Was watching some of Carl Sagan's 'Cosmos' on DVD the other night. The ten minute sequence of Carl wordlessly piloting the outer reaches of the milky way in his 'dandelion starcraft' to the strains of "Heaven and Hell" was almost too much to comprehend.

I have a huge soft spot for that record...

(Jon L), Friday, 24 October 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

You know - I've never seen "Cosmos".

"Heaven and Hell" was the first Vangelis I owned. Given to me as a Xmas gift (!) on cassette by an older cousin. I was 10. I thought it was the strangest, most beautiful thing. And as I was already a Yes freak the Jon Anderson track at the end knocked me for a loop.

the 'midnight' choral theme on side 2 is the introductory theme to Negativland's 'Over The Edge' radio show... the first time I tuned in (1985), a caller asked what it was and Don actually went on mic to answer, I went out to buy it that weekend...

that one and Beauberg, and side 2 of l'Apocalypse des Animaux... no foolin'. other records you certainly have to tread a bit more carefully, there are very real problems with that stuff. But great moments hiding, too, if you've the time.

I want to hear his first two, 'Sex Power' and 'Fais que ton rĂªve soit plus long que la nuit'. Anyone on this list heard 'Sex Power"?

(Jon L), Friday, 24 October 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, I've never seen this, song titles for 'Heaven and Hell' -- the scary attack drone at the beginning of side 2 is called Intestinal Bat!

that tubular bells piece, 'Needles and Bones'... I'd dance to it if I had a cape long enough...

(Jon L), Friday, 24 October 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, not even then. everyone else in the room would also need capes that were long enough.

(Jon L), Friday, 24 October 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, that clip is awesome - thanks!

Cool clip, though his percussion noises are all sampled?! I thought they were him actually banging away on percussion instruments. :(

Anyway, yes, Heaven and Hell is a cool album. Mask kicks ass as well, IMO.

My fave Vangelis stuff is invariably the themes from "The Bounty." It's Vangelicious!

that clip is fukcing frustrating, because there's a bit missing, where he starts playing fanfares on the cs80 with his right hand, whilst accompanying himself on kettle drums from the emulator with his left. The whole thing suddenly kicks up a gear, it's like this little bit of magic suddenly appearing before your very eyes! Why did they miss it out?

not directly related, but vinyl copies of Vangelis' Blade Runner soundtrack have been making the rounds lately (not the orchestral version, but the real deal). not sure of their legitimacy though.

I'd love to see the entire doc this came from. I found the clip on the Arturia site - they've just released a nice virtual version of the CS80. Arturia got the clip from here.

Hee hee! Here's MORE! But it's a totally different clip.

one year passes...
Reeevive (selector).

I'm listening to Albedo right now for the first time in a LONG time and I think it is genius. Just a great album.

Glad to someone else giving up the love for the soundtrack to The Bounty!
