Is this genuine? Sounds like him, and sounds like a Kayne production.

It's nice.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

it's bloody lyrically brilliant.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

why can't i find this on soulseek?!

D Aziz (esquire1983), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the bits i can hear that aren't hot97 djs talking sound nice, but the production fetishist in me hurts when asked to evaluate stuff that's been taped off radio. rollie pimperton at pitchfork says that the producer is a relative unknown called "buchananns". if he did a joint with project pat, he could be "project pat buchananns" HA!

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I have the studio cd version on my blog today, if anyone wants to hear it.

It's really good. I'm very excited for the new album now.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

"the martha stewart that's far from jewish"?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I just heard it a few minutes ago on the drive home...it's ok. kind of predictable Reasonable Doubt/Blueprint type beat, but I guess that's the idea, but I don't like his relaxed BP flow. he lets some real talk loose on those verses, though. he had me up until the beat drops out at the end, though -- i mean, dammit, a botched a cappella finish nearly spoiled "Made You Look", and that was better than this.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Mitch, maybe Jay confused Jewish with Polish.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that the a capella ending is really, really interesting from a sorta narrative-theory kinda standpoint

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Love it! So excited for the Black Album. Also, do I hear the beginning (or the re-starting, to be more exact) of beef with 50 Cent at the end?

"No, I ain't got shot up a whole bunch of times/Or made up shit in a whole bunch of lines"

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

50 was taking shots at jay on their tour, asking the crowd to cheer if they wanted him to play for longer and overrun into Jays set.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

it seems like all the talk about 50 guesting on Jay's album has gone quiet, I've noticed.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Hov needs to bury 50 real quick. Now that Ja isn't around, 50 is about as wack as it gets. Does he not seem almost retarded when he talks? I thought Dre was done with these gangster/actor fags when he left Death Row.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think much of the beat,to be honest...
other than that i like it

robin (robin), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Matthew Perpetua -- thanks for the link to your blog. It's great; keep it up, and keep the songs a'comin'.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i was going to say the same

robin (robin), Thursday, 23 October 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

also,does foolish mean good now?

robin (robin), Thursday, 23 October 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently the actual lead single is gonna be a neptunes track called "change clothes".

this scares me a bit (taken from a sohh press preview reportback:)

"December 4th," a cut that features his mother on the intro and the hooks. As Just Blaze lit the drums and sample, Mrs. Carter fondly recounts her son's evolution, from December 4th when he was born weighing 10lbs, 8 ounces all the way through his first bike, his love of sports and his separation from his father."

sounds like... "she's alive", don't it? oy.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

and call me a sentimentalist, but i'm kinda upset that premier isn't gonna get a cut.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

dammit, no Premo again? I was all looking forward to a Pain In Da Ass intro into a Premier beat, just like Volumes 1 and 2. that's pretty lame, considering that Premo submitted beats for Jay's last 3 albums that weren't used, and this time Jay actually sought him out and made a big deal about it. did Ski get cut too?

I'm a little worried about the lead single being another Neptunes collabo...all their contributions to The Gift & The Curse were, IMO, subpar, and it seems like for an album with this kind of heavy importance attached to it, bringing it out with a goofy club banger with Pharrell on the hook would be kind of pointless and dumb. so I hope they come hard with something different.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 23 October 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, I just got chills. I'm kinda disappointed he abandoned the 12 tracks/12 producers idea, but if he's making stuff like this that's fine. His voice is in top form; he's got that total sense of entitlement mixed with weird ambient melancholy thing down pat. It's like he doesn't even have to try.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Thursday, 23 October 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

al: they don't say anything about ski. it's up in the air, at best. i think the neps tracks on 'gift & curse' are good (the gift's actually an alright-to-good summer album and it's summer here now, or at least should be) but, yeah, if jay's going for thematic unity (and he obviously is), i don't think they'll do as good a job of keeping it subdued like, say, timbo did with 'hola hovito'. that said, i want a new jay song that i'll hear at parties.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 23 October 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

cos primo didn't turn up to the studio! so they gave his slot to 9th wonder

prima fassy (bob), Thursday, 23 October 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there any reason why he didn't ask the RZA? Is there bad blood between Jay-Z and the Wu? Or is it just one of those things where it just didn't happen, or Jay didn't really want to work with him?

