Seems there has never been a thread about Wales here

So.. Why no thread from the place that has given the world such bands and acts as Super Furry Animals, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Manic Street Preachers, The Alarm, The Levellers and...well.. nevermind about Shakin' Stevens and Bonnie Tyler...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Meic Stevens!!

scott seward, Thursday, 23 October 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i love the super furries, and like gorky's,but other than that i can't really think of any welsh music that i like...

robin (robin), Thursday, 23 October 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Gorky's were GREAT once upon a time. I know there are those that will disagree, but the crazier they were, and the more they sang in Welsh, the better they were.

I like the Manics as well, but that's a completely different story.

Damian (Damian), Thursday, 23 October 2003 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

super furry animals and gorky's = cream of the welsh crop.

the alarm = useless, then and now. not even good for cheap 80s nostalgia.

the manics = i've heard only snippets, didn't effect me one way or another. they've probably been poisoned forever for me by hanging around ILM.

the levellers = can't remember if i've ever heard anything by them. prob. not a good sign.

catatonia = band that i like more than i probably should.

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 23 October 2003 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The Levellers were/are from Brighton, in England, and to my knowledge have never had any Welsh connection to speak of. Please correct yourself.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Forgot about Catatonia. Great band (as were The Alarm too)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

John Cale

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Man and Budgie own all the bands mentioned above

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

well maybe except for John Cale, that is.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

John Cale and early Gorky's - I can't think of anything other than that. All other bands mentioned above are shite - at least three, Catatonia, Manics and Stereophonics are beyond shite and constitute state terrorism. Of course John Cale hasn't lived in Wales for 40-odd years. Never heard Budgie or Man

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Young Marble Giants (and offshoots) need a mention.

Jez (Jez), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Never heard Budgie or Man

Oh, I'm sure you'd love them (nb this is a bare faced lie)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, you asked for it

McLusky, The Take, Badfinger, Datblygu, Tystion, Ffa Coffi Pawb, Fflaps, Acid Casuals, Julie Murphy, Geraint Jarman, Llwybr Llaethog, Four Letter Word, Jon Langford, High Contrast, Helen Love, Sammo Hung, The Martini Henry Rifles, Ectogram, Traddodiad Ofnus, Y Cyrff, Guinea Worm, Anhrefn, The Oppressed, Icons of Filth, No Choice, Headcase Ladz

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom Jones was good once ("lookin out ma windooooow")

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Anhrefn!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Never heard Budgie or Man

Well I liked that Budgie song Metallica did - weren't they just a good old fashioned headbangin' heavy rock outfit? In which case, i very well might like them.

Oh forgot about Badfinger and Young Marble Giants

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

LLygod Ffyrnig! (You wouldn't believe how long it's just taken me to find the correct spelling of that!)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The Partisans! (OK, I'll stop now)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 23 October 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ffa Coffi Pawb is still one of the best band names ever. If you say it slowly it means 'coffee beans for everyone', if you say it fast it means 'fuck off everybody'. Ectogram covered a big stretch of The Faust Tapes, didn't they? I would so love to hear that.

Damian (Damian), Thursday, 23 October 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob from The Partisans used to work in the office just across from me and also helped to install our wireless broadband system. Which was shit :(

Victimise, The Tunnelrunners, Ail Symudiad, Screen Gems, Grids, Seventeen...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 23 October 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i was a big Manics fan in my teens - they're the kind of band it's easy to get obsessed with at that age. I still enjoy quite a few of their records, though - a great singles band, Everything Must Go is a consistently great album.

As for the others, I enjoy quite a lot of Super Furry Animals songs, but they haven't made their killer album. Catatonia were boring indie-rock crud with a few excellent singles to redeem them. I like a handful of Gorky's tracks - couldn't stomach a whole album.

