OK, so Everything But The Girl may have been one, but who were the two others?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Coum Transmissions

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

they obviously weren't referring to Kingmaker or the Beautiful South

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

A pedant writes: they obviously weren't referring the Beautiful South. Well no, beacuse Paul Heaton was the frontman of the Housemartins before forming the Beautiful South...

FWIW Kingmaker used to be, like, my favourite band circa 'Eat Yourself Whole.' I still maintain that they were nowhere nearly as bad as they are/were made out to be. Still pretty shoody though, but improved as Loz got more bitter e.g. (Armchair Anarchist/Everything's Changed Since You've Been to London)

Ben Dot (1977), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe he and Justine will yet surprise us all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Rick Astley?

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Thursday, 23 October 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I seem to recall one of the top three being the Red Guitars (it was mentioned in a Housemartins interview at the time). EBTG were No 1 - don't know who the others were

bham, Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The Beautiful South were a Housemartins spinoff anyway, so. No, I don't think they were referring to them :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Fonda 500. DUH!

kate (kate), Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't Roland Gift from Hull?

Jez (Jez), Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The Red Guitars

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't Roland Gift from Hull?

yes.

The Marine Girls.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Pink Noise were supposed to be the best band in Hull back in the day.

freedon dupont, Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Dead Fingers Talk
Woody Woodmansey

Not The Marine Gurls. Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt met at Hull Uni, but Tracey and the rest of the MGs were from somewhere down south IIRC.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

In all their glory...

Freedom Dupont, Thursday, 23 October 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Rick Astley was from Blackburn or somewhere like that wasn't he?

chris (chris), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i hope fonda 500 are better than their first two singles would otherwise indicate

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

We're not having this argument again, Jim.

kate (kate), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

fair enough. i don't even remember the last time :(

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

if it helps matters i like your album

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Rick Astley was from Newton-le-Willows.

(Why do I remember this but not, say, my home phone number?)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

::shoots self::

J/K ;-)

kate (kate), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm very influential. watch your australian sales soar

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

No-one has mentioned Mick Ronson? Shame on you! Apparently, he used to cut the grass outside Genesis P-Orridge's house (and, no, that isn't a drugs reference).

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Genesis P.Orridge is from Hull?

THAT EXPLAINS EVERYTHING!!!

kate (kate), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately Genesis was merely a student in Hull. He can't claim birthright.

Freedom Dupont, Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Poseur.

kate (kate), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

God, I hope you don't think I'm from Hull.

freedom dupont, Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

... I've been to Hull and back (sorry)

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

(I was calling Gen a poseur, not you, BTW)

I've been to Hull and back several times, but then I have this weird quirk of being a Hullophile.

kate (kate), Thursday, 23 October 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I am from Hull. The Adelphi Club RoXor!!

Freedom Dupont, Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

but then I have this weird quirk of being a Hullophile.

That's not weird, that's perverse

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

What about The Gargoyles? 'Witnessing''s a classic"

"I don't eat eggs at Christmas, don't get pissed at Christmas. cos I'm a Jehova's Witness"

'Ferry Across The Humber' anyone?

Persecution Smith, Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Fonda 500! Duh.

Damn straight - come see (sort of) for yourselves:

PLUG: Bitmap and Simon Fonda 500 playing FREE tonight at Whitechapel Art Gallery

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 23 October 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

After a long lunch hour racking my brains, I've remembered the missing line from The Gargoyles' Witnessing, which I'm sure will swing things back in their favour as at least the third best band in Hull...

"I don't eat eggs at Easter,
Don't get pissed at Christmas,
I still think me knob's for stirring tea,
Cos I'm a Jehova's Witness"

Persecution Smith, Thursday, 23 October 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately Genesis was merely a student in Hull. He can't claim birthright.

Coum Transmissions which was GPO's project before Throbbing Gristle was based in Hull. He only did a year of university for a degree in Social Administration before he dropped out because they would not allow him to transfer into the English Dept. Genesis did live there for a few years before he and Cosey Left for London due to Police harrassment.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Friday, 24 October 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

As Jerry mentioned above, Rick Astley was from Newton-le-Willows. Courtesy of Smash Hits circa Mr Astley's time, I also know that the first person ever to be killed by a train met his untimely end in Newton-le-Willows.

Why can't I have a job that requires me to know this things?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Um. From memory:

3 Action.
Red guitars.
The Gargoyles.
