"Of course, it also can sound a tad pretentious, but there's enough craft in the band's high-art explorations to make them intriguing at the very least. Still, it's the simple and evocative bitterswe

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 October 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Kiss Me" is a really lovely record though.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 23 October 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Putting how long the album lasts in the header is a good idea, actually. It's great when they do that with films as well. And "Kiss Me" is a chown.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 23 October 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I love "Kiss Me" to little bits.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 October 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

There can't be many songs that unite me, Dom and Dan - good on yer Sixpence None The Richer!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 23 October 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

what's a chown?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought you were on about tin tin "duffy" Stephen...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a great record too!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you heard the whole record?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

what's a chown?

tune = choon = chown. Circa 1998.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Tin Tin Duffy first album? Yeah I used to have it on tape. It's pretty good but the singles are the best bits.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard the whole Sixpence NTR album too, that's less good.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

'Kiss Me' would get even more love if it was The Sundays

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

from me as well i suspect

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant, the Six Pence record -- which yes it is crap. I think the bit quoted in the thread title is a fair, if asinine, way to describe it. So what's the laughing for?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

It's got one other really nice Sundays-ish track on it whose title I can't remember.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 23 October 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't think of anything else but the intro to MBV's "Don't Ask Why" whenever i hear the intro to "Kiss Me".

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is remnding me of how fantastic The Sundays were. THANK YOU SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, I wasn't dissing "Kiss Me" either.

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

You guys mean Stephen Duffy's song, right? Yes, that one is a great one

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 23 October 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

And Nash's precious vocals, which are reminiscent of Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser, invest the tunes with a melancholy grace that suits the themes of romantic longing and lost innocence that many of the songs deal with

"Kiss Me" is undoubtedly a gem. So good I once set up a thread about it...

Sixpence None The Richer's 'Kiss Me' - who else loves it?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 24 October 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Sixpence NTR is perfectly decent sub-Over the Rhine theological pop. (The subgenre that comes of reading too much C.S. Lewis and T.S. Eliot while listening to My Bloody Valentine and *Wrecking Ball*. Other examples include the Innocence Mission.) I always have to shake off a sense of embarrassment when I listen to them because of (a) the earnest eagerness to tackle big questions (perfectly exemplified in their name) and (b) the commercial success--but there's not a damn thing wrong with either of those things. Hating them is a reflection of showoffy cynicism or of hearing "Kiss Me" on the radio too many times (understandable in that case). The only bad thing I can say about them is that other groups, already mentioned in this message, sing about the same things a lot better. (And the covers--I cringed when they did "Don't Dream It's Over.")

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

one of the sixpence girl vocalists also used to be in velour 100 who were also "theological" to a point (well, on tooth and nail anyway) and were hundreds of times more interesting yet still derivative. there seems to be a large number of whispery poppy effluvience in this genre.

am i to believe though that the new Over the Rhine album is as good as AMG says it is?
