David Steans, Wednesday, 22 October 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't there Killah Priest as well? my least favourite? Kaiser Dave

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

rum barry was shit too

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

favourite = gza
least favourite = ghostface killah

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Killah Priest is one of the nine core members, he's on the sub bench.

David Steans, Wednesday, 22 October 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

In terms of rhymes, I'm torn between Meth and Gza as favorite; Meth on the variety of styles and humor, Gza for his dark style & substance.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

He was never in the Clan, at best he was affiliated. Cappadonna was in the group, then not anymore. U-God's solo stuff wasn't much, but he is good in the group. Master Killa is the last to release a solo record, I don't know what to expect. Method Man was the first star, but for a few years now what he's been up to has not been very inspiring.

favourite: Ghostface Killah

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

In the Wu-Tang video game GZA and Inspectah Deck were the best and Masta Killa really sucked. ODB had the best fatalities though.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

In Def Jam Vendetta Meth has total Macho Man power moves and Ghostface sort of sucks, even though he has that falcon bracelet thing.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Method Man and Gza are my joint favourites - songs with just the two of them (like Shadowboxing, Gold and High as Wu-Tang Get) are just phenomenal.

I think RZA is incredibly 'slept on' (to use the vernacular) as an MC - I love his ludicruously intricate verses delivered at stupefying speed, and the sheer number of conspiracy theories he can get through in just a short space of time. His verse on that onn song on Cuban Linx is just ridiculous (is it Wu Gambinos?). Extremely densely packed with verbiage, then he signs off with 'protons, electrons always cause explosions', for some reason acronymically spelling out the word 'peace'. That is, as they say, 'off the hook'.

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Ghost is at the moment becoming my fave ever MC, U-god is fucking abysmal.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

U-God is pretty mixed - sometimes he's the very best (see Black Jesus from Ghostface's Iron Man) and sometimes you've never heard worse (see Black Shampoo from Wu-Tang Forever)

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and I should temper my earlier praise of Rza by singling out his song from the Kill Bill soundtrack about the life of O-Ren Ishii.

It is toe-curlingly embarrassing! I've not even managed to listen to it all the way through yet, so dire is it!

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite is either Ghostface or ODB depending on my mood. Least favorite is probably the RZA; rapping just seems like a misguided vanity project for him. And "Ode to O-Ren Ishi" is probably even worse than that thing he did about the immigrant from Sudan on the second Gravediggaz record.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the 'protons electrons..' verse is from 4th Chamber i think, but yeah, RZA is much underrated as a rapper although he does start to sound a bit monotone when you here to much of him - bobby digital.

i probably like ghostface best, especially in full on spitting fury mode, like 'wildflower' (very nasty sentiments tho') and the "call an ambulance, jamie been shot.." bit of 'impossible' but also when he's doing his nutty crying thing (i can't go to sleep) and nice ghostface (all i got is you) is great too. i even like romantic ghostface (camay) although i do hope he's joking.

least favourite: poppa wu. who the hell let him in the building?

adam b (adam b), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ODB!

calstars (calstars), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't enjoyed gza as much since i read the comment on AMG that he sounds like he's reading from a book (it's true!) but he's still my favorite.

also, we can't forget u-god's verse on "chessboxin". for that at least we can place him above masta killa and inspectah deck, whose only crime is that they sound like pale, washed-out imitations of gza.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Least favorite is definitely ODB. Favorite is tough, Ghostface has had the best overall albums, Raekwon has had THE best single album, Meth is really likeable so I dunno.

D Aziz (esquire1983), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Vahid, Deck's verse on "Triumph" is so good that one time I saw the whole thing written on a bathroom wall.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

My ranking of Wu MCs:
GZA
Inspectah Deck
RZA
Ghostface Killah
Raekwon
Method Man
U-God
ODB
Killah Priest
Master Killah

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now Ghost does the best albums. GZA is still my fav on the mic. RZA is of course the producer but I like him on the mic a lot too. ODB - of course. INS and Masta Killa have always been underrated. Killah Priest - Heavy Mental was the shit. The first La The Darkman and Killarmy albums were a'ight too.

I always thought Meth sounded better on Erick Sermon beats; he should have been with the Def Squad - his flow was just too simple and he was too into blunts and his balls.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I got love for the Def Squad though fo sho. Keith Murray gets busy most beautifully.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Keith Murray is almost forgotten/ignored, no? His debut verse, on Sermon's "Hostile", is one of my favorite verses ever.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

from most to least:

RZA
Ghostface
GZA
Raekwon
Masta Killer
Method Man
U-God
Ol Dirty
Inspektah Deck

Meth has flow, but lyrics are all soundbites...RZA's awkward flow is just beautiful. his new album, birth of a prince, is great.

la the darkman is indeed good, as is beretta nine, islord, streetlife, 9th prince, a whole lot of wu-fam.
not cappadonna though...awful.
eric sermon beats are horrible...totally lacking in interest, soul, anything...

