"11:59" popped up on iPod shuffle the other week, and I listened to it about 16 times in a row.

one month passes...
Search: Atomic, Call Me, Denis, Sunday Girl, Picture This, X-Offender, I'm Gonna Love You Too, and just about every other single.

Destroy: Island of Lost Souls; and The Atomic Best Of CD I have, which features neither the Dun-Dun-Duns at the very start of Atomic (which are even on the bonus remixes), nor the scraper board at the start of Heart of Glass.

Graham, Sunday, 26 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic: Rip her to Shreds, Dreaming, and In the Flesh. Also have a soft spot for Union City Man (but does anyone find it odd that they used that in the 80' [j carpenter?] remake of 'The Hand'?? Wasn't it playing in the car when Michael Cain get's into the accident?) Also - No Exit. Uhmm, errr - still not sure about it. Debbie's voice sounds creaky and the arrangements forced.

Jason, Sunday, 26 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Destroy: That god-awful remix album from the mid-90s that managed to add beats and yet suck ALL the fun out of the songs. The Union City Blue and Atomic remixes are amongst the WORST things I've ever heard. Search: Everything said above.. and One Way Or Another and I'm On E and bugger it, Maria.

EdwardO, Sunday, 26 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Destroy: The aforementioned remix album (ugh, that was the absolute worst thing ever), No Exit with the exception of...

Search: "Maria". And basically everything else, especially "Dreaming".

Ally, Sunday, 26 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maria is a parody band doing Blondie.

Destroy: Everything after The Hunter

Search: Clem Burke doing his best Keith Moon impression at all times -- any of the live stuff you can find, X-Offender, and Debbie Harry!

JM, Sunday, 26 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Of course "Maria" is parodic, that's what makes it great. The reason why the rest of No Exit sucked is because the rest of it was too damn serious and trying too hard to fit in with current music.

And oh, of course you need to search Debbie Harry. And while you're doing that, search "I Can See Clearly", easily-by-miles her best solo work.

Ally, Sunday, 26 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think everyone else has already said what is key. Find the two disc collection that came out and go nuts, really. Because DREAMING IS FREE.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 26 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Parallel Lines is all you really need.

Maria is a great song (but then my wife's called Maria so I may be biased.)

Billy Dods, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Parallel Lines is genius, but both Plastic Letters and the first album are even better. Everything up to Call Me was genius, and even The Tide Is High is wonderful (took me a few years to admit that one). Maria is genius, rest of that album is crap. Debbie's French Kissing In The USA is genius.

Well, that's a whole bunch of genii then. Can't wait for the reissues of all the albums that feature rare and live tracks from the time - including Blondie's legendary 'Out In The Streets' cover. That will be five albums I'll be rushing to buy (for the, uh, seventh time, I think)... but I can do without the extended remix of Warchild on Hunter.

Jerry, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, everything up until The Hunter is great. Parrallel Lines was the first LP I ever bought, and I still love it to death.

Sean, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(yo all! still settling in.) Sunday Girl is tremendous. Mellow in the way that all songs about that day should be.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 27 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eleven months pass...
Is anything at all on The Hunter worth a damn? Or is it truly as horrible as its reputation suggests?

Secondly, may I turn this into a Search and Destroy: Deborah Harry?

Even though I really love some of Autoamerican, and definitely Eat To The Beat, I still say that if a person just has the bonus tracks that appear on the reissue of Blondie's first album, their very first "Instant Records" demo tracks, then that might just be all a non-Blondie fan needed to be convinced of their greatness, forever. A person could conceivably never need to have any other Blondie, ever.

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Monday, 18 July 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

Still, I maintain "Scenery" could have been an early Who song alongside "The Kids Are Alright".

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Monday, 18 July 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

Tracks to search: Rip Her To Shreds; Shark in Jet's Clothing; No Imagination; I'm Always Touched by your Presence Dear; Contact in Red Square; X Offender; Dreaming; Shayla; Union City Blue; Living in the Real World; Die Young, Stay Pretty; Accidents Never Happen; Sunday Girl; Go Away; Fade Away and Radiate; Angels on the Balcony; Island of Lost Souls, Pretty Baby; Go Through It; The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game; Maria; Out in the Streets demo; Call Me; Live It Up

Destroy: 90% of the Hunter; 95% of No Exit; 100% of Curse of Blondie; Attack of the Giant Ants; I'm on E; The Tide is High; Atomic

Hits of interest for historical reasons, that I have heard waaaay to much: Heart of Glass, One way or Another, Rapture - might be of interest to someone just discovering the band.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 18 July 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

I love No Exit, so whatever. From that album you have "Nothing is Real But The Girl," "Maria," "Under The Gun," and "The Dream's Lost On Me," every bit as great as the classics on Parallel Lines and Eat To The Beat.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 18 July 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

Most of "No Exit" I love too. But I hear you can be crucified around these parts for saying so. Have you entrails eaten out by vultures, etc. I'll be on me way, then.

