Just got this on the old she-mail.

Some Digital Love from Daft Punk!

It's a veritable bonanza of intergalactic funk!

It's sort of their way of doing an encore, and oh my lord what an encore it is! Alongside the 'stellar' manga extravaganza, DP are releasing a 14 track compilation of rare remixes and recordings previously only available from the Daft Club online! The film is on general release throughout the UK on 24th Oct, with a DVD release coming on 1st December. Oh yeah...and there's a limited edition of the DVD too! AND the album is available of double LP! A worthy addition to any record collection me thinks.

Any Daft Punk release is always a baited breath affair. Remember the size of the queue in HMV on the release of 'Discovery'? Mad, but sooo worth it. Thank you Daft Punk, for allowing us back into your weird and wonderful little world again. Next stop...the moon.

Tracklist for DVD and Daft Club album looksa somethin' like this -

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Proof that music and anime are the only things I can rely on in life.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Bump-I'm off home!

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

romanthony's mix of "one more time" is pretty classy, and i'll take a moment to reiterate: jess & crabbe rule. other than that i'm lukewarm on the net-only remixes. laidback luke in particular starts out storming but basically goes nowhere, and the jaxx remix is (once again) a bit of a mess. i don't think i've heard boris dlugosch's mix yet - that should be interesting.

of course, i'm breathless with anticipation for the DVD. i don't think san diego will get the theatrical release so i'll probably have to trek up to LA.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

That press release is... awful.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not another album : (

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

oh gosh tracer, you should see dimitri from paris' press releases. ooh la la!

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

why oh why won't they tour ? why oh why oh *why* ?

hey but what's that jaxx remix of 'phoenix' like ?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 22 October 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

sort of a noisy, tuneless stomp ... i mean the original track isn't exactly the hottest part of discovery ... along the lines of "set yo body free" but without a quality hook.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ronan, work on a new album has been way delayed because bangalter ruptured an eardrum

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I read about that when he cancelled all his gigs but I presumed it was just a lame excuse since from what I hear from promoters etc he has a rep as being quite temperamental.

Good to hear they're actually doing one though, I had a nasty feeling they were going to give it up and just milk it aside from the Together stuff Bangalter does with DJ Falcon.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

it's definitely not a dodge. the damage was apparently much worse than initially thought and hence has taken longer to heal than expected. most everything was brought to a halt, but i recall someone telling me that they started work again earlier this fall.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Sweet. I should never have doubted him! Forgive me Thomas.

As regards this DVD I really want to hear the Cosmo Vitelli remix of Face to Face, his mix of Behind by Lacquer almost tops the original.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i love love love the Jaxx remix of 'Phoenix' - complete mentalism

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

whatever happened to Phoenix? um, i mean Phoenix-the french band. that Phoenix.

scott seward, Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

a lot of these bonus tracks i already heard via the Daft Club (which seemed like a cool idea at the time and indeed t'was) but looking forward to this all the same

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

They said they were working on a new project, but they didn't want to ruin it by talking about it too soon. A lot of August and the begining of September were taken up by preparing for/ doing press for the launch of Interstella 555. But they also gave the impression they were heading back to the studio after that.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

surely the musical can't be too far off the horizon

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Guy Mans and Dolls.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

heh, Ronan when you see the film that gag will RESONATE.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Daft Punk will be multi-millionaires if they actually get all that merchandise from the film out into the real world. so necessary!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, i would so raise my kids on that shit

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

in these times of DFA, the Hacker, Felix, Richard F, it's hard to believe anyone would really care about daft punk.

wait! can we add daft punk to the 'steepest decline' thread?

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

No.

Omar (Omar), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"harder better faster stronger" > the dfa
"one more time" > "silver screen shower scene"
the hacker = kind of a one trick pony, doncha think?

but who's richard f?

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

This is cool, but I'm a bit miffed because I thought they'd have a new album ready by now!

Nicolars (Nicole), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

the Hacker better than Daft Punk?!?! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i much prefer 'silver screen...' to 'one more time' (which irks the fun-hater in me i'm afraid) but they are totally different tracks and such comparisons are irrelevent as proven by disco science.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i picked "one more time" because it's more riff-driven than any other daft punk song i could think of off the top of my head. maybe "rock and roll" or "rollin and scratchin" would have been a better comparison.

i disagree, i think this kind of comparisons is the best argumentation technique i've learned from years of reading ILM (and really as telling as anything else).

