your comments 'though Kate - why should we kill one / some / all of them for shagging your sister?

Did your sister not want to be shagged by him / her / them; was she just disappointed by his / her / their sexual performance; or did he / she / promise to call your sister afterwards and never did?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a joke, Stewart!

In all sorts of karate films and other films with a high degree of codified tribal morality and bloodfeuds, etc. etc. the typical insult/reason for the blood feud goes something along the lines of "You shagged my sister! You have offended my honour! Now you must die!"

Apparently they are very nice people or my sister wouldn't have dated one of them.

ANYWAY! Enough trying to make jokes, so back to the Viking thread with me.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The first album is amazing, and their bassist, Carrie, is utterly lovely, and live they kick ass. But Jason, the singer/guitarist, is an odd one... Basically he seems to get a kick out of treating the people who've done a great deal to get his band where they are today like shit, and badmouth them every chance he gets (cf Jack White, though there are many more and worse examples). He also has an, um, interesting approach/ideal towards women, even more fucked-up and a helluva lot more vindictive and unhealthy than Jack White's. He's an asshole, basically, though a hugely talented one - i tried to get this across in my Careless Talk feature, that Lack Of Communication is one of the most thrilling experiences of self-aggrandising assholism ever commited to disk, like Afghan Whigs' 'Gentlemen' minus the self-awareness and sense of critical irony. i sincerely doubt he can replicate or top Lack Of Communication, though i'd love to see him pull it off.

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Do people really get into this stuff?

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

after attending a pretty packed show in ann arbor a coupla weeks ago, i can say that, yes.

Despite whatever rumours of what they may otherwise do, the band members(Jason & Don especially) have always been very nice & friendly to me, and I've not a thing bad to say about them.

Don's old band Mazinga played in my basement 3 years ago. Jason's older brother Eric runs a great guitar store out of his house in detroit, and is one of the key members of a great band.

still, it'll be interesting to see what they'll be able to do with a record on Sire.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm interviewing the Von Bondies on Thursday and find myself in the unusual position of having somehow not heard a solitary note of music they've recorded or performed.

The new album, Pawn Shoppe Heart, is apparently out early 2004, preceded by a single called "C'mon C'mon".

All thoughts and ruminations on the subject of this band will be lapped up like so much spilt milk.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 3 November 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Errrmmmm, they're currently embroiled in a White Stripes situation, apparently Jack said they were wankers and something like that. Will probably annoy the hell out of them if you ask them about it though.
And er,, i quite liked "It Came From Japan"

Sorry Charlie. I do my best.

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Monday, 3 November 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, where did you spting from? Post more, damn you!

ILM, meet Kate. Kate...ILM. She lovely.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 3 November 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"It Came From Japan" is the only song of theirs I enjoy. And it's a tribute to Guitar Wolf, apparently!

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Monday, 3 November 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything online I can listen to? slsk not being helpful due to my clockwork pc.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 3 November 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"No sugar mama" is a pretty decent song, too.

Apparently their new album is less bluesy, which is kind of a pity.

cis (cis), Monday, 3 November 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

they were great when i saw them live, not so into the record...though the hidden track on the "communication" cd is great

pretty gun clubby & cute

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 3 November 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Two summer's ago I saw them live at the Taste Fest. They were pretty standard, nothing over the top, but then it was during the middle of the day and outside. Jack White was in the crowd. I said hello and all that. Very affable the whole way through.

Saw the drummer this past summer at a Wilco show, and he was pretty cool as well.

David Allen, Monday, 3 November 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, last chance, kids - interviewing the whole band at 4pm today.

New album's pretty fine, soulful garage action.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you talk to my sister while she was here, Chuck, or was that when you were still down under?

If Jack White hates them, it's cause he used to date one of them. ::rolls eyes::

Citizen Kate (kate), Thursday, 6 November 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't even know you had a sister, truth be told. So that'll be a "no", I guess.
