I picked this up last week. I never heard it before but i wanna get all the Floyd albums.
I have the obvious Dark side, animals, wish you.., Wall.
So next i got Meddle which is great!!

How does everyone rank this one (Atom) with the rest?

TS: Mike Oldfield's TUBULAR BELLS vs. Pink Floyd's ATOM HEART MOTHER

probably one of my fave PF albums, but gawd, i haven't listened to them since highschool

JasonD (JasonD), Saturday, 25 October 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I much prefer it over, say, Ummagumma and Saucerful of Secrets. Most folks seem to loathe the sprawling, side-filling title track, but I kinda digs it, I does...as silly as it is in parts. See also:

Turn it off before "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" and you're in for a damn fine Floyd listening experience.

2nd side is flawless -- first side, meh...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 25 October 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll say something like what I remember saying on that Atom Heart Mother vs Tubular Bells thread - if they could have made one good song from the meanderings on Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast (I'm thinking of Sunny Side Up), with a bit of judicious trimming this album could have been quite great.

Damian (Damian), Saturday, 25 October 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

... but I like "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast"!!!!!!! The big embarrassment on the album is "If" which is a forerunner for all of Roger Waters's subsequent career as a spoilt self-pitying dickhead

Dadaismus (Dada), Sunday, 26 October 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, "If" is quite crap, I'll give you that. I quite like "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" as well.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 26 October 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Better than "Ummagumma".
M'kay?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 27 October 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it is.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 27 October 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I always liked "If" simply b/c it was so damned sparse -- yes, self-pitying, but not obnoxiously so. I've just never even been able to concentrate on, much less enjoy, the title track.

A little note about "Fat Old Sun," I read somewhere that it was Gilmour's first real guitar solo and completely written out beforehand. Makes sense really...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 27 October 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Great album, imo, but the way he sings the line "If I were a good man" in if really irritates me. I haven't heard it for ages, to be honest. Re Tubular Bells, the choral element which unites the two albums is also present in the Avalanches album; I knew it reminded me of something...

Jez (Jez), Monday, 27 October 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't listened to it forever but I remember quite liking it. Some of the orchestral stuff was good and the bit with mostly organ, bass, and drums was about as funky as they got.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 October 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

see i LOVE If. i really never had a problem with it at all, maybe b/c i never compared it to later floyd/solo work. actually it's kind of a highlight for me.

the title track is rather mindblowing. and summer '68 is just catchy beautiful gory goodness. this brings me back to highschool soooo much.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 04:34 (seventeen years ago)

i like it too, but it's somewhat hit and miss. most of the highlights are to be found in the suite, while the 3 tracks in the middle are pretty enough, but fairly basic and by the numbers. well, 'summer '68' is admittedly an uncharacteristic pink floyd song, and does some interesting stuff.

the psychedelic breakfast thing is simply an experiment gone awry. though an interesting concept, to be sure

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 04:38 (seventeen years ago)

i think i'm a fan of it. i have v. fond memories, at least. i mean it's definitely basic, but i appreciated the throwaway of it. it was literally filler, which was fine with me.

Surmounter, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 04:40 (seventeen years ago)

Strange coincedence, I was thinking of "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" the other day.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 04:44 (seventeen years ago)

see, i think of it often enough to feel like it was a worthwhile recording of something. esp. cuz i'm a big fan of marmalade, and i can sort of relate to the stream of consciousness about wanting to have some =)

Surmounter, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 04:49 (seventeen years ago)

hahahah

'marmalade, i like marmalade'

Damn it, I wish I able to go to this:

Those who have bought tickets for the Sunday evening Atom Heart Mother concert, being held at London's Cadogan Hall on June 15th, will have an added bonus to what already promises to be a very special event.

We've now had it confirmed by his manager that David Gilmour will be making a guest appearance at the show helmed by his old friend Ron Geesin. He'll be performing on the epic 1970 track, alongside the Italian band Mun Floyd, cellist Caroline Dale (who has worked with David before), the brass ensemble, and the 40-strong chorus Canticum, all of whom will be playing the piece in front of a rapt audience!

The pair of Atom Heart Mother concerts (on Saturday June 14th at 7:30pm, and Sunday June 15th at 7pm) kick off the 2008 Chelsea Festival in style. Ron Geesin, the co-composer of AHM, will recreate Pink Floyd's iconic 1970 album - their first number one album and first Gold record. The performances will also feature archive material from the original recording and other music by Ron, including new scores created specially for the occasion.