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Enough haterizin', it's MERRY FUCKIN' CHRISTMAS, BABY

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

can you still get the tracks from Daft Club online?

I"d liek to hear the Jaxx remix...

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Thursday, 23 October 2003 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Hope so, I lost my Daft Card before I ever got a chance to use it.

paul probably meant Richard X, who I love as much as the Punk, possibly more, but the only avenues for comparison that spring to mind are the 80s inspirations in their last records and 'Rock Jacket' vs 'Harder Better Faster Stronger'. And maybe 'You (Better Let e Love You x4) Tonight' vs 'Face to Face'. But if he was talking about Richard Fearless, he's just mental.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i may upload the jaxx remix tonight

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Do it. Please.

Tracer, if you thought the release sucked before, I had to correct the spelling of 'intergalactic' ;-).

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i listened intently to the jaxx mix again last night and i just don't get it. when i say "tuneless" i suppose it's an obvious dig because it's built around what sounds like a sample of the master musicians of jajouka! (it's cool to kind of hear "lucky star" emerging out of that in hindsight)

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 23 October 2003 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

things i like about the Jaxx remix of 'Phoenix'

1. the 'spoken word' intro
2. when the tribal beat drops
3. that weird horn break leading to mad Arabic vibe - paving the way for 'lucky star' as vahid points out
4. when the sample of 'Phoenix' comes in - this is your only indication that the Jaxx are attempting a remix rather than just creating a new track from scratch (which they have otherwise effectively done here it seems)
5. that buzzing bee swarm sound heralding another shift in track direction
6. those custom Jaxxy low contemplative synths

it does tail off a bit towards the end, but the first 2 minutes/everything up to and including the isolated bee swarm sound is killer

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 23 October 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"paul probably meant Richard X"

yes, my bad. and not r fearless. god...

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 23 October 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

but, um, fearless did exactly one good dj mix (live at the social pt. 3 disk 2) and at least one good remix (ruby's "paraffin")

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 23 October 2003 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Daft Punk is way better than Richard X. - Rock Jacket is cool. but most the rest sucks arse.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Friday, 24 October 2003 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't start sayin' shit on Richard 'round me. I'm to him what half of ILM is to Basement Jaxx.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 24 October 2003 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

DP didn't manage to cover a Thelma Houston/Jam and Lewis classic on their last record and equal it. Using a "Popstars: The Rivals Reject" for God's sake! And there is no DP mash-up as great as 'We Don't Give A Damn About Our Friends'/'Freak Like Me' or 'I Wanna Dance With Numbers'.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 24 October 2003 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i prefer X-Factor to Discovery as well. anyway, here be that Jaxx remix

stevem (blueski), Friday, 24 October 2003 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Not allowed to listen to too much here on my last day at work here, plus they've disabled the headphone jack anyway, so everyone would hear it, but anyways, first impressions aren't bad, maybe worth owning even.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 24 October 2003 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha funny shit, Richard F is a DJ for Subliminal, I was thinking he meant him for a while which would have been ridiculous.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 24 October 2003 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Daft Punk never fully recovered from "Rollin' And Scratchin'" in my eys.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 24 October 2003 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

what in the world according to ARP does that mean?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

eys ==> eyes, and what I mean is I have no idea what the second half of _Homework_ sounds like because I've never made it past "Rollin' and Scratchin'".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

because it was so good? *confused*

the second half of Homework is as good as the first: Teachers, High Fidelity, Oh yeah, Burnin, Indo Silver Club, Alive... it's more full on i guess but over 6 years have gone by and you've missed out on these killer tunes :O

stevem (blueski), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

that goes for gareth as well, cuh, neither of you can no longer be my idol

stevem (blueski), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

'Rollin' & Scratchin' is probably one of the weakest tracks on it in all honesty

stevem (blueski), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"teachers" turns out to be an almost note-for-note, word-for-word rip of an obscure chicago acid track. or is it the other way around?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

what's the track?

i still need that 'Fix' tune

stevem (blueski), Friday, 24 October 2003 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know. it's about twenty minutes into this chicago acid mix:

http://www.bunker-records.com/mix/jam.wma

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 October 2003 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

it starts at 23:10

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 October 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it's dj funk

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 October 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

'Rollin' & Scratchin' is probably one of the weakest tracks on it in all honesty

Crazy talk.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 31 October 2003 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i always used to skip that and 'Rock n' Roll'

stevem (blueski), Friday, 31 October 2003 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Listening to Gonzales' cover of 'Too Long' right now. Mind-blowing..
The Cosmo Vitelli remix of F2F is pretty classic too (ie. where the Neptunes should go next).