I think Cerys Mattews once said that the combination of bad reception for most BBC radio channels in wales (except - crucially - Radio 4) and a healthy supply of magic mushrooms had a big influence on the sound of the nation's indie bands> They all had a warped/druggy take on radio 4 easy listening/MOR. It fits in well with Gorkys and SFA i suppose.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 23 October 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the thing Ffa Coffi Pawb meaning "coffee beans forever" was just something they cooked up as a joke for non-Welsh speakers. Like me, which is a shame.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 23 October 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Mo-Ho-Bish-O-Pi, motherfuckers. Best one album band of the past five years.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 23 October 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah yes... good times... two of them are in a new band called The International Karate Plus who sound, well, quite similar. Quite Dinosaur Jr-y mebbe.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheers for the info Mencap, I've found their webpage (www.ikplus.co.uk), and the MP3s have a definite Mo-Hos sound about them... "Nail City" sounds like a revamped "Dropjaw".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The two Gene Loves Jezebel Aston brothers were from South Wales.

Both of these artists were born in Wales:

Julian Cope

and Green from Scritti http://www3.gateway.ne.jp/~wildcat/sp_uk/history/history_overview.htm

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely Wales' biggest selling musician at the moment is http://www.btinternet.com/~richard.earnshaw/bryn.jpg?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The Telescopes!

Cale still conducts interviews and performs songs in Welsh...when in Wales...

Stephen Boyle (SBoyle), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Young Marble Giants and Scritti Politti (well, Green anyway) own this thread

robin carmody (robin carmody), Thursday, 23 October 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Ned, where are you?

I just came across your AMG MC Mabon review.

(and did you get that email I sent you?)

mei (mei), Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I am here -- which e-mail was this? Was this recent?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 November 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

A week or two ago maybe, asking if you wanted to get free copies of the mag I'm working on at the moment, it's all about Welsh Music.

I'll resend it, is your ned@kuciNOSPAM.org address real?
(I remember sending you emails before but I'm not at my own computer now)

mei (mei), Thursday, 20 November 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It is real, never got it! Resend plz, thanks!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 November 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Mei, tell us more!
-- Schwingung (spacela...), November 20th, 2003.

I write for a magazine called Sound Nation, which is actually Wales' only national music magazine. We're publicly funded, the mag is totally free for people in Wales and it goes out monthly. The mag is part of the Welsh Music Foundation,
www.welshmusicfoundation.com
(The mag used to be called honk.)

The mag's not available in the shops, we send it by post to our subscribers every month. To become a subscriber someone normally fills in a freepost card (found in music shops etc) with their details and send it to us then we send the mag free every
month. There are currently over 5,000 subscribers and we estimate a readership of about 15,000. It's a proper nice looking colour print magazine which we think is important.

It used to be free to anyone who requested it through the website, but we were getting too many people from all over the world asking for it and we have a limited budget and postage is expensive! If anyone here really thinks they should get it drop me an email and explain why, I'm really sorry we can't afford to send it to everyone :-(

The WMF is an economic development project whose aim is to stimulate the infrastructure for music in Wales, and Sound Nation is part of that. We cover Welsh bands, managers, businesses etc. This _usually_ means Welsh people doing things in Wales or outside it, for example in the last couple of months we've written about a music software company based in Flintshire; an electronics company from Port Talbot selling listening posts into London; DVDs made here (including stuff about Super Furries and Ankst); someone winning a mangers association award etc. etc. and a LOT of stuff about Welsh bands. Occasionally we cover non-Welsh bands who play here, eg I reviewed Evanescence at Cardiff's CIA, but we prefer to stick with home grown acts.

Okay, the reason I'm posting all this - we need some new contributors, specifically people to review gigs in Wales, outside the South Wales area.
We need some people who live in or go to gigs in places like Bangor, Rhyl, Wrexham, Harlech, Pwlelli, Aberystwyth etc. etc.

I know pretty much everyone who posts here can write well enough so how about it? We can't really pay for things like live reviews, but it's good to get your views in a print mag that so many influential people read.

Email me or the editor, james@welshmusicfoundation.com if you want to know more.

Ta!

(I've just started a thread specifically for this: Mid/North/West Wales Contributors wanted for printed music mag)

mei (mei), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I've succeeded in accumulating a huge passive Welsh vocabulary just by listening to Gorky's (never mind that I live in Seland Newydd), so I'm quite curious about this magazine.
