Anyone heard it? Is it good?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 24 October 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

What's it called?

Michael B, Friday, 24 October 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

ah right "Devils Advocate"

Michael B, Friday, 24 October 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude I'll review that for your site if you download it and send me a copy! Gladly!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 24 October 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

unless you want to do it yourself or whatever

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 24 October 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitely, that'd be great! I could send you a copy no bother....I'm hunting high and low for it right now....

Michael B, Friday, 24 October 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool. Let me know when you need address or whatever. Win win situation!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

grrr, it doesn't even have "the compass"! but it's got "the wolf", and if it has even one other track that good i'll pay $20 for it.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

oh it's meant to be good, way of life is pretty nice.

The Wolf was the UR tribute or whatever was it, I haven't heard it.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to hear it.

adaml (adaml), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"the wolf" was a UR tribute?? well, you can't tell just from listening to it. it's more like if you took "the compass" and changed the focus from the vocal hook to the weird nagging siren, and then changed the siren into the strange hairy overgrown freaky cousin to the synth in "work it", this insane twisting riff/sonar ping. and the 10" picture disc is a photo of a wolf running through the arctic forest in glorious technicolor, like the sort of poster you'd see in a montana gun freak's hideout.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

also i hope the liner notes have more pictures of "the baron" in his leather pants and doublet.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The one with Mr Lif is a monster... I'm a lot more impressed than I thought I'd be.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Vahid apparently the name was a reference to The Seawolf, fucking awesome record that one.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I honestly thought this was about the Dave Clark Five. I am lame.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

am i the only one who wouldn't really want to listen to a techno album?
i mean, leaving aside the fact that i don't have much time for dave clarke,i'd rarely be arsed listening to an unmixed collection of tracks all by the same producer...
are techno albums usually just tracks one after the other?
(i'm talking more about albums by the likes of dave clarke,i mean i've heard jeff mills albums in which a lot of the tracks are fairly minimal, ambient,or whatever, but i'm more curious about the idea of a dancefloor techno album...)
or is it not techno at all?

robin (robin), Friday, 24 October 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i possibly didn't explain what i meant very well...
i don't really know what hard techno albums are like, the idea just seems quite strange...

robin (robin), Friday, 24 October 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

am i the only one who wouldn't really want to listen to a techno album?

not at all - it's my idea of hell. saying that, this is a pretty decent lp (in that pretty decent = i'll buy it if it's got more than three tracks i'll use in a dj set). 'she's in parties' on paper should be awful but it rocks!

stirmonster, Friday, 24 October 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I know what you mean Robin, but then Dave Clarke's stuff is enough about Dave Clarke to make this seem ok.

I can't really think of a good dance album made by someone who is simultaneously a credible DJ, though I'm sure there are some.

Apparently it is all dancefloor techno Robin yeah, to be honest that idea is more appealing to me than ambient stuff, not necessarily cos of today's discussion but because so often on dance albums the downtempo tracks are utter shite or they get Roots Manuva's cousin in or something.

I download tracks a bit so I've gotten used to listening to unmixed techno, it's not as weird as it sounds, not as good as a mix maybe but if it's a good track it's a good track.

Has anyone got the new Laurent Garnier mix by the way?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 24 October 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

since we're talking about bloated techno grandads

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 24 October 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

well i love kompakt total 3,but those tracks stand alone a lot better...
if i love a track i would download it,but its just the idea of buying an album of tracks designed solely to be mixed that seems odd...
maybe its just that i don't like dave clarke though...
i wouldn't have an interest in the downtempo tracks usually either,i only brought them up because i could see how they would make it into more of an "album" as such...

the new laurent garnier mix is like five different mixes isn't it?
it sounds interesting anyway, although i don't have the money to get it...

robin (robin), Friday, 24 October 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I figured the idea of dave clarke is fairly contrary to what you're into anyway, if that's fair.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The technasia remixes of 'way of life' are pretty fresh, specially the softer one with the housey piano/synth chords. The distinctive 909 clap on every kick makes it nice for doubles trix too. Looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.

tylero, Friday, 24 October 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't really know what hard techno albums are like, the idea just seems quite strange...

um, well - it's just like a daft punk album, just harder, ok?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

or like listening to Speicher, but unmixed.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

or it's like when you're listening to a mix and you're like "Damn, I wish this DJ would let the FUCKING TRACK PLAY OUT" and then he does.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

or it's like listening to Sunroof! or Earth or Terry Riley except it's made of DRUMZ

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

except when the artist in question isn't so good and it just goes ON AND ON AND ON and gets boring and then it's just like listening to people talk about microhouse, i mean, it's cool and all but you start to wonder how long it can go and what's the point of running over the same point 5000x

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i'd forgotten about daft punk,i suppose i do really like homework...

robin (robin), Saturday, 25 October 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

and its true to say that i don't really like dave clarke, although fuse presents dave clarke is really good, its just world service that pisses me off...

robin (robin), Saturday, 25 October 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

world service disc one is pretty lame, i'll admit that. try checking out his essential mixes if you can, or even his Muzik Masters disc from a few years ago.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 25 October 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Kraftwerk made good techno albums!

Fumiya Tanake's Tresor album 'Unknown Possibility Vol 2' is one of the best recent ones.

X102's 'Rings of Saturn' is worth checking out, as is Robert Hood's 'Internal Empire'. They're both amazingly creative techno albums.

But yeah, there's a lot of techno artists who are skilled at making 12"'s but don't really 'get' the album format.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 25 October 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i've liked what i've heard of force and form by surgeon,i suppose, but i've never really thoughts of it as being an album...
i suppose i kind of think there's no reason techno artists should "get" the album format

robin (robin), Saturday, 25 October 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

That's true really, sometimes it's worth a try though I suppose.

I saw Dave Clarke last night, he was great actually even if the crowd was rough.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 27 October 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Robin's right, Force and Form was a terrific release that somehow, even on CD format, sounded like a 2 X 12" format rather than a traditional album.

A good many of the successful/almost successful albums are on Tresor (see also the patchy but always fadcinating Drexciya releases). Tresor seem to carry the flag for the concept of album releases from techno artists.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 27 October 2003 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

how was laurent garnier ronan?

robin (robin), Monday, 27 October 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Excellent aswell, he got an hour and a half and really was good. He played Quetzal by Los Hermanos last, which was cool. Crispy Bacon was also really good. Clarke was the best I've seen him on Saturday I think, alot more booty than usual, and a good bit harder too by the end.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 27 October 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Tresor seem to carry the flag for the concept of album releases from techno artists.

Although Kanzleramt raised the bar this year with Alexander Kowalski "Response" and Heiko Laux "Offshore Jazz". Especially the Kowalski album is a strong contender for best "dancefloor techno" album ever.