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

well i just got this:

Daft Club CD+DVD (Virgin Japan) :

1 Ouverture
2 Aerodynamic (Daft Punk Remix)
3 Harder Better Stronger Faster (Neptunes remix)
4 Face to Face (Cosmo Vitelli remix)
5 Phoenix (Basement Jaxx remix)
6 Digital Love (Boris Dlugosh remix)
7 Harder Better Faster Stronger (Jess & Crabbe remix)
8 Face to Face (Demon remix)
9 Crescendolls (Laidback Luke remix)
10 Aerodynamic (Slum Village remix)
11 Too Long (Gonzales Version)
12 Aerodynamite
13 One More Time (Romanthony's Unplugged)
14 Something About US (Radio Edit)
15 Voyager (Dominique Torti Wild Style Edit)

DVD

1 Interstella 5555 Trailer
2 Daft Punk Interview
3 Something About Us Video

i'm assuming the interview on the DVD is the one from the beginning of the film where they're with leiji and dressed up as robots. i haven't watched it yet because it's NTSC r-2.

the dominique torti edit is the shit, though. basically he smacks the pitch up and down to make it sound like the cd is being attacked by a robot scratch dj -think "adventures on the wheels of steel" or something but with unreal smoothness and precision. actually it's the same effects used in the "crescendolls" breakdown but applied liberally all over the track. lots and lots of fun.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

vahid make sure u get the non-edit wildstyle full length (soulseek has it). as the edit is, well obviously, shorter. but yeah one of the obvious remixes of the year. its certainly not often that a remix of an lp track from 3 years ago gets tong, mixmag, us et al *all* in a lather, but this has. loose canons used it on the breezeblock this week too. i like the bit where it basically just virtually stops altogether. never heard of torti either.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

it's longer??? the one on the cd is like 6:30!

but yeah, i'm glad i sprang the cash for it! now i'm trying to decide if i'm nerd enough to pick up the japanese version of "discovery" just for the anime art. i draw the line at the "bearbrick" box, though.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

ah now here is where i may be talking a load of rubbish. the first time i heard it played on the radio was a 2 minute snatch so on discovering that there was a version called 'edit' i thought there was 2 versions, a long and a short. there's clearly not.

there's a japanese version of discovery ?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 17 December 2003 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I WANT THE BEARBRICKS! Please.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a japanese version of discovery ?

it has no extra tracks but the jewel case comes in a cardboard sleeve with artwork and it includes a semi-thick booklet of interstella 5555 artwork. it also costs 30-40 us dollars.

we've moved from I Love Music to I Love Mentalism (manga, merchandise) here...

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

what track is piscesboy talking about there sorry? I can't really follow despite repeated perusal. A wildstyle remix of a Daft Punk track?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Voyager (Dominique Torti Wild Style Edit)

it's the "japan-only bonus" track. it's pretty good.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

aha cool. i'll check it out. loving the dvd actually, I was very touched by the death scene.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

and the dream sequence near the start made me feel very single

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

and i urge you all to track down the japanese edition of the "harder, better, faster, stronger" single and hear the "Breaker's Break" and Pete Heller remixes of HBFS. the first is a DMX-krew-type electro boogie and the second is a high-nrg 9 minute prog house marathon!! WOOOOO!

x-post: me too, ronan, me too.

the end of the death scene where the camera zooms in to show the mechanical toy band: INCREDIBLY CLASSIC.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

HOLY SHIT I JUST GOT THIS TODAY AND JUST FINISHED WATCHING IT AND HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 18 December 2003 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

the only thing I didn't like about it was how cheap the text looked (ie at the awards scene and stuff)

also the title (not the title itself, but the the title card itself) should've been much better, and it should've come up at the first "one more time!"

