(actually, I don't know if it was really the best, but I'd be shocked if they don't make the top ten)

I believe Frank Kogan would vote for L'Trimm, *Drop That Bottom.*

I might agree with him or might not. The Real Roxanne's first album and Schooly D's first two would definitely be in the running.

Willy Dee - Controversy

of course

Right artist, wrong album:

Low End Theory

However, I agree that this is a hopelessly broad question.

Debito (Debito), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Kinda like asking who was the best president between 1809 and 1985 .... a whole huge-ass chunk of history there.

That said, I'd second Low End Theory ... purest distillation of what hip-hop is about.

Chris O., Wednesday, 22 October 2003 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

What about "...shaolin shadowboxing and the Wu-Tang sword style?... If what you say is true..." etc. Or indeed "When I was little, my father was famous..."

Those two albums would be my picks from that (admittedly very broad) era.

Second "Fear of a Black Planet". I have to be in a certain mood to enjoy it, but when I'm in the mood I am just as blown away by its sonic originality now as I was when I first heard it.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

hey chris o., what the hell does this mean????

>purest distillation of what hip-hop is about.<

i honestly don't think it means *anything*! but you know that, right?

chuck, Wednesday, 22 October 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, since when is hip-hop about being "pure," anyway? and tribe called quest were eclectics; there was nothing "pure" about them, was there? (Actually, I don't think I've ever even heard Low End Theory. Though I did deservedly pan People's Instinctive Travels in the Paths of Rhythm or whatever it was called in Rolling Stone when it came out, calling it adult contemorary quiet-storm jazz fusion rap you can't dance to or something like that. Hip-hop w/o forward motion made no sense to me at all. I've evolved SOME since, but not much.)
