he's turned into the steve martin of rock.

and if you missed the concert, don't worry -- there will be a cd of it coming soon (along with the half-zillion other live PJ cds).

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

He looks like Laura Palmer's father. Creepy.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Thursday, 23 October 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It's clearly a wig.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 23 October 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

What's wrong with releasing the live albums? I think it's cool that they do that, so that if the fans want a copy of the show, they can get a high quality recording rather than whatever an amateur taper was able to come up with.

It's not as if the live albums are meant to be taken as a part of their real discography. It's just a nice service they do for their rabid fans.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 23 October 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Pearl Jam are one of the last bands I'd bash, but one of my few picks to bone with them is this huge live album discography. From what i understand, their label pretty much bankrolls these live releases... so, what about possibly bankrolling some new bands instead? What a fucking huge amount of time and effort being used to make one semi-large rabid fanbase (that's destined to decrease over time, of course) happy instead of doing a little more r & d on new talent, and possible expanding your customers.

Granted, if the live releases sell, that's more money in the pocket for the new bands in the future, etc. but when the hell is the future? Time and attention is more precious than money in this case.. Aaaaarrrrrrrr

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 23 October 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

one of my few picks to bone with them

I want to hope this was unintentional. ;-)

My understanding was actually that the band was going to handle the releasing of the live CDs through their fan club solely -- in otherwards, specifically something for all the hyperfans sold through the logical hyperfan outlet -- but that Sony said, "Hey, you're under contract, it's our product!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 October 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm, well Sony should clearly lick spoiled spinach.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 23 October 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a euphemism I didn't want to have to think about.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 October 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

on 2nd review, it's kind of a christopher lloyd type look.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 23 October 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

ie, if he teased it out a bit...

then also: the ECC dude.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 23 October 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

it's the don joyce of negativland silver bedhead look, minus the bed.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 23 October 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, Pearl Jam could be spending Sony's money in much worse ways. They generally keep a very low overhead in terms of recording and don't make costly videos. I get the feeling that the money that Sony gives/gave them for the 'bootleg' endeavor would have just been used up by them or one of the other big acts on a Sony label anyway, and probably wouldn't have budgeted for signing a new act anyway.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 23 October 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

They're actually not spending Sony's money anymore. They saw out the length of their seven album contract (counting the one earlier live record Live on Two Legs, I guess) and decided not to re-up, I gather.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 October 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, all that said, it's entirely possible that more live Pearl Jam releases, had Sony been funding all of them, would still be much better spent money than new artists that all happen to lick spoiled spinach. But my only point of contention was: maybe not. that's all. I very much don't dislike Pearl Jam.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 23 October 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I take it back, they DID do seven studio albums. Either way, contract over and they left.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 October 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

ten years pass...

did his hip go out?

how's life, Friday, 25 October 2013 10:44 (twelve years ago)

On tv, the announcer for the World Series keeps reciting these commercial plugs for Pearl Jam's latest album, and he and Tim McCarver were talking about Vedder over segments of a Pearl Jam song while we're looking at Fenway Park. Makes me dislike their music even more

curmudgeon, Friday, 25 October 2013 15:13 (twelve years ago)

anything tim mccarver and joe buck talk about makes you like that thing less. it's a special talent of theirs.

i play too fast (which is the sign of an amateur) (fact checking cuz), Friday, 25 October 2013 17:28 (twelve years ago)

apparently because the world series deal uses the new PJ album as well as a bunch of older songs, Joe Buck got caught referring to "Animal" as a new song