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

agreed about the typefaces, *but* that's typical in anime. Momus and and anybody else who likes formalism up in this etc...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

really? I guess I don't know--they looked like they were generated in imovie or something (as did the gold records) and it was kinda jarring

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 18 December 2003 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
do they change depending on language selection? I've gotta check when I get home!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

go to http://www.daftpunk.com for more info!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i confess to submitting my e-mail address. they will probably cost £55.55 each. i think softer dolls like the ones in the film are sorely needed.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

it does amuse me that the hero is called Shep though. and he is blue (peter)!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

according to www.daftcrew.fr.st the 2005 (eta) film Hairlock is to be soundtracked by Daft Punk (presumably in the same way that Irreversible was)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 11 January 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope everyone realised the remixes vahid mentioned wre also available on the UK 2x12" release, as was the suddenly renowned
(but only really 70% successful) Neptunes mix.

And yes, I'm down for the figures. The next 'Losing My Edge' parody will probably be about toy collectors like me.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 12 January 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost: Captain Hairlock? (tee-hee)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 12 January 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Barima i heard you have a die-cast Captain Sensible figure - original '82 production line, i heard you have sold all your toy figures and bought Lego Star Wars...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 12 January 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

Happy Valentine's from Thomas?
http://www.headphonesex.co.uk/2008/02/my-beating-heart.html

Spencer Chow, Friday, 15 February 2008 07:04 (seventeen years ago)

ok track, look forward to remixes maybe.

tremendoid, Friday, 15 February 2008 07:21 (seventeen years ago)

You're kidding right? Amazing track.

Spencer Chow, Friday, 15 February 2008 07:31 (seventeen years ago)

interesting title-wise: Sebastian and/or Kavinsky were playing an unreleased Guy-Man track called Jet ♥'s in their support slot on the Australian tour...

(one of them held the CD-R up to the camera before putting it on)

energy flash gordon, Friday, 15 February 2008 08:14 (seventeen years ago)

I think it's an okay tune, but not very exciting. Paint-by-numbers filter house. Does anyone know what the sample is, it sounds kinda like Minnie Riperton?

Tuomas, Friday, 15 February 2008 08:32 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, it really just sounds like a leftover track Bangalter put online as a gift for fans rather than something he'd actually release on a record.

Tuomas, Friday, 15 February 2008 08:37 (seventeen years ago)

If I'm not mistaken: Michael Jackson, "It's the Falling in Love"

The Reverend, Friday, 15 February 2008 08:38 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know, seems very much like an On Da Rocks kind of thing, like "Club Soda" but made of vocals. The way he warbles the vocal makes it sound like Michael.

Spencer Chow, Friday, 15 February 2008 08:41 (seventeen years ago)

haha, or yeah, just Michael.

Spencer Chow, Friday, 15 February 2008 08:41 (seventeen years ago)

Definitely "It's the Falling in Love"

The Reverend, Friday, 15 February 2008 08:43 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, you're right. It seems Michael Jackson sounds like Minnie Riperton when sped up a bit.

Tuomas, Friday, 15 February 2008 08:59 (seventeen years ago)

not really, no

The Reverend, Friday, 15 February 2008 09:06 (seventeen years ago)

This sounds pretty old. I'd be surprised if Bangalter was still making this kind of stuff.

baaderonixx, Friday, 15 February 2008 10:07 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, it totally sounds like it was made in the 90s.

Tuomas, Friday, 15 February 2008 10:30 (seventeen years ago)

Paint by numbers filter-disco > most other types of music when the dudes are trying really hard so this is ok by me.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 February 2008 11:36 (seventeen years ago)

nice one! i never get bored of stuff like this. daft punk dudes seem to show way more respect to their samples than their contemporaries.

do they clear their samples btw? perhaps why a track like this would never make it on to proper daft punk release.

Crackle Box, Friday, 15 February 2008 11:57 (seventeen years ago)

It sounds like a demo. A good one, though!

Bodrick III, Friday, 15 February 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

that b&w italian (?) disco video >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> probably fake daft punk castoffs

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 15 February 2008 18:46 (seventeen years ago)

It's not Thomas Bangalter.