I only ask because it seems like RZA is one of the only major hip hop producers of the past 10 years who wasn't involved with this project.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 23 October 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Primo not showing up to the studio is a myth. I'm actually hearing that Primo's beats were rejected. But then again, either could be true.

I honestly don't care for the RZA's beats right now. That one beat "The Whistle" on his new album is fucking terrible.

I think 9th Wonder has the worst drums in the world. Fruity Loops presets? Probably. He does use the thing.

I'm most excited for the Rick Rubin and Ski collabs.

This song is the cat's pants.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Thursday, 23 October 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"al: they don't say anything about ski. it's up in the air, at best. i think the neps tracks on 'gift & curse' are good (the gift's actually an alright-to-good summer album and it's summer here now, or at least should be) but, yeah, if jay's going for thematic unity (and he obviously is), i don't think they'll do as good a job of keeping it subdued like, say, timbo did with 'hola hovito'. that said, i want a new jay song that i'll hear at parties. you don't have to defend the Blueprint 2 to me, I like bunches of it, just not the Neptunes track.

I guess the rumors about Lil Jon getting on the Black Album were just rumors?

Al (sitcom), Friday, 24 October 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it would be great if Ski's on there - that second track on Reasonable Doubt is as gorgeously lush as anything on The Blueprint.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 24 October 2003 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll be pissed if the Neptunes are all over this. i'll be very happy if there's a Nelly appearance.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 24 October 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Rick Rubin! When was the last time he produced any hip hop? I mean like actually got on the boards. Could be amazing, who knows.

The "What More Can I Say" beat is growing on me fast. The acapella bit at the end is hot. It seems to go right back to a pre-recording Jay Z just freestyling for himself, flashes straight through his massive peak, all the way up to retirement in (maybe?) frustration ("we'll see what happens when I no longer exist/fuck this").

I sort of miss him already!

rob geary (rgeary), Friday, 24 October 2003 05:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Sasha Frere-Jones has a brief rundown of some of the tracks at his blog.

JS Williams (js williams), Friday, 24 October 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Who's heard "Change Clothes"? I just heard it for the first time, and it's pretty weak. I really like "What More Can I Say," but "Change Clothes" has all the same problems as the worst Neptunes tracks on "Blueprint 2". The Neps excel when they do clattering off-kilter futurism and fall flat when they do synth-swooping Prince imitations. And I don't think Pharrell's falsetto has ever been more irritating. I dunno; maybe it'll grow on me. I hope so.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It seems like, the better & more confident Pharrell gets at singing, the more annoying his voice becomes, wtf?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I started a "Change Clothes" thread! go over there! :)

Al (sitcom), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

One of these days I might understand why people hold this guy in such high esteem; however, I can tell you I won't be listening to this track when that revelation comes. Ugh.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

no dre either? i'm getting conflicting news, but i'll go with sfj. more pre-emptive upsetness: that the em track is "annoying" and the neps track is apparently more "excuse me miss" than "excuse me miss again".

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

This beat sounds like the music they play at the end of game shows when they announce what consolation prizes the losers get to take home with 'em.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

are you talking about "Change Clothes" or "What More...", Nick?

Al (sitcom), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious: that's what kelis's "game show" sounds like, and that's great! but not for a leadoff hov single probably. i can't find it on the filesharers yet.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"What More Can I Say". Sometimes I like that sound (the skits on the first BEP album, fr'instance), but here, eh.

I'm really gonna have to hear this Kelis now though. God I love her voice.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

(oh wait, i thought you were talking about "change clothes", and i had a totally different sound in mind. get the kelis anyway.)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

(the skits on the first BEP album)

OUCH

prima fassy (bob), Saturday, 25 October 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I quite like "Change Clothes"! It's kinda halfway between Andre 3000 Princiness and the bouncy upbeatiness of "H to the Izzo" but produced by Ian Pooley circa Since Then. I suspect I'll end up liking it more than "Excuse Me Miss".

"What More Can I Say" is really good too though.