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Monday, 18 July 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

S/D special remix edition:

Search: Utah Saints' remix of "Dreaming" and the Vinny Vero mix of "The Tide Is High" from the 1995 remix album, Xenomania's remix of "Atomic" from the 1998 remix album, and Scissor Sisters' remix of "Good Boys." While these are good, the original extended mixes of "Rapture" and "Call Me" that are available on the re-issue of _Autoamerican_ are transcendent.

Destroy: Pretty much every other remix, but especially the Guru remix of "Rapture."

esque, Monday, 18 July 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

(xpost)

Those people have not heard with open ears.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea why you'd want to destroy 100% of Curse of Blondie. Well, I suppose you could, if you want to live without "Good Boys", "Shakedown", "Come Undone" and especially "The Tingler", it's your loss.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 18 July 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

**Destroy: 90% of the Hunter; 95% of No Exit; 100% of Curse of Blondie; Attack of the Giant Ants; I'm on E; The Tide is High; Atomic**

ATOMIC? Destroy Atomic? What kind of madness is this?

Who did the fabulous electro remix of "In The Flesh" on the "Sight and Sound" compilation?

esque, Friday, 11 November 2005 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

How many times can they repackage the same damn hits?! This time they tack on an electro remix and a mashup of Rapture and Riders on the Friggin' Storm...

That is a nice cover, though!

Whoa, the Blondie/Doors mashup? That's a pretty cool little gesture.

Also of note: "Dreaming" is still very much my favorite song in the world.

Is it just Deborah, Chris and Clem now? Bassist looked like an old dude too, but I don't think I'd recognize him just by seeing him.

Anyway, that's a good old-style Blondie track. Consider me impressed.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 19 May 2011 06:33 (fourteen years ago)

Was just coming to post this. Not sure what I think. At times it seems like a retread of "Maria," the previous comeback song, but it goes to some decent post-"Parallel Lines" places too.

This song is okay-to-good. It's nagl on "Blondie" though, imo. Deborah Harry & Beth Ditto collaboration joint maybe, or even a Gossip single featuring Harry, but I kind of can't get past a song sounding like this being a Blondie single.

Of course, the new album's title is Ghosts of Download though, so wtf anyway.

Yeah this is a no-brainer.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 8 June 2022 15:24 (three years ago)

I can't stop thinking about "Picture This" and the frenzy it works up into during the chorus when everything seems to fly apart. The verses are so simple and beautiful and direct and universal, and then the chorus starts to twist in on itself, with allusions to incredibly specific moments, the details accumulating like the detritus spun up by a tornado, and the grammar doesn't even really make sense anymore, until eventually, angrily, we climax with "if it weren't for your job at the GARAGE!!!" which doesn't rhyme with anything, and then we come back to earth. It's just extraordinary

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 30 November 2023 08:50 (one year ago)

Picture This is one of my favorite Blondie songs. Particularly when she analogizes her telephone number to a sky full of thunder. All the potential for passion and beauty if he would just pick up the phone and call her.

The garage line is hilarious. Yes, it's earth-shaking romantic thunder and lightning, but it plays across the small-stakes world of a woman and her mechanic.

I haven't listened to it yet, but this week's episode of Bandsplain is about Blondie.

I listened to No Exit for the first time in years last week. Clem Burke is a beast. Most of it held up: "Maria," "Under the Gun," "Screaming Skin," "Nothing is Real But the Girl." The genre experiments were the clumsiest.

"Long Time," the sole representative from Pollinator, is also a standout and was one of the highlights.

Debravation is the weakest of her solo albums, but their playing "Dog Star Girl" as the first encore was a pleasant surprise. It came off well.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 11 May 2024 18:21 (one year ago)

for some reason my college radio station was much taken with "I Can See Clearly"

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 11 May 2024 18:24 (one year ago)

I don't hate it, but it's not a track I find myself much taken with. I respect her willingness to break the "Blondie" mold, especially on Kookoo, which was a noble if only partially successful experiment, but she's never hit the highs alone as she has with whatever configuration of Blondie she's played with.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 11 May 2024 18:33 (one year ago)

I also respect the hell out of her for continuing to perform very well at nearly 79 years old. She was doing anything but phoning it in.

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Sunday, 12 May 2024 18:21 (one year ago)

One funny realization about that for me was thinking about how Blondie in their early days were doing Shangri-Las covers in their live shows, as if paying tribute to a bygone era of rock ‘n roll, when in fact Debbie was older than any of the Shangri-Las.

Josefa, Sunday, 12 May 2024 18:22 (one year ago)

Saw Blondie last night as part of the Cruel World Festival in Pasadena. The band sounded great and she is iconic, amazing presence. Glen Matlock was playing as the touring bassist. Felt very privileged to have seen them play.
