okay so I've heard interesting things about Bad Blood!!!, "Dust Me Selecta" is got the bubbly pour it on me, I like the three exclamation marks, I like that they remixed the Dead C (haven't heard it tho), & I think I'm almost ready to embrace the whole wacky-Aussie noisepopdancepunk whatever (I love "Arse Huggin' Pants" by Spiderbait to bits & might actually, y'know, listen to some of their other stuff; + I've just met a huge Regurgitator fan!), & . . . hmmmn.

apparently they used to be indiepop. um esoj? minna? tim? andrew?

(Real Groovy has When Young Terrorists Chase The Sun & Bad Blood!!! on special; & they might have a few singles in the cheap bin)

Bits of their first album were indiepoppy, e.g. Death To The Apple Gerls.

I can't really remember, though, cos I don't have a copy anymore. But Enter Space Capsule is delectable...

they started out sounding super-noisy US indie and then like a half-assed pavement and then they went electronic with mixed (occasionally mediocore, occasionally excellent) results. young terrorists is probably their most satisfying work but the previous album is not bad either. i don't like their new stuff.

"Newwave Machine" sounds sorta like the Faint with all the goth scraped off.

live they are either - a) appalling or b) wonderful. Never in between.

"Dust Me Selecta" is a surprisingly lovely vocal house track - think Shakedown's "At Night" or Basement Jaxx's "Red Alert", but actualy I do think The Avalanches is the best comparison for it, if The Avalanches recorded a relatively straightforward house-pop track.

I loved "Enter Space Capsule" at the time, but I'm not sure if I still would now. Their new stuff seems to be charting some garage-punk/electro fusion that would seem to be quite unfortunate (they tend to be better the dreamier they are, not the other way round).

The footage I've seen of their live performances makes them look ultra-annoying.

I saw them at a festival and they were miming "Enter Space Capsule" quite obviously, dancing around the stage while it played prerecorded. That was the only bit of their set I enjoyed, too. That was pre-"Dust Me Selecta", which was very good.

I really liked 'The Deer In You', but some of the assorted 10" releases here in the UK were not impressive, besides the Avalanches remix, making good come out of that darn 'Clubbed To Death' beat and a great ODB sample. I was most amped to hear the Cornelius remix of 'Hot Computer' of course, even if my faith in his work ain't what it used to be. 'Dust Me Selecta' is great, tho. Is the Kool Keith track any good, and should we take sides on Cut Copy vs Gerling?

I'm not really feeling the new album too much - the best track is probably the Strokes ripoff (In The City) which I really like - the singles so far (Who's Ya Daddy, Get Activated) are fuckin' woeful. I liked Young Terrorists and parts of Children Of...

Only seen 'em play once or twice. Terrible.

The Cornelius remix wasn't all that great, he would've been far better off actually remixing the Hot Computer summery remix (if that makes sense), than doing the shitty album version.

Cut Copy's apparently gone a bit more straightforward pop/rock/electro on his (their?) new album. Looking forward to hearing it.

Mil, I suppose that sounds about right re: Cornelius. I think Momus' comment about Point being "the music of a parent" or something along those lines is right. He's definitely a better producer than he was in '97, which probably didn't seem possible at the time, and he seemed fairly unstoppable in the gap between albums (I mean, 'Lazy' is fucking fantastic) but he's lost a fair bit of his edge to the kids (ie Plus-Tech Squeeze Box).

I'm very amped to hear Cut Copy's album (it's finished, right?)- I've loved everything Modular licensed over to Rex for the UK and even had an mp3 of 'Drop The Bomb' )(his sales here were kinda atrocious, even for a small subsidiary label like Rex - why did I keep seeing the 10"s in the cheap bins?). His remix of the Noonday Underground is one of this year's best remixes - he/they are one of those acts where they put themselves into their influences and become more than the sum of the parts, which actually seems routine for a lot of my fave dance and sampling acts. More please, Dan.

new cut copy's on the radio here now, i think the album will be next year. i saw them (him) at livid the other week, and was mega impressed. one of their first gigs as a band, and it was sublime. as is the single, "future."

yeah gerling did used to be indiepop... i liked them then when i was indiepop too. i was obsessed with the josh abrahams remix of 'enter space capsule' (surprisingly i didnt think much of the avalanches remix at all and found it curious when gerling said 'avalanches are the best band in the world ever' only to get sucked in completely later on), which is pretty (and) twee. i also liked the version of ghost patrol with a japanese girl singing on it, and the children of etc. album. i never really connected with anything before or after that era of gerling. theoretically i should love dust me selecta but it just leaves me thnking meh. one of the huge problems w gerling is the singer(darren?) - his voice is mediocre so then his snideness becomes a bit intolerable. the other problem is that when they decide to do a style they copy that other sound so carefully and completely that they end up sounding like a shoddy version of 'the real thing' instead of having their own sound. it might have something to do with lyrics too. but maybe this is just me thinking of carob as a bad chocolate substitute instead of having its own unique flavour. i kinda enjoy 'blood on the microphone' (the rapture copyist song), especially the cut up chorus, but simultaneously feel that same gerling repulsion as i always do now.

actually - it might be a lot better if i left that carob thing out - the carob thing doesnt make sense!!

and his voice....there's snideness yes, and there's something else too. copped attitude?
and sometimes he sounds like he's trying to be sincere but you have no idea why cos the lyrics arent saying anything at all really

This band are hit & miss, for sure. I saw them at the Melbourne Big Day Out in 2001 and thought they were heaps of fun. Then I saw them again at Livid last year and thought they were terrible. Even the acid didn't help.

I do like the last track on 'Who's Your Daddy' though. They're totally unreliable, but Gerling do have their moments.

"High Jacker's Manual" is absolutely amazing and the "Enter Space Capsule" remix is amazing too. And "The Deer In You". And "Hot Computer". Bad Blood!!! is very enjoyable as well but it went sorta indie-dancepunky. Children of Telepathic Experiences is really good too, and it's more dance-musicy than their later stuff (the trumpet in "Suburban Jungle Sleeping Bag" gets me every fukken time). I think When Young Terrorists... just might be their all-around best album.

I so wish they'd tour the US. Last time they did I was totally unavailable :-(
