Leicester: Semper Eadem

Leicester is the UK's 10th biggest city, (as well as being the biggest city in the East Mildands)yet no decent music has ever come from the place, excepting Black Gorilla and their sublime masterpiece "Gimme Dat Banana", and Shawaddywaddy, who famously influenced My Bloody Valentine's guitar sound with their colourful suits.

Are Diesel Park West really the best it can do?

What do you mean - what about FAMILY!!!!!!!!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe my own eyes! Have you never heard of mid 80's janglers "John Hogg and the Incredible Cigars"?

TurK, Thursday, 23 October 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

not to mention the amazing "Original Reg and the Hubba Hubbas"

swallow or..., Thursday, 23 October 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Prolapse, you fuckers!

And Cornershop, sort of (they certainly hung out in Leicester a lot), and Perfume had one good song, and, ummm...hmmm.

Alien Sex Fiend were from Leicester as I recall; and the splendid(ly-named) My Head's Going To Blow Up.

Let's not talk about Aniseed tho.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 23 October 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Pah - what about YEAH YEAH NOH?

Rob M (Rob M), Thursday, 23 October 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Talking of Leicester, has anyone heard Prolapse's Geordie Mick's new band yet? I think they feature a bongo player.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Thursday, 23 October 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob hits the nail on the head once more. Yeah Yeah Noh were The Fall for Beatles fans.

harveyw (harveyw), Thursday, 23 October 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"he was attracted to the clumsy left,
blind faith, badges, Che Guevara posters,
'i am an enemy of the state'"

joni, Thursday, 23 October 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone remember stereolabesque fuzzyheads, "John Sims"? They named themselves after a gravestone in Leicester cemetary, apparently.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Thursday, 23 October 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh , they were mince.
im awaiting the 'holly hobby' reformation with bated breath, however.....

joni, Thursday, 23 October 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 23 October 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Kevin Hewick is from Leicester. The Geordie Mick band do easy listening versions of Joy Division songs, and wear Fez's. It's "hilarious".

Pripton Weird, Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Tjinder from Cornershop was a Wolverhampton boy, though - appropriately "Brimful of Asha" was all over the radio when Enoch Powell died. Leicester does of course have a very high Asian population, and is strong on the Desi beats front, yet the British Asian artists to have had big hits thus far tend to come from the West Midlands - Tjinder and Babylon Zoo one-hit wonder Jas Mann are both from Wolfcity, and Panjabi MC is from Coventry. You all forgot Mark Morrison, though (yeah, I know he lived in the US as a teenager, but he came out of Leicester when "Return of the Mack" broke).

Is Leicester really bigger than Nottingham, Muzzy?

robin carmody (robin carmody), Thursday, 23 October 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

What about Engelbert Humperdink? And Leicester certainly has a bigger population than Nottingham or Derby. The East Midlands has never really had any famous 'scenes' as far I can remember, but someone might tell me different...

Ben Squires, Thursday, 23 October 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

God, yes of course ... the UK's best-selling artist of 1967, much though some of us might want to deny it.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Thursday, 23 October 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

incidentally I never doubted that Leicester would be bigger than Derby, which only became a city in 1977, but I always imagined Nottingham had a bigger population. maybe Leicester has latterly overtaken Nottingham, or was Leicester always in front? I'm starting to think that Nottingham might be one of those cities which has had a massive decline in its population post-war.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Thursday, 23 October 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

you fucking idiots - not only are deep freeze mice from leicester, but also volcano the bear.

This is where Julian Cope gets all his german stuff from innit?

Snoop hoggy hogg, Friday, 24 October 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Terri and the Winkles who released the great post punk classic "Fur coat and no knickers" (a great Peel favourite circa 1981)

Enid Danton, Friday, 24 October 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
The Thurston Lava Tube are "the best m*otherf**ucking psychedelic, experminetal surf instrumental group on da f***ing planet", according to Jesus H Christ, Geordie Mick from Prolapse and more recently Ming Mang Mong fame, Kesh Mongreilf the famous Leicester mathematician, and 2 out of the 3 Reg's (the original Reg was unavailable for comment).

New Potatoes, Thursday, 10 February 2005 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone remember mid 80's noizeniks "The gay penguins of Bremen", who lived just off London Road. When they played the Princess Charlotte Miners benefit gig in 1984, they made my ears bleed with their arsequaking bass lines!

Little Mick, Thursday, 10 February 2005 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

According to AMG Kasbian are from Leicester....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Kasabian are from Countesthorpe which is a village just outside leicester and they take watered down baggy to new mediocre levels.
