Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

No Jay-Z?!!

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Lips at no. 1...

Barima (Barima), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

where is trife when we 'need' him?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha and Outkast at No. 2 - brilliant Trifebait.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

how MOTHERFUCKING informative

stevem (blueski), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Giving the Flaming Lips 16/20 for style is erring a little on the side of generosity, isn't it?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha truly hilarious - I detect the hand of the dread Petridis

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

whatta horrible list!

remind me again - why do people link incredibly daft guardian pop pieces?

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

also they fuck up charles barkley's quote and misattribute it to chris rock

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It seems very...er... west coast or something. I sometimes feel that San Francisco (and I lived there for a little while) is trying to portray itself a certain way (the Guardian does this). Like what the city lets on to the world is not the way it really is. Then again, this statement could make no sense.

scott m (mcd), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Blech. What is the "Kylie's bottom" incident they speak of in relation to J. Timberlake?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

remind me again - why do people link incredibly daft guardian pop pieces?

Just in case there are people outside of the UK who haven't realised by now that the UK press is the worst in the Western world.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

From The Guardian's "Speak to Petridish" thing:

Both lists looked like they'd been compiled by middle-aged white blokes who grew up listening to guitar music and had only expanded their compass where the huge commercial success of a particular act had made it unavoidable (Justin T, Beyonce etc) or where the presentation was sufficiently similar to allow the blokes in question to pretend that they were listening to rock and roll (Dizzee Rascal, DJ Shadow).

OTM, Mr Guardian reader.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"Kylie's bottom" incident : He found between a pile of Madonna bootlegs and subsequently attached it to Britney Spears. She subsequently replaced him with Limpy Singah

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

That comment makes no sense either. In what way is the presentation of Dizzee in any way similar to rock?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

With the exception of the Lips at No. 1, this is the most ILX list ever. I mean, DFA!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

remind me again - why do people link incredibly daft guardian pop pieces?

I will never do
anything like this again,
oh thou holy blount.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I swear I'm going to give myself an ulcer if people keep on liking the Flaming Lips for much longer.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

That list is really bizarre. Maybe I'm just hung up on the word "band" -- over half of the top 20 are solo artists and/or producers!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

lists = sux0r

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 24 October 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

''I swear I'm going to give myself an ulcer if people keep on liking the Flaming Lips for much longer.''

tom if that list was improvised it would have been a million times better.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean that list was rehearsed Julio?

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the stretch that goes Will Oldham=>Pink=>Tom Waits=>The DFA=>Madonna It's very American and I also like it. People should stop being surprised that they don't like other people's list.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Giving the Flaming Lips 16/20 for style is erring a little on the side of generosity, isn't it?

Not if your style idol is the 80-year-old fellow who simultaneously plays the calliope, kazoo and bass drum at state fairs.

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

In what way is the presentation of Dizzee in any way similar to rock?

He released an album. Albums >>>> singles to the Guardian.

Nick H, Friday, 24 October 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Flaming Lips.
There, I've said it out loud. Whew.
That was difficult.

They're not my fave band;
and their fans are annoying,
they get too much press...

but that's all just dross,
I don't care about that stuff.
I just like their songs.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVED The Soft Bulletin! (Yoshimi: bye bye Bonham = bye bye Blount)

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt, the DFA are 'hip'! Of course they made the list. I'm sure this sorta arse-licking BS bounces off 'em tho'.
Anyways, Shadow is vaguely un-ILXish, and no longer strikes me as one of America's more exciting prospects.

Barima (Barima), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

my fave lips album
is clouds taste metallic james,
but yeah I feel ya

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan909: haha the guardian's 40 best us bands says the flaming lips encompass so many sounds yadda yadda and then outrageously "DETROIT TECHNO"

Ronan909: hahaha

Dubplatestyle: !!!

Ronan909: i fucking hate that rock hack tendency to say this is a big melange of styles

Ronan909: as if you can learn anything about anything other than rock
Ronan909: from the flaming lips

Dubplatestyle: well ronan obviously other music has no value until it is filtered into great, epic rock

Ronan909: coldplay take in a whole range of influences, from dylan to dillinja

Dubplatestyle: dylanja

Ronan909: haha

Dubplatestyle: absolutely sweet muthafacka

Ronan909: the first man to make electronic drum and bass

Ronan909: before that it was very tiring

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

FLAMING LIPS #129-THE WRATH OF MANGA

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

No Jay-Z?!!

no Sleater-Kinney either

i think the best US response to this would be Neil Strauss' 40 best UK acts

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 24 October 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

lambchop at #10 is very odd.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

WHO THE FUCK IS LAMBCHOP!?! I've never ever heard of them wtf?

Tom Waits' presence on the list made me smile, although the "disappeared through much of the 90s" thing is rubbish (*ahem* Bone Machine, The Black Rider, Mule Variations *ahem*).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and I, on behalf of America, disown Madonna. You can have her, London!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

(Then I predictably slide Ween into her slot on this top 40 American bands thingy.)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

According to the list, there are only 12 American bands with a passing grade.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

LIPS 4EVER!! But where's Ween???

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

That piece, regarding Outkast:

"The one moment where the two work together is Ghetto Musick..."

But this is WRONG! They worked together on (just going from memory) "Church", "Last Call", and "Roses" also, at the very least!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 October 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

lambchop at #10 is very odd.

gygax!, Lambchop are serious critical darlings to every single music critic working for the "highbrow" newspapers of Britain.

adaml (adaml), Friday, 24 October 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I like The Flaming Lips, too. Soft Bulletin, Hear It Is, and Hit To Death (especially) are all GRATE.

adaml (adaml), Friday, 24 October 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

that is very strange to hear! Bush:UK::Lambchop:USA

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 24 October 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Even though I don't like some of the artists on it and am dubious about the ordering, I think this list is great.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 24 October 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

is it the font?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 24 October 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I am a font whore.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 24 October 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the fact that they insist it is a list of bands is really annoying...
still,i do like quite a lot of the people on the list, although obviously there is loads of shit as well
i can't believe they compared the flaming lips to detroit techno

robin (robin), Friday, 24 October 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

QOTSA shoud be higher. :)

adaml (adaml), Friday, 24 October 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

''I like The Flaming Lips, too. Soft Bulletin, Hear It Is, and Hit To Death (especially) are all GRATE.''

'soft bulletin' is very good. the only records of theirs I feel like listening to.

Pretty odd as well: plenty of plenty who like their early psych stuff detest it but 'soft bulletin' would be the kind of rec that an ILM poster might like (if i factor in some of my generilisations (sp?) abt ILM posters).

''You mean that list was rehearsed Julio?''

yup.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 24 October 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Flaming Lips would only deserve the #1 spot if they had released Zaireeka like yesterday.

That said, weird list. But weird is good, I guess.

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 24 October 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

WHO THE FUCK IS LAMBCHOP!?! I've never ever heard of them wtf?

Astonishingly twee alt-country.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 24 October 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, my turn. who the fuck are the fiery furnaces?

scott seward, Friday, 24 October 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"Next big thing" band named after a 19th century greyhound.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 24 October 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i had always assumed kings of leon were english. at least yo la tengo isn't on the list.

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 25 October 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

It is seriously weird to see a publication that covers Pink alongside Will Oldham. I guess it's a good thing.

Kevin Erickson, Saturday, 25 October 2003 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"Coyne's cracked, off-key vocals"

?

"are the final
piece in the jigsaw...he may not always hit the right notes,"

this is a misrepresentation