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Raekwon is my favorite.

Inspektah Deck and Trife are my least favorite.

Baby OO (adaml), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

tom, i think inspectah deck's verse on "let my n***as live" is the best one on that highly estimable album, but i still think he sounds too much like gza, too stereotypically a wu-tang rapper.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

eric sermon beats are horrible...totally lacking in interest, soul, anything...

Nowadays, yes. '88-'92, no.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

agreed.

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

What does everyone have against ODB? He's more entertaining than anything else. Don't y'all like to smile?

calstars (calstars), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha. See the ODB thread and what I have to say bout him.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Fave: method man
Least Fave: ODB

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Sermon was at his finest '93-'96. The slower beats with the bass you can FEEL and some kick ass vocal samples. The early Redman and Keith Murray albums and his first two solo joints are my faves. His three beats on the new Keith Murray album were great too. E-Dub has made more good beats than any producer - he's never had to make a comeback - like everyone else - cause he never went away. There's a reason he never went away, and it wasn't his mic skills.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Method Man and ODB the most. Big surprise.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"E-Dub has made more good beats than any producer"

this is ridiculous.

RZA, Primo, Premier, Dre, Beatminerz...all shit on him.

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I said "more good beats". RZA and Dre have had their moments of brilliance, but they've also done some wack shit. I'm not going to start hating on those two cats cause you don't like Sermon. But, Beatminerz shit on him??? This IS ridiculous.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Marley Marl is crying right now, you guys. Nice going.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Meth has the voice I most admire, grainwise.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 23 October 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

BEST: Ghostface Killah
RZA
GZA
Raekwon
ODB
Method Man
Inspectah Deck
Masta Killa
WORST: U-God

Best Wu solo = Only Built 4 Cuban Linx btw

Erick Sermon was groundbreaking and has the odd bright moment these days. But DA BEATMINERZ? Come on, dude.

Somewhere, Prince Paul is slamming his fist. Or asking for money on the street. So sad.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Thursday, 23 October 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually like the Politics of the Biz album. I mean, he wanted to make a mediocre commercial sounding album. But Prince Paul can do no less than a GOOD commercial album.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 23 October 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

when's he gonna make one, then?

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 23 October 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"Politics of the Biz" was destined to be a letdown simply because it isn't a full length Prince Paul/Biz Markie collabo.

rob geary (rgeary), Thursday, 23 October 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the new rza album is really good. its been on my headphones for the last few days.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 23 October 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Faves: ODB, Ghostface, GZA

Mil, Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Everything Prince Paul touches deserves a careful listen. If anyone here is a musician, you know that there are just few certain people in music who understand what it takes. Prince Paul is without question one of hip-hops smartest people. I'd rather spend time listening to someone who I've known as a musical genius for years, then try to MAKE myself listen to someone new. Every song you hear on the radio; Prince Paul could make it better - not the beat - just the song would be better. If you don't think so then you don't know Prince Paul like I do.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 23 October 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

his most recent album is shit
sounds like he's copying others now...

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 23 October 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

If you don't think so then you don't know Prince Paul like I do.

so THERE!

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 23 October 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Prince Paul's "Politics of the Business" is ass. Plain and simple. Although the MF Doom, Wordsworth & Chubb Rock song is nasty. I'm not saying in reference to that. Talk to me when someone has a history as good as someone with Gravediggaz "6 Feet Deep", the first three De La albums, "A Prince Among Thieves", and Handsome Boy Modeling School under their belt.

And RZA's new album is not very good at all. I like "Fast Cars" with Ghostface Killah and I also enjoy "We", but most everything else is a big RZA parody by some guy named Bobby Digital, if you ask me.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Thursday, 23 October 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad I gave you guys someone else to rip on. Erick Sermon, now Prince Paul.... how about the Alchemist? I like him too. or Beatnuts????

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 23 October 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Handsome Boy Modelling School - I always forget - there is some shatty Prince Paul out there.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 23 October 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Alchemist = biggest one-trick pony ever

Beatnuts = too good to ever make any money, it seems

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Friday, 24 October 2003 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

My ranking of Wu members, best to weakest (I like them all, really.)

Ghostface Killah
Method Man
RZA
GZA
Ol Dirty Bastard
Raekwon
Inspectah Deck
U-God
Masta Killa