Surmounter, Saturday, 31 May 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)

Certainly the weirdest thing I listened to incessantly when I was 15 (1977 that is). Music with sound effects was the wickedest thing ever back then.

Hideous Lump, Sunday, 1 June 2008 02:04 (seventeen years ago)

this was the last floyd album I ever bought, I even got More and Obscured by Clouds before this; in fact, I only got this in the past five years or so. I find it just a really weird album as a result.

The end section of "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" is one of the most uplifting pieces of music in their whole catalogue. Bravo, Rick Wright!

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Friday, 10 June 2016 17:36 (nine years ago)

weird album.

brimstead, Friday, 10 June 2016 20:23 (nine years ago)

Last time I played this album (about three years ago), I hated side one so much. It has permanently left a mark on my brain.

I should give it another chance, I suppose.

Austin, Saturday, 11 June 2016 00:12 (nine years ago)

There's parts of this album I like, but I've never been into the whole thing.

Obscured By Clouds, though - now we're talkin'!

Turrican otm. Obscured by Clouds rules.

Austin, Saturday, 11 June 2016 00:17 (nine years ago)

Apart from the boring Roger Waters' song... the third album in a row where you could make this statement.

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Saturday, 11 June 2016 00:27 (nine years ago)

I think more and more that Obscured may be the album of theirs that ages the best (I love pretty much everything they've done, so not getting into what's best). That opening krautrock track is pretty timeless.

dlp9001, Saturday, 11 June 2016 00:29 (nine years ago)

The Complete Zabriskie Point bootleg thing is the one I listen to the most these days.

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 11 June 2016 00:44 (nine years ago)

Giving this another chance, I still find side one a bit tedious. Some sections are so great, they stick out so much, it's almost an insult to the surrounding parts (mostly thinking of Gilmour's first solo here). I don't have a problem with orchestral accompaniment, it's just that the brass arrangements sound so out of place and incongruent with the rest of the band. I don't know, maybe I prefer strings. I have similar issues, on a much smaller scale, with 'Summer '68' as well.

'If' and 'Fat Old Sun' are slow and dreamy — really the best this album has to offer.

It's a mixed bag. I prefer Meddle.

Austin, Sunday, 12 June 2016 23:01 (nine years ago)

i love side one of atom heart mother, but a lot of this is because i am a big ron geesin fan. i think his brass/choir arrangements are endearingly daffy. so many bands of this era when they went orchestral wanted to make a Big Sweeping Serious Statement (stuff like Ars Longa Vita Brevis- yuck!), and floyd went in the opposite direction with geesin. mind you it's also a perfectly good song, if a bit thin on the ground, live without the orchestra- lovely haunting wordless vocals from gilmour/wright. (the montreux soundboard is a good boot to seek out.)

side two is, well, just not as much fun for me! the third part of "alan's psychedelic breakfast" is lovely and all, but the thing as a whole comes off as more throwaway fluff like on the studio side of ummagumma. "fat old sun" is great but, like many songs of the era, was way better live when it turned into this great 15 minute jam.

i wish they'd done more of obscured by clouds live. in '73 they did obscured by clouds/when you're in as another killer 15 minute jam, and they did some really nice versions of "childhood's end" in late '72 and early '73, oh, and i think gilmour did a splendid "wots uh the deal" on his '06 solo tour, but that's really about it for the album. fucking shame.

hypnic jerk (rushomancy), Sunday, 12 June 2016 23:41 (nine years ago)

I haven't heard it in a while but I remember thinking the BBC In Concert version of the title track was much better than the studio version - but then all of the tracks from that session are better than the original versions.

xzanfar, Tuesday, 2 February 2021 21:39 (five years ago)

I bought this on LP in the late 80s and always thought the whole thing sounded muddy. When I finally heard the 2011 CD edition, it is a completely different (and much clearer) mix!

But I can't find any corroboration online that there are two different mixes of this album. You can hear the difference in the bit in the suite (about 19:00) where Mason says, "Silence in the studio!"

LP: voice pans right to left
CD: voice stays slightly left

Anyone know what I am talking about?

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 00:17 (five years ago)

it’s fun, the opening track is a bit ridiculous

There's a new box set, for those who like such things. Terribly timed though

Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother will be released December 8th as a special package in a 7-inch gatefold sleeve: the album on CD and a Blu-ray featuring footage of AHM performed at Hakone Aphrodite Festival, Japan in August 1971 (originally part of The Early Years box set).
